5. TICKS 101
Mating: In most cases, mating has to occur on the host because the
male tick requires a little snack before he mates. This, however, is not
the case with deer ticks.
Eating: Ticks eat only the blood of warm blooded animals and humans.
Females are much slower than males, eating on one host for a number
of days. Once engorged, they lay their eggs then die. Hungr y ticks can
live for up to two year s, in some cases, without eating.
Habitats: Most types of ticks hide in grassy or wooded areas. Brown
dog ticks, however, are indoor creatures, hiding in furniture, behind
baseboards, and even under the edges of rugs.
