SMARCOS VISUALLY IMPAIRED ANDROID APLLICATION
The Visually Impaired Application is a SMARCOS project pilot within the area of Complex Systems
and aims at investigating the interaction with touchscreen devices by users with visual impairments. To
this end, we chose Android-powered devices and we developed a prototype application to implement
some targeted functionalities, which allowed us to analyse and evaluate how well the blind user is able
to interact and work with a smartphone
• Android application for smartphone with touch screen technology
• In order to allow blind users to interact with the touch screens
• Focus on: the lack of hardware keys and tactile references can be very
complex for blind people interacting with touch screens
• Working together with 20 users, we identified:
• the appropriate gestures to adopt for the screen in order to navigate
and access information: scrolling, flicking, tapping, double
tapping
• the resulting feedback: vibration, vocal messages, short
sounds
