Private organizations play an important role in fire prevention and protection efforts. There are three categories of private fire prevention programs: those that are part of business risk management, profit-making business services, and not-for-profit organizations serving the public interest. Key players in fire prevention include the insurance industry, which helped establish early regulatory systems, as well as private contractors, consultants, and trade and standards organizations that develop codes and best practices to reduce fire risks.
