Comfort and Control
How do you feel when you are in control?
•You might feel: safe, satisfied and positive
•Being in this stage: You want to keep the
status quo going.
Fear and Resistance
How do you feel when you are afraid and
resisting ?
•You might feel: anxious or insecure.

in the change skeptically and half-heartedly.
Experimenting and Discovering
How do you feel when you are experimenting
with something new?
•You might feel: challenged, hopeful and
committed to seeing it through

is happening and you commit to a new way of
working, living, etc.?
•You might feel: energized, successful, a rock
star
•Being in this stage: You feel accomplished
and motivated to try something else new.
Which stage are you in
Fill in the blank
I am in the (which) stage of change.
I know this because I am feeling/thinking/behaving

Brainstorm-Getting Unstuck
What can you do?
What might you think?
What support do you want?
Getting unstuck:
Comfort and control
•Remember past successes.
•Remind yourself of the consequences if the
change doesn’t occur.
•Educate yourself about why the change will help
you.
Getting unstuck:
Fear and Resistance
•Know when you are afraid.
•Don’t try to talk yourself out of your feelings.
•Think about alternative endings.
oPlay devil’s advocate
Getting unstuck:
Experimentation
• Be able to tolerate the “challenge zone.”
•Take time to reflect on what is happening and
pick out what is working.
•Set short-term goals that lead to long term
progress.
Getting Unstuck:
Acceptance
•Celebrate successes.
•Acknowledge what you left behind.
•Reward your new behaviors.
Activity: Being Stuck and Getting
Unstuck
Instructions
1. On you own, identify which phase you are stuck in.
2. Think about ways that you could get unstuck.
• How might you change your thinking?
• How would you act differently?
3. Find a partner and share both ways that you might be “stuck” and
how you plan to get “unstuck”.
4. Take turns sharing your answers .
5. Answer the follow up question: What support do you need?
Resilience is the
ability to recover
after being
subjected to
adversity or
stress.
5 ways to build your resilience
muscle
•Have a clear personal vision- “Why am I doing this?”
•Be flexible- “Shift happens, how will I go with it?”
•Be solution oriented- “ Where do I go next?”
•Interpersonal Intelligence- “Who is my support?”
•Be proactive- “What am I learning here?”
6 word resiliency mantra
In six words, what can you say to yourself to
unlock your resistance/stuckness and manage
change differently?
•Use strong words
•Be action oriented
•Make it memorable
Activity: Resilience
Instructions
1. Find 2 partners at your table.
2. Take turns sharing your 6 word resilience mantra.
3. Answer the following questions:
◦ Why did you choose those words ?
◦ How will you use the mantra?
◦ What effect it has on you?
In Summary
What we now know is:
•Our attitudes about change impact our
reactions to change
• Finding out where we are in the cycle of change
helps us know what comes next and what we
can do when we feel stuck
•While change is in inevitable, being mindful with
our response is a choice.
