What is BGP?
•BGPv4 is the core routing protocol of the
Internet. It connects enterprise networks to
ISPs and ISPs to other ISPs.
•BGP is an advanced routing protocol that
makes routing decisions based on path,
network policies and rule sets.
•BGP neighbors (or peers) are established by
manual configuration between routers.
Why BGP over RIP? - Stateful Routing
•RIP constantly sends it’s entire routing table as
it is stateless. We have always recommend not
to use it over the RF segment for this reason.
•BGP is a stateful protocol, so it does not
transfer any user data after convergence.
•BGP speakers run a minimal keepalive protocol
on top of TCP.
•iDirect extensions allow for no keepalive
packets on the RF side. Zero steady state
overhead!
Why BGP over RIP? - Policy
•RIP’s only factor in routing decisions is hop
count.
•BGP will consider different attributes, in
selecting the best path for a route.
•BGP can be configured to allow/deny routes
based on these attributes.
•Network administrators can modify attributes.
•Finally, a BGP speaker can configure all of the
above for import or export to each individual
peer.

Efficient MF D-TDMA Return Channel
• BPSK, QPSK, 8PSK, and spread spectrum modulation alternatives
• 100% fill factor from operating in reservation mode 100% of the time
• Capacity assigned in increments as small as 0.28 kbps
• Change capacity assignments up to 10 times per second to match
changing traffic demands at remote sites.
• Uplink power control at all remote sites to enable efficient
implementation of Carrier-in-Carrier
Operational Considerations on Linear Transponder
• Link requirements
• Full-duplex circuits only (symmetric or asymmetric)
• Must be able to receive your own uplink signal
(doesn’t work with cross-strap transponders)
• Implementation considerations
• Power may be increased over standard frequency pair approach
• Depending on near/far ratio, 0.15 to 0.5 dB increase in downstream power
may be needed or a 0.1 to 1.0 dB degradation to downstream Eb/No occurs
• Min increase in downstream power with uplink power control at all remotes
• UPC at remotes minimizes power increase to maximize bandwidth efficiency
• May need to change existing coding rates and modulation to take
advantage of bandwidth reduction
• Link budget analysis will determine link configuration and estimated overall
savings of power and bandwidth with PCMA
• Special considerations to prevent jamming from inter-symbol interference.
• New services can be designed to maximize savings
• Biggest possible antennas at hub and remotes
• 3:1 to 2:1 forward:return traffic asymmetry
Inclined Orbit Satellites
• Enables Access to Inclined Orbit Capacity
• Old satellite put into inclined orbit to save fuel and extend life
• Inclined orbit satellite wobbles an additional 0.8°per year
• Life can be extended 4-8 years by placing satellite into inclined orbit
• 8 additional years of service at half price pays for replacing a satellite
• More satellites in the future are expected to be put into inclined orbit
• Satellites age faster than equity funds can raise cash to replace satellites
• Live satellite needed to preserve claim to orbital slot
• 25% - 80% discount common for inclined orbit bandwidth
• Exact discount level depends on satellite operator’s bandwidth inventory
• More C-band than Ku-band in inclined orbit today due to spacecraft age
• Enables DTH TV techs to Install 2-way VSAT
• No net increase in one-time costs of VSAT service
• Equipment replaces professional installation service
• Equipment often costs less than professional installation service
• Deploy large networks faster
• Plentiful low-skill Rx-only installers replace rare expensive techs
• Resident IT manager can even install 2-way VSAT by himself
Features of new antenna
•New antenna’s Pointing Features
•Points itself at the correct satellite within 0.1°
•Nulls linear cross pol by itself
•Re-points to different satellites as needed
• Backup
• End of Life
•Tracks inclined orbit satellite as needed
•How much?
•Priced Near Cost of 2-way VSAT

Making Cellular Backhaul Financially Viable
• Attainable market depends on the ability of satellite solutions to
meet rural user price points
• As the world cellular market expands geographically, the new client
base is expected to provide much lower ARPU – sub $8 USD. How
do carriers optimize transport to address these price points?
• Making low revenue regions profitable:
• New technology to reduce capital and operational expenditures
• Addition of new services, either based on the same cellular
technology (EDGE or 3G) or Internet access via WiFi or WiMax using
common transmission and site infrastructure
• The introduction of special licenses in developing countries to help
create regional operators and promote entrepreneurship
• Finance plans through World Bank or Asian Development fund
• iDirect technology enables financial viability in markets that
were not previously profitable

  • 10. What is BGP? •BGPv4 is the core routing protocol of the Internet. It connects enterprise networks to ISPs and ISPs to other ISPs. •BGP is an advanced routing protocol that makes routing decisions based on path, network policies and rule sets. •BGP neighbors (or peers) are established by manual configuration between routers.
  • 11. Why BGP over RIP? - Stateful Routing •RIP constantly sends it’s entire routing table as it is stateless. We have always recommend not to use it over the RF segment for this reason. •BGP is a stateful protocol, so it does not transfer any user data after convergence. •BGP speakers run a minimal keepalive protocol on top of TCP. •iDirect extensions allow for no keepalive packets on the RF side. Zero steady state overhead!
  • 12. Why BGP over RIP? - Policy •RIP’s only factor in routing decisions is hop count. •BGP will consider different attributes, in selecting the best path for a route. •BGP can be configured to allow/deny routes based on these attributes. •Network administrators can modify attributes. •Finally, a BGP speaker can configure all of the above for import or export to each individual peer.
  • 13.
