SAFETY
2016 Safe Kids Safe Ride Program Continues
Protecting Children
The 2016 Safe Kids Safe Ride program held its first
community activity at Shanghai’s Datong Garden
residential area on July 29. More than 30 children
and their parents participated. With the support of
GM volunteers, they learned about child passenger
safety through fun interactive activities designed for
people of all ages. It was one of several activities,
which also included visits to kindergartens in
Shanghai and Beijing, in the third quarter of 2016.
More than 200 children and their parents benefited.
“It was a thrill to see such a positive response from
the community,” said Monica Cui, executive director
of Safe Kids Worldwide-China.
Joan Lu, GM China Group controller and a
volunteer at the Punan Kindergarten activity,
added: “There was lots of effort and a well-done
event with exceedingly enthusiastic participation by
all members. I totally enjoyed it and look forward to
the next one!”
Headrests Are as Important as Safety Belts
Did you know that the headrests in your car are just
as important as the safety belts? OnStar reminds
vehicle users that headrests not only provide
comfort, but can also protect cervical vertebrae in
the event of a collision – especially a rear-end
collision.
If the headrest is higher than the person’s head, it
cannot provide an adequate cushion for protection.
Meanwhile, if the headrest is lower than the
person’s head, it could lead to broken cervical
vertebrae. OnStar recommends keeping the
headrest aligned with the person’s head and
ensuring that the distance between the headrest
and the person’s head does not exceed 4 cm.

SUSTAINABILITY
GM China Green Supply Chain Project Delivers
Strong Results
GM China’s Green Supply Chain project was
created to improve the energy consumption and
environmental protection of China-based parts and
components suppliers. Eight suppliers participated
in the initial yearlong program, decreasing their
consumption of electricity and natural gas. Their
combined reduction of carbon dioxide surpassed
5.5 million kg, which is equivalent to the benefit of
planting more than 300,000 trees. This helped
generate annual savings of more than RMB 9.3
million for the suppliers.
“The Green Supply Chain project helped our
suppliers improve their efficiency and overall work
environment,” said GM Executive Vice President
and GM China President Matt Tsien. “We will
continue cooperating with our suppliers to seek
additional improvements across their operations.
This is part of GM’s focus on consistently driving
for clean and energy-efficient production
throughout our value chain.”
Drive to Green Crowdfunding Platform Helps
Protect Endangered Monkey
The Baima Mountain Nature Reserve in Yunnan is
home to the snub-nosed monkey, which is one of
China’s first-grade protected species. There are
fewer than 3,000 of the monkeys left in the wild.
Due to farming, grazing and global warming, their
habitat is dwindling. If nothing is done, the forest is
expected to shrink by up to 38.6 percent in the 21st
century, which will seriously threaten the survival of
the snub-nosed monkey.
In order to prevent this tragedy from happening,
SAIC-GM’s Drive to Green crowdfunding platform
joined Guokr Interactive Technology Media to raise
funds to protect the home of the snub-nosed
monkey. Individuals can support the project by
visiting the WeChat account here, scanning the QR
code and recording “like.”
GM Accelerates Launch of Electrified Vehicles
in China
GM is accelerating the launch of electrified
vehicles in China. Through SAIC-GM, it plans to
fully localize its battery packs for new energy
vehicles via investment in a battery assembly plant

in Shanghai. The expansion of GM’s electric
vehicle portfolio in China will be led by the
Chevrolet Malibu XL Hybrid and Buick LaCrosse
Hybrid as well as the Cadillac CT6 plug-in hybrid
electric vehicle (PHEV) that will be introduced in
the market later this year.
SAIC-GM-Wuling Donates RMB 2 Million to
Indonesian Red Cross Society
SAIC-GM-Wuling has taken its spirit of giving to
Indonesia, where its first facility outside China is
under construction. On September 1, SAIC-GM-
Wuling’s labor union president Liming Li and
Changjiang Guo the vice president of the Red
Cross Society of China met with the executive
director of the Indonesian Red Cross Society in
Jakarta to discuss cooperation in Indonesia. SAIC-
GM-Wuling announced that it will donate RMB 2

Golden Pond at GM Campus in Shanghai Gets
New Sign
In the Name That Pond contest held this summer,
George Guo from GM China Aftersales provided
the Chinese name of 畅湖 (Chang Hu) and Francis
Peng from Engineering Operations submitted the
English name of Golden Pond for the pond gracing
the GM Campus in Shanghai. A sign has been
erected alongside the pond that provides interesting
facts about how the GM Campus is truly a green
facility.
Employee Coffee and Tea Lovers Unite for
“Green” Cause
Since GM China launched the Bring Your Own Mug
(B.Y.O.M.) initiative at the GM Campus in Shanghai
on April 22 as part of its Earth Day celebration,
employees have saved more than 700 paper cups.
To put it in perspective, this has helped GM China
reduce its carbon footprint by an estimated 14 kg.
As of today, employees have benefited by receiving
60 cups of coffee or tea paid by the company. GM
China’s goal is to save 1,000 paper cups by the end
of this year.
“It never occurred to me that being green would be
so easy,” said GM China Regional Compliance
Officer Yuan Wang. “I hope more coffee and tea
lovers at the GM Campus will join us in the
B.Y.O.M. initiative and enjoy a ‘green’ experience!”

EDUCATION
GM China Employees Support Village
Kindergarten Project
In early July, a group of 20 GM China employees
and two journalists traveled to the rural community
of Ledu in northwestern China’s Qinghai province to
teach children as part of GM China’s sponsorship of
the China Development Research Foundation
(CDRF) Village Kindergarten project.
The goal of the activity, launched this year by GM
China, was to contribute to the long-term
development of the language, physical and social
skills of disadvantaged children. It also served as
an extension of GM’s commitment to education in
China.
About 180 children between the ages of 3 and 6
received instruction in subjects they would not
normally be taught due to limited resources,
including art, music, sports and dance. The
personal touch was valuable, as the parents of
about 90 percent of the children had moved to large
cities to seek work.
One of the volunteers, Jeff Dai from GM China
Engineering, said: “We need to spread the word
about the importance of early education, especially
among those living in less prosperous areas. These
children’s lives have just begun – and they deserve
a better, brighter future. By supporting early
childhood education, we can fundamentally change
their future.” Click here to watch the video.

Chevrolet Red Chalk Program Marks 10th
Anniversary
The documentary "Ten Years, Endless Love”
premiered on August 27 as part of the celebration
of the 10th
anniversary of the establishment of the
Chevrolet Red Chalk Program, which sends
volunteer teachers to schools in rural communities
across China. The documentary shows the positive
changes that volunteers brought to six schools.
As it marked its 10th
anniversary, the Chevrolet Red
Chalk Program also hosted the Set Out the Dream
summer camp. Fifteen outstanding students from
rural villages were invited to come to Shanghai to
live their dreams. During the five-day activity, the
