2. Dyer Star Image:
• In Richard Dyer’s view; the star’s image depends on a range of subsidiary media
e.g magazines, TV, radio.
• Producers construct an image for the artist so it can be marketed to their target
audience.
• The star image is made up of a range of meanings which are attractive to the
target audience.
• The star must be simultaneously ordinary and extraordinary for the consumer e.g
be seen doing normal things like walking dogs but also extraordinary world tours
• The star must be simultaneously absent and present for the consumer.
• The image is inviting the audience to make sense of the image- this is achieved by
continued consumption of the star through the artists products.
• The star image can be used to position the consumer in relation to dominant social
values- hegemony – this may mean that the audience are positioned against the
mainstream (though only through a limited degree since they are still consumers
within a capitalist system) or within the mainstream or somewhere in between.
3. Negus Star Image:
• Negus’ ideas form the way in which the artist is marketed towards specific
audiences.
• Organic acts are sold on their authenticity, musically related and in general/social
terms.
• Synthetic acts are often sold on their look or personalities. Their image is carefully
constructed, usually by the producer or record company.
• Organic ideology- naturalistic approach to artists, the seeds of success are within
the artists who have been nurtured by the record company. The image of the artist
is enhanced by the image of the record company. The artist is also given time to
evolve and progress through their career.
• Synthetic ideology- Emphasis is given to single sales and to promoting first albums,
often aimed at younger/ less sophisticated audiences. Profits tend to be part of a
short term strategy. The image of the artist is often constructed by the record
company as the songs will be given to them, not written by them.
4. MY ARTIST’S IMAGE:
• As a group we have decided to present our single female artist as synthetic.
However, the image we are going for is not what you might brand as ‘extreme’
synthetic. Our artist does possess elements of an organic artist.
5. • We have decided to use a mixed race, young female singer to enhance the
idea of multiculturalism.
• We would like to put a large wig on her to give her a ‘statement’ look so
that fans can easily distinguish her and her unique look will be easily
recognizable. (Similar to Erykah Badu)
• Every character featured in the music video will be female as well. As a
group we looked at this idea of experimenting with sexuality we want all
the girls to look strong minded and powerful.
• Also, our song ‘Secret affair’ by The Internet was originally written about a
girl, sung by a girl. So we’d like to stick to this sexual experimentation
theme because it is very current with the legalization of gay marriage
being so recent.
6. • Our artist will appear ‘extraordinary’ in the sense that she will be
performing alternative choreography in the music video which will appeal
to both a male and female audience. Girls will aspire to be like her and
hopefully boys will want to be with her. For many celebrities today, their
‘perfect’ looks can be viewed as extraordinary because not many people in
society fit the ‘perfect’ image. Celebrities can afford to do this due to their
money and because it is all part of their public star image to their fans.
• Our artist will always be wearing extravagant clothing which will give off a
‘whacky’ yet cool vibe which fans will want to copy.
• Our artist may not appeal to all audiences however. This is because her
style is recycled, bold and unique. Therefore her style and music may only
attract a niche audience rather than a vast mainstream audience.
• Nonetheless as a group we would before fewer ‘extreme’ fans as appose
to many ‘half-hearted’ fans of our artist.
• Our artist will most likely appeal to women due to the feminism approach
towards the music video, however, because she will be perceived as ‘good
looking’ by society, she will also appeal to a wide male audience which will
increase in exposure and record sales.
