Headache or “cephalalgia” is one of the common health challenges. At one time or
another most people suffer from headache.
Headache is a symptom for number of different causes. The fact is brain tissue itself is
not sensitive for pain as it lacks in pain receptors. Rather the pain is caused by
disturbances of pain – sensitive structures around the brain such as cranium, muscles,
nerves, vassals, sense organs etc.,
Amongst the entire headache “Migraine” has become a common disorder a wing to
modern lifestyle.
“Migraine” is a syndrome of episodic recurrent headaches, more often unilateral,
pulsating pain with nausea lasting for 3 hrs-3days, Perspective of Ayurveda migraine
headaches are due to a disorder in tridosha – the mind body constitution.
Migraine – “Ardhava bedaka” frequently occur when systemic pitta moves into the
cardio – vascular system, circulates, and affects the blood vessels around the brain.
The blood vessels dilate due to hot and sharp quality of pitta. This in turn creates
pressure on the nerves resulting in migraine.
The symptom of this disease can be understood in the phases.
A) Prodromal stage: occurs in 40 – 60 % migraines commit of – Altered mood.
Depression / Euphoria
Fatigue, Irritability, Constipation/Diarrhea,
Some food items like chocolate.
This lasts for hours or days before actual attack.
B) Aura: Most common appears gradually over 5-20 min
Neurological events
Cloudy vision
Formation of zigzag lines on vision
Flashes of white and black
Multi colored lights.
Hallucination of sense of sound and smell (anditory, Allactory)
Vitiligo
Hypersensitivity to touch.

2. C) Pain: This is typical migraine headache unilateral, throbbing in nature. Pain may
be bilateral primarily. Pain may last for 3 hrs to 3days in adults and 48hours in
children. Many patients experience hyper excitability like photophobia, and seek
a dark room. , deliria, sweating also may be noted.
D) Postdrome: Last stage or hung-over stage after the main episode. Consists of
mood swings weakness, gastrointestinal symptoms, depression, for some this is
refreshing stage.
Causes for migraine ace:
Genetic predisposition, weather changes, emotional factor, frustration, depression,
anxiety, stress, tension, change in biological cycle, accidents, ear injection,
chocolates, birth control pills, onset of puberty, travelling, delivery, estrogen therapy,
menopause, smells and fumes, hunger, fasting, cold minds, hot – liquor women are
times more prone to migraine then men.
Ayurvedic treatment of headache does not focus only on alleviating the pain but
aims at treating the rod cause in Holistic way, for long term healing.
Naysay: installation of medicated tail am (oil) prepared in classical way having
immense medicinal property into the nostril clears the doshas in the sorts (channesl)
and relives from the disease. This is one of the Panchakarma Procedure.
Few drugs such as ara, Brahmi, Snatavari, Tatamani, Mustia, Yastimadhu, Triphala,
Pippali, Vacha, Kusta is used in treating migraine.
Advice: To avoid direct sunlight.
Avoid especially at night, chocolates, Birth control pills.
