• Photosynthesis: Process in which plants and
cyanobacteria use light energy to convert
carbon dioxide into glucose (sugar)
• Cellular Respiration: Process in which glucose
(sugar) is broken down in the presence of
oxygen to produce energy (ATP). Occurs in the
mitochondria
• Autotroph: An organism that is able to make
its own food using energy from sunlight or
chemicals
• Heterotroph: Organism that cannot make its
own food. It obtains food by consuming other
living things.
• Adenosine triphosphate (ATP): Consists of
adenine, a 5-carbon sugar called ribose, and 3
phosphate groups. Cells use ATP to store and
release energy. When a phosphate breaks off
of ATP it produces adenosine diphosphate
(ADP) and releases energy
