School Spankings: The Corporal Punishment Debate
If you are in your late twenties and beyond, then it is for sure a fact that out of the few things
you remember about your school, one of them will be the school spanking as a punishment. To
define the phrase of school spanking, it means a harsh slap on the back side of students as the
means to punish them on some wrong-doing.
The school spanking punishment is not only limited to a single country or an institution, as a
matter of fact it is one of the most common ways of punishing school children throughout the
world. Research states that school spanking as corporal punishment is legal and followed in as
many as 20 states in America. However, it is completely banned in more than 24 western
counties of the world. What this shows is that there is a division in argument between people
who favor such what might seem harsh steps towards punishment and people who are
completely against it. We have to note one thing here, it is the school kids probably in their
early childhood or teenage we are talking about, not some university students who have not
completed their thesis and are getting punished. So the impact of being physical at such an
early stage can be adverse. In this article we will briefly touch upon the main justifications for
both parties.
Firstly people who are in favor of supporting this punishment say those students need some
negative reinforcement in form of physical punishment to make them really work hard in trying
to achieve something good at the end of day, because they want to avoid this punishment. If
students are not scared enough they might not try out their ultimate effort and give up easily. If
something is as harsh as they do not like and scares them, they will give their utmost in order to
avoid that.
Now the second side of the argument very categorically states that any physical punishment at
school can lead to a permanent damage to self-confidence or motivation to work hard and
study. If in the name of negative reinforcement a child starts hating school, this will not do well
on him and for his future. So it is important to find ways that alternatively clarify the message
and also achieve its objective, rather than resorting to more physical behavior.
