The diversity in the workplace is one of the most significant discussions in the global business and
economy. The diversity in the workplace can include the different races, backgrounds, beliefs,

It is 1996 and you walk into a local diner. You are seated and greeted by a waitress who takes your
order, and while you are waiting for your food, you look around and notice the same waitress taking
three other families order as well as other waitress and you are thinking that they are overworking the
women at this minimum wage establishment. It is now current day 2017 and not much has changed.
Many women are getting taken advantage off at jobs by portraying them as sex objects to help catch
the attention of more customers. When women are put in position where their only option to make

Road map First I will show an example from the book Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich, on
how women are getting taken advantage off by forcing them to perform sexuality. Then by
adding a supporting example from the article "'Que Viva La Minifalda!' Secretaries, Miniskirts
and Daily Practices of Sexuality in the Public Sector in Lima" by Lorraine Nencel. Next I will
talk about management and how it subliminally creates competition between workers, turning
women and men against each other by showing examples from the book and in the article
"Cliques, Rumors, and Gossip by the Water Cooler: Female Bullying in the Workplace" by
Crothers e.t. Al. Thirdly , I will talk about how because of the previous two, women feel
disempowered making them have no voice which does not allow them to come together and
unionize by showing an example from "Work Uncertainty and the Promotion of Professional
Women: The Case of Law Firm Partnership". Finally I'll say what the opposing side would argue

Isms in society have a way of dividing the country down many different lines of identity; for
example, ethnicity, age, weight, and religious preference are aspects that compose an individual that
are often discriminated against. With recent events, the issue of sexism was made apparent to
Americans. Sexism is defined by Merriam–Webster dictionary as, "prejudice or discrimination based
on sex; especially :discrimination against women" (Sexism). This history of injustice against
women dates back centuries to the beginning of American history, as women were denied the right
to vote, own property, or attend school. Women's suffrage movements gained national recognition
in the 1920's thanks to activists such as Susan B. Anthony who described her efforts in the

With statistical evidence having been recorded over several decades, it is evident that women,
especially in the workplace, are not treated with the same respect as their male counterparts. Through
the recognition of women's struggles throughout American history and the acknowledgement of the
struggles women face to this day, progress can be made in efforts to remedy the misogynistic
practice of sexism.
The United States has never known a time of true gender equality as sexism has its roots in Colonial
times, America's infancy. During this time, education for girls was secondary to that of boys and
they were only permitted to attend classes when there was enough room for them, this was often
over the summer while the boys were out working. Rather than being taught arithmetic and English,
girls learned how to cook, take care of children, and clean the home. Over time, women's rights
activists such as Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Stanton began to fight for societal change in

aspects of women 's lives. This discrimination harms women in two ways. First, women directly
experience stressful events. The experience of sexism is so common that some research suggests

When I go places with my friends, I cannot help but notice the obvious difference between my
male friends and female friends. Men and women are very different; however, this does not mean
that they should have separate roles in society. I believe the United States has done a nice job of

Job Classification is another common problem women face in the workplace. Another common
problem for women in the workplace is not getting as many benefits as men. An example of this is
if a woman's company's health insurance policy does not cover their spouse just because it is
assumed that he will have his own benefits, while your male coworkers have their wives covered by

Besides the previous reasons stated, one of the most common problems for women in the workplace
is being discriminated against due to pregnancy. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

are refusing to hire a pregnant woman, firing or demoting a pregnant women, denying a woman
the same or similar job when she returns, or treating a pregnant employee differently than other
temporarily disabled employees. Many women get laid off and even fired from their jobs because
they get pregnant. Often male bosses will give excuses for these situations saying that the woman is
unable to do their job or that their missing attendance will be a problem due to their pregnancy.
