  2. 2. The word of the decade is Collaboration. And using Google Apps for Education gets everyone collaborating. Kids love sharing! As we all know, using the Comments feature is one of the most powerful features of Google Apps. As a teacher, you don’t have to fumble through your bag looking for your stack of sticky notes and the two-inch pile of student papers. You can pull up a student’s document and insert comments right where you want the student to see the note. Instead of having students use sticky-notes of varied colors, students can make comments directly on the document, as well. Additionally, writing good, specific comments is an art. Your comment writing skills are unsurpassed because of report cards. You didn’t get that good overnight. You’ve been practicing on stacks of student essays, emails to parents, and more report cards. Students need practice too. Let’s look at some very useful tips that you can apply in your classroom and we’ll explore how to use Comments in Google Apps. www.synergyse.com
  3. 3. Tips for younger students (K-5) 1. Revising versus editing. Identify the difference between the two. It’s not uncommon for kids to get stuck looking for periods and capital letters instead of looking for ways to help a peer improve his content. 1. Provide focus. Give students one thing to look for and provide comments about, like a good topic sentence or descriptive language. 1. Use color. Showing students how to highlight in a specific color will help the author see what her peer was looking for. For example, make the topic sentences yellow, make the descriptive language orange, etc. 1. Use an acronym- RISE, TAG. Using a catchy word like TAG helps students remember what they are looking for. a. TAG- T (Tell the author something you like) A (Ask the author a question) G (give a positive suggestion) a. RISE- Reflect- Inquire- Suggest- Elevate www.synergyse.com
  4. 4. Tips for everyone 1. Honesty with politeness. Have students think about feedback that helps them. What does it sound like? Does it sound mean or degrading? 1. Specific. Ask students the difference between a comment like, “Great story” and one like, “I like the use of the word gusty to describe the weather in Texas.” Guide them to offer specific comments to improve the work. 1. Provide guidelines and rubrics for good feedback. Why not? Students need to know what the expectations are, and evaluating their comments will help them learn how to provide good feedback. (See resources below). 1. Practice writing Yelp reviews. People read good Yelp reviews, not the ones that don’t make sense, right? Find and critique some good ones. www.synergyse.com

Using Comments in Google Apps In Docs- Inserting Comments and the Comment Stream ● Comments can be inserted: o Using the Insert menu, (or keystroke shortcut) and selecting Comment. o Using the icon for comments. o Using the button next to Share. Using this button will also give you a stream of all the comments posted and resolved. o You can also use the Revision History in the File menu to see how the comments have affected the students writing. www.synergyse.com

In Sheets- Comments versus Notes ● When making comments in Sheets a small yellow triangle appears in the top right corner of a cell. ● Creating a note will put a small black triangle in the top right corner of the cell. ● In both cases when your mouse is hovering over the cell the comment or note will appear. ● Comments can be resolved, notes cannot.
