ABSTRACT
Background: Lacerated wound is the injuries of skin, tissue, and vascular that leads to blood
loss and increases risk to infection. The patients with lacerated wound require pre-hospital
wound care.
Objective: To examine perceived severity and pre-hospital wound care among Thai Muslims in
southern Thailand.
Method: This descriptive research was conducted and one hundred Thai Muslim patients with
lacerated wound who were visiting the emergency room of a community hospital in southern
Thailand comprised the sample. The research instruments composed of 1) Demographic Data
Questionnaire, 2) Perceived Severity of Lacerated Wound Scale, and 3) Pre-hospital Wound
Care Behavior Scale. The content validity was tested by a group of experts. Reliabilities of
Perceived Severity of Lacerated Wound Scale and Pre-hospital Wound Care Behavior Scale
were tested by percentage of test-retest agreement, yielding 93.75 % and 99.54 % respectively.
The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.
Result: The total score of perceived severity of lacerated wound of the sample was at a high
level (M = 5.05, SD = 1.85). The majority of the sample (78 %) had performed pre-hospital
wound care. More than half of them (56.4 %) had stopped bleeding by direct pressure at the
wound, 30.8 % cleaned the wound using water, and 56.4 % closed the wound by a piece of
cloth.
Conclusion: This finding can be used to promote proper first aid practice after getting wounds
that would decrease complications and decrease duration and cost of health care.
