2. Prologue Far into the tropics, hidden by a vale, there exists an island chain: Blissful Island, Shipwreck Cove, Isle Du Sole, and Firefly Island. In this region, ships pass by unaware and planes fly by over head seeing only the ocean below.
3. *************** On the Blissful Island the villagers gathered for the regularly scheduled conclave. Unfortunately it digressed to the usual bickering. โWhat should we do,โ yelled one sad looking sailor. โIf the Vale falls โฆ,โ shouted the man with the tattooed face, trying to be heard over the din. โI donโt even want to think about it,โ the sailor responded.
4. The shaman stood in disgust, โYou canโt blame Hume for everything,โ the shaman stated, โHis soul is that of a free spirit and we could not contain him. His need to explore eventually outweighed the wishes of the village. โNone of this would have happened if Hume wasnโt so eager to see the outside world,โ the old women hissed.
5. โShut up,โ a booming voice from the corner expressed, โYou two have been fighting about Hume leaving since Irvine was a youngling.โ He stood up and walked over to the shaman, who had taken his seat again.
6. โShaman! What do the gods be telling you?โ โHe couldnโt hear the Gods if they whispered in his ears,โ the old women cackled. โOld hag, shut up,โ the man in the red bandanna replied. โI wasnโt talking to you. Now, boy what be they saying?โ โCaptain Willford, there is nothing to tell. The Gods have not spoken to me.โ
7. โSee, this is all Humeโs fault. The gods wouldnโt leave us if he was still here.โ โWomanโฆโ โHe had a gift. . .โ โWoman, I will not tell you again, to shut your mouth.โ โCaptain Willford canโt see or even speak to the Gods, and yet he tells me the seer to be quiet. I told you, I saw this many years ago and this is Humeโs fault. The Gods know the truth.
8. โCarma, hold your tongue,โ the traditionally dressed woman strongly stated as she walked in, โThe Gods have not abandon us. We have forsaken them, by ignoring our traditional values, and listening to false prophets;โ as she pointedly looked at Carma. โWe must return to our traditions,โ she stated as she looked at each of those at the meeting.
9. โAnd you our spiritual advisors, you traitors, you let Hume get away,โ Carma insisted. โI have done as the gods have commanded me, as I have since the day I was elevated to this position to speak on their behalf. And you call us traitors, you who influence the villagers for your own ends.โ Captain Willford seethed after witnessing the smile that rose from the old batโs mouth, this confirmed his suspicions that she was working against the best interests of the people. โNow,โ continued the traditionally dressed woman, โI believe this meeting has now come to an end, the night is late and Captain Irvine needs to be off with the morning tide. โ
10. ****************** โHoney, I got a great idea, why donโt we visit Gibson and see what heโs been up to,โ Hume said as he dialed the phone, โWeโll have a nice family vacation.โ Kiara, a bit stunned by his sudden interest to visit their son, she continued playing with their daughter. โI want to see brother,โ the little girl said looking up at Hume. โThatโs my girl,โ Hume said. Kiara smiled as tickled their daughter; but chose not to say anything.
11. *********** It took a few days to make the arrangements; but before they knew it, it was time to set sail. โWhy are you insisting on taking a boat there, why arenโt we flying?โ Kiara asked as they stepped out of the dock house. โSo we can spend time together,โ Hume answered, โYou know since my promotion that my job has left me so little time to spend with the family, I thought this would be a good idea.โ โYouโre right; it has been a while since the three of us spent any time together. Let alone,โ her voice shifted to a purr, โanytime for just the two of us.โ
12. They ran towards the boat as giddy as their daughter. Hume called โCaptain Greaves as soon as youโre ready we can be off.โ
13. ******* As the sun sank on the distant horizon and the night rose clear, the stars twinkling bright as each appeared; the traditionally garbed woman stood in front the large fountain, she made an offering, โPlease gods,โ in a soft, reverent tone. โPlease guide us, show me the path that must be followed.โ
14. The fountain suddenly ceased to flow clear cool water, it turned crimson and began to spew fire. A deep, gravelly voice emerged, โListen to my wordsโฆ โPriestess, heed my call, a task for yours to oversee and guide with your craft. A child will soon arrive, from the sea tossed currents from far away shores. This dewy jinxed lilโ urchin and her descendants for generations ten, a great charge is theirs to fulfill. To protect the Source against the dominance of great evil, an uncertain doomed future lurks. This warning will come true when if a promise yours wonโt keep. But enlightenment hers will bring to those who aid their jinxed course.โ โOh, gods; what does it mean?โ โโฆsalvation can be attained; ignore me andโฆโ โOh, godsโ
15. *************** The morning was just dawning as the boat docked; Gibson stood waiting for his family to disembark. โGibson,โ Hume said, greeting the man waiting, โYou look good.โ โHe looks nothing of the sort,โ Kiara said sharply. โHello mother,โ Gibson said flatly, quickly turning to look at Hume; where he found a little girl hiding behind his father, โAnd who is this little sprite?โ Hume smiled down on his little girl, โOh this little one?โ he said with mock question. โIโm Demeter Romani, and Iโm five years old,โ she said and held up her hand. โNice to meet you, Iโm your brother, Gibson;โ he said laughingly.
16. Everyone was having a good laugh over Demeterโsโ childish ways, when Gibson suddenly received a message that he was needed at the clinic. โWe can get together later,โ Gibson said as they hugged, โwhere will you be staying while you are here in the islands?โ They exchanged information. They explored the island, enjoying themselves on their vacation.
18. Kiara tries her hand at fishing. The family explores the islandโs hospitalities, while waiting for Gibson to get off work. Getting back his money Finding sea life.
19. *************** While Kiara and Demeter had decided to have some โgirl timeโ back at the hotel; Hume had made plans of his own. The night was warmer than expected, and Hume decided to change his clothes; but he thought he felt something strange in the air. He walked along the gravel road towards the local tavern; a short distance away he noticed a rugged man in rather flashy clothes.
20. โYou havenโt changed much,โ Hume said. โI could say the same for you, but you mightnโ be a bit round the middle.โ Hume disregarded the old manโs jest, โDad, itโs good to see ya.โ Captain Willford reached out and hugged Hume, โMy son, comenโ home aโ last.โ Hume returned the affection by patting his father on the back, โIโm not coming home. I need to talk to you. Iโve got some things that Iโm worried about.โ โWhy donโt we head inside, I hear the service and the drinks are better than the last time I was here.โ โYou always seem to find a reason to enjoy a pint.โ โAnd you donโt?โ they both laughed as they walked in; where they sat at the only open table.
21. โItโs my little girl,โ Hume paused a moment, โsheโs always been a little different, but lately itโs more than thatโฆ I mean, I canโt put my finger on it.โ โWell Iโm not sure that I can help ya. Itโs not like yeโve kept in touch all these years.โ โYeah, I guess youโre right,โ Hume laughs as he takes pictures out of his wallet, โMaybe I should tell you what Iโve been up to these last 20 or so years.โ Buckler nodded his head, but said nothing. โWell I met a woman shortly after leavingโฆโ he explained how he and Kiara had met, then dated, unto their wedding, at this Buckler snorted.
22. โYou married, thought you always had the fear of being tied down, losing your freedoms and such.โ โWell there was something between me and Kiara; something that I just didnโt feel towards the females back home. When I look at my life with Kiara, I realize thereโs no one Iโd rather be with. We have two great kidsโฆโ Hume had started to hand a couple of photos over to his father; Buckler cuts Hume off โTwo? You only said you had the little girl before.โ Buckler looks at the photos. โGibson, our oldest is in his late 20โs now and never seemed to exhibit what Demeter has at five. She talks to the plants and has told us that sheโs talking to fairies. Sheโs tried to show me, but thereโs nothing there. Um,โ Hume laughed, โI remember as a young kid seeing those people with wingsโฆโ โThe Faerie Folk, those that were not to have been trifled with, if memory be correct.โ
23. โAh, yeah. That you did. But, you see when Demi says sheโs talking to these faeries of herโs there is nothing there, at least nothing as obvious as those winged folks.โ โHumph! She sounds quiet interesting, would it be possible to be meeting with her?โ Hume explained that they would be leaving on the morning tide. โThen maybe you and Demi might be coming out here next year? She might be ready for school?โ
24. โOn the island? Old man, Kiara insisted that we hire tutors for Gibson, she wouldnโt even hear about him going off to school; she nearly had kittens when he decided to go off to medical school. And when he decided to join the Peace Corps she had a breakdown, the only thing that brought her out of it was when we found out she was expecting. After Demi was born, Kiara was even more over-protective with her than she had been with Gibson. So, can you even imagine me trying to send Demi off to the far corners of the world to go to school?โ Buckler thought to himself, โThis woman got me son enchanted worse than a Siren,โ when he spoke it was without bias towards his sonโs family, โYour wife may fear for her family, but shouldnโt you make sure of any possibility pertaining to your daughter? What if Demi has the gift? She will need training.โ Hume had a look of surprise run across his face, โI didnโt say that Demi was gifted.โ
25. โIf she be, then sheโd be needinโ training. Yeโve no idea what she might be or not be. Yโa was left on me stoop, I donโt know your heritage, for allโs I know ye might be mine; Iโve know a few ladies in my time.โ Hume quietly responded, โIโve had my doubts, but you were always a good father so I never voiced them.โ Buckler leveled his eyes on his son, โWhat doubts? How? Who?โ โCarmaโฆโ Hume didnโt even need to finish. โThat old hag, sheโs been trying to turn me son against me for too many years! And now sheโs been openly stirring up the people; and blaming you for all the islandโs misfortunes. Sheโs just pissing me off.โ He continued to mutter under his breath.
26. โWhat the โell is she blaming me about?โ โBecause you left the island.โ โI can understand why youโre worried with her stirring up the people and all. But considering this, would now be a good time for me to reappear with Demi?โ โHang the old bat, you need to know the truth.โ โLook, give me some time to think about it.โ
27. โLook, give me some time to think about it.โ โYou let your old man know.โ โI will,โ Hume was still uneasy about all of this. The two men spent the rest of the night chatting about old times parting just before dawn.
28. The Sorceress, Lilith, paced back and forth waiting for the others to arrive to the meeting, โWhere are they?โ she muttered. Slowly the heads of the families arrived, she noticed the old hag, Carma; Captain Irvine; the mid wife, Angel and her husband amongst them.
29. โPriestess, heed my call, a task for yours to oversee and guide with your craft. But enlightenment hers will bring to those who aid their jinxed course.โ Once every one had taken their seats, she told the people about receiving a message from the gods:
30. The room erupted into a loud cacophony of voices. The old hag took this opportunity to start in on Buckler again, but her words were lost on him, he appeared distracted; although her viperโs tongue incited some others.
31. KRAABOOM! A loud clap of thunder reverberated across the island. Lilith took the opportunity, โCarma, hold your tongue. You have spread enough of your poison amongst the people, and it must stop. Listen everybody, the gods have given us this chance at hope and we must seize the opportunity.โ KRAABOOM, another clap of thunder reverberates across the island; it was decided that the meeting would come to an end.
33. The room is empty, except for the lone man sitting under the window; Buckler stares at the photo, and ponders his recent meeting with his son.
34. Hume is on the deck with Demeter, watching the sun set. At the first star she sees, she asks, โIs it time?โ
35. โItโs time,โ Hume takes up a sparkler from a box and lights it, a short distance away fireworks erupt in the night sky. While they are enjoying the spectacle, Captain Greaves gives a shout, โStorms approaching.โ
36. โDemi,โ Hume says hugging his daughter, โget below and put your life jacket on.โ Hume heads to the wheel house.
37. โHow bad is it?โ Hume asks. โIt just appeared, Sir, it wasnโt on any of the earlier weather reports.โ Greaves pauses, โSir, I donโt think we can sail in this. Iโm heading for shore.โ โDo as you think best captain,โ Hume replies. Suddenly the boat lurches. โGet your life vest on and head for the life boats.โ
38. Hume rushes below to his family, when he sees them Kiara is screaming about the boat sinking; he gathers them together as they make their way towards the life boat.
39. Another rogue wave hits the boat before theyโve had a chance to reach the life boat. There is a loud cracking noise, Demeter screams as she is thrown overboard. Hume sees her as she bobs nearby on the waves; it is hard for Hume to judge her condition with the rough seas.
40. Kiara is knocked unconscious by something coming lose and falls over board.
41. Hume goes in after her; he struggles to keep himself and Kiara above water at the same time yelling franticly, โDemi! Demi!โ Hume makes his way to the life boat, but Demeter is nowhere to be seen. โDemi! Baby girl! Demeter!โ Hume calls out even more frantically; but there is no response.
42. ************** After the nights storm young Neville decided to see what treasure could be found on the beach, when he got to the waterโs edge, he found something unexpected, โMommy!โ the boy screamed.
43. Angel rushed to see what was the matter with her son. The boy leaned over and poked at the girl, as his mother feared the worst; the girl moaned. โNeville, go and get your father,โ the woman said as she started to examine the child.
44. ********** Later that night, Capt. Irvine and Lilith arrived to check out the situation. โThe girl doesnโt remember anything,โ Angel explained, โNot even her name.โ Lilith, โItโs not uncommon for someone to have amnesia after a traumatic experience.โ โI could patrol the nearby waters,โ Capt. Irvine explained, โShe couldnโt have come from too far away.โ โIโll check with our sister islands, to see if they have any reports of a missing little girl. That storm was pretty bad last night,โ stated Lilith. โWhat should we do until then?โ Angel asked.
45. โKeep the girl with you; we donโt want to upset her anymore than sheโs already been.โ Lilith smiled, โBesides, Iโm sure youโll enjoy having a girl around after having to deal with a house full of boys.โ Lilith got up to leave, โSorry to rush away but, if I want to make it to Firefly Island before night fall tomorrow Iโll have to leave early.โ โNo need to explain,โ Dorian said.
46. A few days had passed since the young girl washed ashore, Angel had taken to calling her โStormyโ. When asked why, Angel explained that it was because she had been brought to them after the fierce storm. Lilith came to check on the newest member to Angelโs family; she saw two young children, a girl and a boy playing down by the waterโs edge. Lilith pulled out her wand, she paused, and then she put it away before anyone should see it.
47. Angelโs son, Ulrich, called over to Stormy, โHey want to play cops and robbers, Stormy?โ โUmโ โHey, hey, come on Stormy!โโฆ
49. โฆ โStormy. Hey, Stormy. Earth to Sis,โ Ulrich waved his hand in โhis sisterโsโ face. He and Stormy were sitting on a bench at the park of Shipwreck Cove University. โHey where did you go?โ โJust remembering the day we all became a family. So, how do you like college life?โ
50. โWhereโs the party at?โ She just smiled, โWouldnโt you like to know?โ They both had a good laugh. โWeโre going to be late for class.โ
