The prologue to my new legacy.

2. Prologue Far into the tropics, hidden by a vale, there exists an island chain: Blissful Island, Shipwreck Cove, Isle Du Sole, and Firefly Island. In this region, ships pass by unaware and planes fly by over head seeing only the ocean below.

3. *************** On the Blissful Island the villagers gathered for the regularly scheduled conclave. Unfortunately it digressed to the usual bickering. “What should we do,” yelled one sad looking sailor. “If the Vale falls …,” shouted the man with the tattooed face, trying to be heard over the din. “I don’t even want to think about it,” the sailor responded.

4. The shaman stood in disgust, “You can’t blame Hume for everything,” the shaman stated, “His soul is that of a free spirit and we could not contain him. His need to explore eventually outweighed the wishes of the village. “None of this would have happened if Hume wasn’t so eager to see the outside world,” the old women hissed.

5. “Shut up,” a booming voice from the corner expressed, “You two have been fighting about Hume leaving since Irvine was a youngling.” He stood up and walked over to the shaman, who had taken his seat again.

6. “Shaman! What do the gods be telling you?” “He couldn’t hear the Gods if they whispered in his ears,” the old women cackled. “Old hag, shut up,” the man in the red bandanna replied. “I wasn’t talking to you. Now, boy what be they saying?” “Captain Willford, there is nothing to tell. The Gods have not spoken to me.”

7. “See, this is all Hume’s fault. The gods wouldn’t leave us if he was still here.” “Woman…” “He had a gift. . .” “Woman, I will not tell you again, to shut your mouth.” “Captain Willford can’t see or even speak to the Gods, and yet he tells me the seer to be quiet. I told you, I saw this many years ago and this is Hume’s fault. The Gods know the truth.

8. “Carma, hold your tongue,” the traditionally dressed woman strongly stated as she walked in, “The Gods have not abandon us. We have forsaken them, by ignoring our traditional values, and listening to false prophets;” as she pointedly looked at Carma. “We must return to our traditions,” she stated as she looked at each of those at the meeting.

9. “And you our spiritual advisors, you traitors, you let Hume get away,” Carma insisted. “I have done as the gods have commanded me, as I have since the day I was elevated to this position to speak on their behalf. And you call us traitors, you who influence the villagers for your own ends.” Captain Willford seethed after witnessing the smile that rose from the old bat’s mouth, this confirmed his suspicions that she was working against the best interests of the people. “Now,” continued the traditionally dressed woman, “I believe this meeting has now come to an end, the night is late and Captain Irvine needs to be off with the morning tide. “

10. ****************** “Honey, I got a great idea, why don’t we visit Gibson and see what he’s been up to,” Hume said as he dialed the phone, “We’ll have a nice family vacation.” Kiara, a bit stunned by his sudden interest to visit their son, she continued playing with their daughter. “I want to see brother,” the little girl said looking up at Hume. “That’s my girl,” Hume said. Kiara smiled as tickled their daughter; but chose not to say anything.

11. *********** It took a few days to make the arrangements; but before they knew it, it was time to set sail. “Why are you insisting on taking a boat there, why aren’t we flying?” Kiara asked as they stepped out of the dock house. “So we can spend time together,” Hume answered, “You know since my promotion that my job has left me so little time to spend with the family, I thought this would be a good idea.” “You’re right; it has been a while since the three of us spent any time together. Let alone,” her voice shifted to a purr, “anytime for just the two of us.”

12. They ran towards the boat as giddy as their daughter. Hume called “Captain Greaves as soon as you’re ready we can be off.”

13. ******* As the sun sank on the distant horizon and the night rose clear, the stars twinkling bright as each appeared; the traditionally garbed woman stood in front the large fountain, she made an offering, “Please gods,” in a soft, reverent tone. “Please guide us, show me the path that must be followed.”

14. The fountain suddenly ceased to flow clear cool water, it turned crimson and began to spew fire. A deep, gravelly voice emerged, “Listen to my words… “Priestess, heed my call, a task for yours to oversee and guide with your craft. A child will soon arrive, from the sea tossed currents from far away shores. This dewy jinxed lil’ urchin and her descendants for generations ten, a great charge is theirs to fulfill. To protect the Source against the dominance of great evil, an uncertain doomed future lurks. This warning will come true when if a promise yours won’t keep. But enlightenment hers will bring to those who aid their jinxed course.” “Oh, gods; what does it mean?” “…salvation can be attained; ignore me and…” “Oh, gods”

15. *************** The morning was just dawning as the boat docked; Gibson stood waiting for his family to disembark. “Gibson,” Hume said, greeting the man waiting, “You look good.” “He looks nothing of the sort,” Kiara said sharply. “Hello mother,” Gibson said flatly, quickly turning to look at Hume; where he found a little girl hiding behind his father, “And who is this little sprite?” Hume smiled down on his little girl, “Oh this little one?” he said with mock question. “I’m Demeter Romani, and I’m five years old,” she said and held up her hand. “Nice to meet you, I’m your brother, Gibson;” he said laughingly.

16. Everyone was having a good laugh over Demeter’s’ childish ways, when Gibson suddenly received a message that he was needed at the clinic. “We can get together later,” Gibson said as they hugged, “where will you be staying while you are here in the islands?” They exchanged information. They explored the island, enjoying themselves on their vacation.

17. Vacation moments

18. Kiara tries her hand at fishing. The family explores the island’s hospitalities, while waiting for Gibson to get off work. Getting back his money Finding sea life.

19. *************** While Kiara and Demeter had decided to have some “girl time” back at the hotel; Hume had made plans of his own. The night was warmer than expected, and Hume decided to change his clothes; but he thought he felt something strange in the air. He walked along the gravel road towards the local tavern; a short distance away he noticed a rugged man in rather flashy clothes.

20. “You haven’t changed much,” Hume said. “I could say the same for you, but you mightn’ be a bit round the middle.” Hume disregarded the old man’s jest, “Dad, it’s good to see ya.” Captain Willford reached out and hugged Hume, “My son, comen’ home a’ last.” Hume returned the affection by patting his father on the back, “I’m not coming home. I need to talk to you. I’ve got some things that I’m worried about.” “Why don’t we head inside, I hear the service and the drinks are better than the last time I was here.” “You always seem to find a reason to enjoy a pint.” “And you don’t?” they both laughed as they walked in; where they sat at the only open table.

21. “It’s my little girl,” Hume paused a moment, “she’s always been a little different, but lately it’s more than that… I mean, I can’t put my finger on it.” “Well I’m not sure that I can help ya. It’s not like ye’ve kept in touch all these years.” “Yeah, I guess you’re right,” Hume laughs as he takes pictures out of his wallet, “Maybe I should tell you what I’ve been up to these last 20 or so years.” Buckler nodded his head, but said nothing. “Well I met a woman shortly after leaving…” he explained how he and Kiara had met, then dated, unto their wedding, at this Buckler snorted.

22. “You married, thought you always had the fear of being tied down, losing your freedoms and such.” “Well there was something between me and Kiara; something that I just didn’t feel towards the females back home. When I look at my life with Kiara, I realize there’s no one I’d rather be with. We have two great kids…” Hume had started to hand a couple of photos over to his father; Buckler cuts Hume off “Two? You only said you had the little girl before.” Buckler looks at the photos. “Gibson, our oldest is in his late 20’s now and never seemed to exhibit what Demeter has at five. She talks to the plants and has told us that she’s talking to fairies. She’s tried to show me, but there’s nothing there. Um,” Hume laughed, “I remember as a young kid seeing those people with wings…” “The Faerie Folk, those that were not to have been trifled with, if memory be correct.”

23. “Ah, yeah. That you did. But, you see when Demi says she’s talking to these faeries of her’s there is nothing there, at least nothing as obvious as those winged folks.” “Humph! She sounds quiet interesting, would it be possible to be meeting with her?” Hume explained that they would be leaving on the morning tide. “Then maybe you and Demi might be coming out here next year? She might be ready for school?”

24. “On the island? Old man, Kiara insisted that we hire tutors for Gibson, she wouldn’t even hear about him going off to school; she nearly had kittens when he decided to go off to medical school. And when he decided to join the Peace Corps she had a breakdown, the only thing that brought her out of it was when we found out she was expecting. After Demi was born, Kiara was even more over-protective with her than she had been with Gibson. So, can you even imagine me trying to send Demi off to the far corners of the world to go to school?” Buckler thought to himself, ‘This woman got me son enchanted worse than a Siren,’ when he spoke it was without bias towards his son’s family, “Your wife may fear for her family, but shouldn’t you make sure of any possibility pertaining to your daughter? What if Demi has the gift? She will need training.” Hume had a look of surprise run across his face, “I didn’t say that Demi was gifted.”

25. “If she be, then she’d be needin’ training. Ye’ve no idea what she might be or not be. Y’a was left on me stoop, I don’t know your heritage, for all’s I know ye might be mine; I’ve know a few ladies in my time.” Hume quietly responded, “I’ve had my doubts, but you were always a good father so I never voiced them.” Buckler leveled his eyes on his son, “What doubts? How? Who?” “Carma…” Hume didn’t even need to finish. “That old hag, she’s been trying to turn me son against me for too many years! And now she’s been openly stirring up the people; and blaming you for all the island’s misfortunes. She’s just pissing me off.” He continued to mutter under his breath.

26. “What the ‘ell is she blaming me about?” “Because you left the island.” “I can understand why you’re worried with her stirring up the people and all. But considering this, would now be a good time for me to reappear with Demi?” “Hang the old bat, you need to know the truth.” “Look, give me some time to think about it.”

27. “Look, give me some time to think about it.” “You let your old man know.” “I will,” Hume was still uneasy about all of this. The two men spent the rest of the night chatting about old times parting just before dawn.

28. The Sorceress, Lilith, paced back and forth waiting for the others to arrive to the meeting, “Where are they?” she muttered. Slowly the heads of the families arrived, she noticed the old hag, Carma; Captain Irvine; the mid wife, Angel and her husband amongst them.

29. “Priestess, heed my call, a task for yours to oversee and guide with your craft. A child will soon arrive, from the sea tossed currents from far away shores. This dewy jinxed lil’ urchin and her descendants for generations ten, a great charge is theirs to fulfill. To protect the Source against the dominance of great evil, an uncertain doomed future lurks. This warning will come true when if a promise yours won’t keep. But enlightenment hers will bring to those who aid their jinxed course.” Once every one had taken their seats, she told the people about receiving a message from the gods:

30. The room erupted into a loud cacophony of voices. The old hag took this opportunity to start in on Buckler again, but her words were lost on him, he appeared distracted; although her viper’s tongue incited some others.

31. KRAABOOM! A loud clap of thunder reverberated across the island. Lilith took the opportunity, “Carma, hold your tongue. You have spread enough of your poison amongst the people, and it must stop. Listen everybody, the gods have given us this chance at hope and we must seize the opportunity.” KRAABOOM, another clap of thunder reverberates across the island; it was decided that the meeting would come to an end.

32. They rush home to batten down the hatches.

33. The room is empty, except for the lone man sitting under the window; Buckler stares at the photo, and ponders his recent meeting with his son.

34. Hume is on the deck with Demeter, watching the sun set. At the first star she sees, she asks, “Is it time?”

35. “It’s time,” Hume takes up a sparkler from a box and lights it, a short distance away fireworks erupt in the night sky. While they are enjoying the spectacle, Captain Greaves gives a shout, “Storms approaching.”

36. “Demi,” Hume says hugging his daughter, “get below and put your life jacket on.” Hume heads to the wheel house.

37. “How bad is it?” Hume asks. “It just appeared, Sir, it wasn’t on any of the earlier weather reports.” Greaves pauses, “Sir, I don’t think we can sail in this. I’m heading for shore.” “Do as you think best captain,” Hume replies. Suddenly the boat lurches. “Get your life vest on and head for the life boats.”

38. Hume rushes below to his family, when he sees them Kiara is screaming about the boat sinking; he gathers them together as they make their way towards the life boat.

39. Another rogue wave hits the boat before they’ve had a chance to reach the life boat. There is a loud cracking noise, Demeter screams as she is thrown overboard. Hume sees her as she bobs nearby on the waves; it is hard for Hume to judge her condition with the rough seas.

40. Kiara is knocked unconscious by something coming lose and falls over board.

41. Hume goes in after her; he struggles to keep himself and Kiara above water at the same time yelling franticly, “Demi! Demi!” Hume makes his way to the life boat, but Demeter is nowhere to be seen. “Demi! Baby girl! Demeter!” Hume calls out even more frantically; but there is no response.

42. ************** After the nights storm young Neville decided to see what treasure could be found on the beach, when he got to the water’s edge, he found something unexpected, “Mommy!” the boy screamed.

43. Angel rushed to see what was the matter with her son. The boy leaned over and poked at the girl, as his mother feared the worst; the girl moaned. “Neville, go and get your father,” the woman said as she started to examine the child.

44. ********** Later that night, Capt. Irvine and Lilith arrived to check out the situation. “The girl doesn’t remember anything,” Angel explained, “Not even her name.” Lilith, “It’s not uncommon for someone to have amnesia after a traumatic experience.” “I could patrol the nearby waters,” Capt. Irvine explained, “She couldn’t have come from too far away.” “I’ll check with our sister islands, to see if they have any reports of a missing little girl. That storm was pretty bad last night,” stated Lilith. “What should we do until then?” Angel asked.

45. “Keep the girl with you; we don’t want to upset her anymore than she’s already been.” Lilith smiled, “Besides, I’m sure you’ll enjoy having a girl around after having to deal with a house full of boys.” Lilith got up to leave, “Sorry to rush away but, if I want to make it to Firefly Island before night fall tomorrow I’ll have to leave early.” “No need to explain,” Dorian said.

46. A few days had passed since the young girl washed ashore, Angel had taken to calling her ‘Stormy’. When asked why, Angel explained that it was because she had been brought to them after the fierce storm. Lilith came to check on the newest member to Angel’s family; she saw two young children, a girl and a boy playing down by the water’s edge. Lilith pulled out her wand, she paused, and then she put it away before anyone should see it.

47. Angel’s son, Ulrich, called over to Stormy, “Hey want to play cops and robbers, Stormy?” “Um” “Hey, hey, come on Stormy!”…

48. …

49. … “Stormy. Hey, Stormy. Earth to Sis,” Ulrich waved his hand in ‘his sister’s’ face. He and Stormy were sitting on a bench at the park of Shipwreck Cove University. “Hey where did you go?” “Just remembering the day we all became a family. So, how do you like college life?”

50. “Where’s the party at?” She just smiled, “Wouldn’t you like to know?” They both had a good laugh. “We’re going to be late for class.”
