The
Experience
API (xAPI)
& the Learning
Record Store
(LRS)
The Experience API, also known as xAPI, is
an open data specification for granular, in-the-
moment data collection across learning tools.
xAPI lets you collect data from multiple systems,
not just your LMS, so you can run metrics
and analysis to quantify the impact of all your
learning tools.
xAPI data, formatted as experience statements,
is collected and stored in a specialized system
called a Learning Record Store, or an LRS.

What is
Experience Data?
Experience data is a combination of activity, learning,
behavior, and performance data.
xAPI is specially designed to collect all kinds of
experience data – including formal and informal
learning, mobile and micro learning, tradtional
assessment, and collaboration.
xAPI data is also granular to a level beyond previous
data standards, collecting data on individual clicks
and interactions, providing a great foundation
