Create a Virtual Field Trip using Google Earth while cultivating the “Five Minds”.
Use the trip creator to find, bookmark and
organize locations you would like to visit,
then add notes for reference…
Just the facts, ma’am…
•Where on the earth are we going?
•What is here that makes this so
important?
•Who built what is here?
•When was it built?

Put the student in another’s shoes and let them design, create and justify…
•Why were these structures built?
•What is unique about their designs?
•Using technology of the time, how
would you design and construct a
similar structure?
Add extra activities and thoughts by
creating bubbles of information, website
links and challenges for the students!

Editor's Notes
Howard Gardner, in his book “Five Minds for the Future”, describes the five levels of thinking that people (not just students) progress through…
Using Google Earth, and creating virtual field trip, each of Gardner’s five minds can be engaged and developed. The first level, Discipline, is focusing on nothing more than facts and figures…Google Earth is a great way to find out facts about places, old and new…
The second level of the mind is Synthesizing, or taking the information gathered in the Disciplined stage, and then extrapolating information and asking “why?”Google earth provides a ground-based, 3-D view of many historical sites and structures, allowing students to see these artifacts in real time. In addition, many other people have uploaded their own pictures to these sites, allowing others to see these structures from a different point of view.
Push students onto a tangent. Make them think and explore. Add notes, links, challenges and extra activities into your field trip through the use of the Google bubbles…
