1. Moving Forward University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and Applied Science School of Dynamic Systems Janak Dave, Janet Dong
2. Vision/Goal Increase meaningful senior capstone projects Sustainable vision, helping needy people (BUV), international and industrial collaboration, etc. 60% of all projects will be sponsored team projects in five years Involve 25% of SDS faculty in these projects Create a new design lab for Fall 2012
3. Where We Are Product development and Senior Capstone sequence courses Systematic Design process Design, analyze, build, and test projects HOQ, QFD, FEA, DFM, DFA, etc. UC moving to semester in Fall 2012 Opportunities for new design lab Opportunities for cooperation with other faculty
4. Learning Outcomes Learning outcomes Understand the impact of innovations/applications of their projects on society and environment globally Using systematic engineering design process to synthesize knowledge from different fields Integrate/incorporate cost/economics in all of the decisions Design/build/test prototype of their projects Learn to recognize importance of testing and validation Solve real world problems Enhance communication skills, such as oral, written, and graphical
5. Activities Weekly meeting with faculty advisor throughout the year Learn/polish software used for their projects Writing weekly reports and two term reports, a design report and comprehensive final project/product report including users manual if applicable Oral presentations to SDS faculty, project judges, and public at large
6. Activities Add hands on activities (TBD) - Help! 911! Make good and bad reports available to students

9. Gaps Identifying 20-25 industrial/organization sponsored team projects every year No credits for advising senior projects in any form (no teaching, scholarship, service credits) However, high personal satisfaction of helping and guiding students to hit the ground running Institutional focus is high level research
10. Where Are We Going? Meet/reduce the gaps Promote these projects across all fields at UC Involve more SDS faculty in these projects Increase administrative support if possible
11. Time Frame/Schedule Develop and deliver new senior capstone sequence by Fall 2012 Develop and deliver new Design lab by Fall 2012 Increase students participation in these projects
12. Needs/Partnerships Identify and secure funding Identify and secure commitment from industrial/community/collaborative institutional partners Identify institutional/international partnership
