Dr. Ksparthasarathy, former Secretary of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, discusses various topics relating to radiation from cell phone towers and mobile phones. In multiple articles on his website, he argues that the risks from cell tower radiation are negligible based on extensive international research not finding adverse health effects. He criticizes misinformation in media reports on this topic and clarifies factual errors in one report on cell tower radiation.
3. Do cell phone towers cause cancer?
His views on the topic:
‘Risks from cell tower/phone radiation are negligible’
Cell tower radiation is incapable of causing cancer as it has a million times less
energy. It cannot make structural changes in cells making them rogue cells
which may multiply uncontrollably to form cancer. There is no scientific
support for other alleged hazards from cell toer/phone radiation.

5. Two central ministers are reportedly afraid of
telecom tower radiation!
His views on the topic:
As per a report, “Intensive International research has not established any
adverse health effect in the short or long term of Radio Frequency radiation
exposure from mobile phones and cell tower antennas”.
If the reported apprehensions of Shri Veerappa Moily and Ms Krishna Tirath
are correct, it is a case of no light under the lighthouse.

7. The Hindustan Times unwittingly scares public
His views on the topic:
The Hindustan Times may not have the scientific resources to sift the corn from the
chaff. But publishing assertive statements based on unscientific reports is not
appropriate; more so when such statements are likely to be taken as Gospel truths
by an unsuspecting public. It is unfortunate that a leading daily such as The
Hindustan Times behaves this way.

9. About Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited
His views on the topic:
NPCIL’s latest report card highlights several records in the safe
operation of nuclear power plants. For instance, ten reactors of the
company have run non-stop for more than one year. Among them, the
Unit-2 of Tarapur Atomic Power Station has run continuously for 590
days, a notable achievement.

11. Report on cell tower radiation contains factual errors,
mis-information and hoaxes
His views on the topic:
A professor of electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of
technology, Bombay wrote a document titled “Report on cell tower
radiation” and submitted it to the Department of Telecommunication
(DOT). Apart from several unsubstantiated comments and wrong
interpretation of concepts, the report contains news stories in a
subsection titled “Epidemiological studies from different countries”.

His views on the topic:
Dr Kari Jokela, member of the International Commission on Ionizing
Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) and research professor at the Radiation
and Nuclear Safety Authority, Finland, in an email message stated that
Dr Girish Kumar’s interpretations of ICNIRP guidelines are incorrect.

15. Hazards of reading the “Report on Cell Tower
Radiation”
His views on the topic:
Professor Girish Kumar’s report was an eye opener to me. I have sent it to few
specialists. Their comments were equally revealing. What is disturbing is that
the report got undeserved credibility as it emerged from IIT Bombay. The
report is a classic example of a biased and unscientific study. The report
needs careful analysis as most of the scary observations on the biological
effects of cell tower/phone radiation uncritically published in some of our
leading news papers emerge from it.
