Essay on Gatsby is Not Really Great
Is Gatsby Really Great?
The first thing you see when you pick up this book is the Title "The Great Gatsby"
So already you expect Gatsby to great before you have even opened the book. As the first chapter
unravels The Narrator and Gatsby's Neighbor Nick Carraway, tells us plainly that he loathes Gatsby,
however by the end of the paragraph he describes Gatsby's character as "gorgeous". He also says
"No Gatsby turned out alright in the end."
From now we begin to wonder about how great Gatsby really is? On one hand he is "vile" because
Carraway tell us he has "Unaffected scorn" for him while on the other hand he is "gorgeous". We
consider Nicks opinions to be very accurate as he is a fair and sensitive person who is also the...show

However as we begin to learn about his corruption, and the way by which he came by this money,
we begin to loose this image of greatness. Even Nick swings form admiration to resentment. When
Gatsby tells Nick about all his great travels and accomplishments around Europe traveling like
royalty and studying at oxford. This Makes Gatsby a hero, however Nick doesn't believe him,
until Montenegro is mentioned, and the same applies to us. This is the point when our faith in
Gatsby's greatness, is reaffirmed. As the book progress and we dig deeper into Gatsby's past. We
begin learning more and more about his life built upon deception, we really start to suspect the
rumors of his under ground involvement in crime, specially after meeting Meyer Wolfsheim. It is
my personal opinion that Wolfsheim, was in fact a Jew, due to his characteristics, "a large nose" "a
diminutive stature". It is an important point to note, due to the fact that during the 1920's, The Jews
were blamed for Americas corruption, due to there infamous greed at that time. So when Gatsby is
seen doing business with people like Wolfsheim, it slanders his name and he, is no longer the
American dream, on the contrary, he is now, one of the people that corrupted America . We begin to
learn his true identity is not Jay Gatsby, but that he is relay a man named James Gatz.
As the story progresses we begin to realize, that Gatsby has

Introduction
Title and author The title is The Great Gatsby and the author is F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Genre The book is a novel.
Historical Context The book was published in 1925, during the Jazz Age. The 1920s were also
referred to as the Roaring Twenties, due to the significant economic boom in the United States
during that era. This era was just after World War I and in the middle of Prohibition, where alcohol
was illegal.
Protagonist Jay Gatsby is the protagonist. As a child he was the son of a rural farmer, dreaming for
a big future. During Nick's time on Long Island he was known for his extravagant parties and
massive wealth. Gatsby lived in a large mansion in the West Egg. Beneath the surface, he makes his
money through shady means, including...show more content...
A dynamic character in the book is Jay Gatsby. He changes greatly in wealth and personality.
When he was a young boy, he constantly tried to improve himself. In fact, he used Benjamin
Franklin's technique of writing down a schedule and a list of ways to better himself. Gatsby did
not want to have the same rural farming life that his parents did. He always dreamed of being
rich, aristocratic, and proper. He estranged himself from his family, and changed his name from
James Gatz to Jay Gatsby. Dan Cody helped him become the man he wanted to be and got him
involved in his yachting business. Gatsby fell in love with a woman named Daisy after going on
a date with her. From this point on, everything he did was for Daisy. He worked very hard to get
the money to purchase a mansion to satisfy Daisy, and was successful in doing so. However,
Gatsby was living in a fantasy world and chasing the past life of being with Daisy was impossible.
In chapter 8, Gatsby acknowledges that he has been chasing the past and how he accidentally fell in
love with Daisy, and for the first time in the novel tells Nick the truth. This indicates Gatsby is not as
enthusiastic about the romantic life as he once was. Overall, though, the main change in Gatsby
comes when he meets Dan Cody, where he transforms from James Gatz into Jay

The Great Gatsby Book Report
Book Written by F. Scott Fitzgerald
This report is based upon the book, The Great Gatsby, written by Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald.
This book is published by Simon & Schuster in 2004, and it is an imprint of Charles Scribner's Sons,
originally published in 1925. It is also considered as one of Francis Fitzgerald's "magnum opus" or
great work.
Introduction Do you appreciate a good mystery? In the Great Gatsby, Francis Fitzgerald gives a
glimpse inside the forestalled love of the infamously wealthy Jay Gatsby and the beautiful Daisy
Buchanan in a period of deteriorated moral and social values. This Jazz Age and Modernist novel
exists as an eye opener in events that still occur at the center of the American culture. It evokes the
world through the emotional outcome of Gatsby's pursuit of his dream towards proving himself and
winning the heart of his one and only love.
Theme The main theme of the novel is the collapse of the American Dream at an age of unknown
affluence. It is one of the habitual matters in the literary world. Cynicism, as portrayed by Fitzgerald
in the novel, is approached not only through the effects of greed and pursuit of happiness, but also
through the sense that it corrupts the major characters of the novel, including a part of the American
culture. This becomes a detrimental cause of the theme due to the characters' motivation for
self–interest. Another theme of the novel is the structure and development of

Summary At the onset of this book, the reader is introduced to the narrator, Nick Carraway, who
relates the past happenings that construct the story of Jay Gatsby and Nick during the summer of
1922. After fighting in World War I, or the Great War as Nick called it, Nick left his prominent
family in the West of America for the North where he intended to learn the bond business. Nick
was originally supposed to share a house in West Egg near New York City with an associate of
his, but the man backed out and so Nick lived with only a Finnish cook. Right next door, Gatsby
lived in a glorious mansion with expansive gardens and a marble swimming pool, among other
luxuries. Yet Nick did not even hear about Gatsby until he went to visit his...show more content...
They met again in New York and took a taxi to the apartment that Tom had purchased for the two
of them. Myrtle called her sister Catherine and the McKees that she and Tom were friends with on
the phone and the six of them sat around in the apartment and got exceptionally drunk once they
arrived. During this time, Nick learned about Tom and Myrtle, as well as the fact that neither of
them could stand their spouse. Nick could hardly remember what had gone on that night at the
apartment and the next thing he knew, he was in Penn Station waiting for the four o' clock train to
go home. Every weekend, Nick's next door neighbor Gatsby had extravagant parties at his house.
One Saturday morning, Gatsby's butler came to Nick's house and invited him to the party that was
to be held that evening. Nick showed up that night, not knowing a soul there, and not even
knowing what the host himself looked like. He soon found Jordan, and spent the rest of the
evening with her. Nick found himself speaking with a man he recognized from the war. Nick told
him that he did not even know who the host was, but that he had just been invited by him. The man
looked puzzled and then told Nick that he was Gatsby. Both were embarrassed and apologized to
each other. At that moment, a butler appeared and told Gatsby of a phone call that he had to attend
to. Gatsby excused himself and said that he would talk to Nick later that

The Great Gatsby
American classics such as The Great Gatsby, have been known to recapture and invoke feelings,
potentially spark feelings towards, but most importantly, give readers a passage into a different time.
Author F. Scott Fitzgerald's main focus was to first captivate an audience of readers. He gave the
readers a sense of the good side, and what it was like to grow up in the 1920's in new work. During
this time period, there were certain people who faired better than others, and there was not much in
between. At this point in America, either money was available or it was not. This caused a rift in the
system, and it continued to balloon, with the poor getting poorer, and the rich, getting richer. With
any great writing, any story, in any case, there is always two sides. At first the...show more content...
The story of Jay Gatsby is no different; at first there are beautiful homes, on the water, as extravagant
as the most brilliant minds could come up with. Through the character Jay Gatsby, we are introduced
to the life style, of flashy lights, fancy cars, immense, immaculate homes, but also in The Great
Gatsby, we learn of a deeper darker side to these seemingly great times. F. Scott Fitzgerald does an
amazing job to remind the reader that, no matter how bright and amazing someone's life, and future
seems, they could be fighting inner demons, or be struggling with things impervious to outsiders.
The main character Jay Gatsby was the kind of person that seemed like he had it made, big house,
nice cars, ravishing parties, but as it turns out, even the ones that seem to have it all, can be lacking
something important. Jay Gatsby as a younger man, before he was drafted into the military, had a
young girlfriend, Daisy. They loved each other more than anyone has

The Great Gatsby Setting Essay
The Great Gatsby is, to this day, one of the most iconic and well–written books. F. Scott Fitzgerald is
the author of this glamorous, ritzy story. The storyline of The Great Gatsby took place in the
1920s of early America. It is primarily about the drama in the lives of some of America's most
wealthy families living in New York. All of which are trying to live and embody everything it
means to achieve the American Dream, much like what many of the U.S. experiences today. The
Great Gatsby is one of the most recognizable books of our time due to its extravagant setting, its
memorable characters, and, of course, its wonderful author. Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (known as

The decaying of moral and social values seen in greed, materialism, and gross excess of the time
period is what led to this degradation of the American Dream. This can be most clearly seen in
the symbols used in the story by Fitzgerald. One of which includes The Valley of the Ashes and
the billboard of the eyes above it. This was meant as a warning from Fitzgerald to show where
America may end up if it keeps up all this. The eyes of TJ Eckleburg were meant to portray the
eyes of god (Williams 1). They were always watching and always reminding us to remember what's
important. It is clear that the author really just wanted to show that going after one's dream is a
great thing, but he reminds the reader not to lose who they really are in the

Book Report Great Gatsby
The name of the book that this report describes is The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This
story takes place in New York City in the summer of 1922. This time period is often referred to as
"The Roaring Twenties," which was the good time in the United States before the crash of the stock
market in 1929.
The story begins with the move of Nick Carraway from the Midwest to West Egg in the district of
Long Island, New York during the summer of 1922. Nick's point of view is used for the duration
of the story, as he is the main character. West Egg is described as a very wealthy area full of people
who made lots of money very quickly and love to show it off. These people also haven't been rich
long enough to make any social connections, unlike Nick, who has connections in East Egg, where
the more settled rich live. Nick is also not as upscale as his neighbors in West Egg.

Then, Gatsby tells Nick that it was Daisy who was driving his car and hit Myrtle, but Gatsby
intends to take the blame. George Wilson, Myrtle's husband, somehow jumps to the conclusion that
whoever killed his wife was her lover. After discovering the owner of the car involved in the deadly
accident, he sets out to get his revenge.
Nick stops by Gatsby's mansion after work the afternoon after the accident to find that George
Wilson had shot Gatsby and, afterwards, shot himself. Soon after this event, Nick composes a
funeral for Gatsby, parts ways with Jordan Baker, and moves back to the Midwest because of how
revolted he is with New York and the wealthy.
I would recommend this book because of how exceptional the story is. However, I am not enthused
how F. Scott Fitzgerald chose to write it because of the lengthy sentences and words that were
beyond my vocabulary(I had to look up the definition of many words in this book). Overall, I can see
why this book is such a

How To Write A Book Report On The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in April 1924. The book started off talking
about the narrator of the story, Nick Carraway. The setting took place in the early 1920's in a
make believe town of West Egg and East Egg. (www.shmoop.com/greatgatsby) Nick was happy
with the money he had. Gatsby was not happy without Daisy even with all his money. The theme
of the book was money cannot buy happiness. Happiness is love, friends, and family, not money.
Money cannot buy love. For example, Gatsby offered Tom a lot of money to get Daisy. Tom
refused Gatsby's offer. Mr. Wilson had money and can't get Myrtle not to cheat on him. Tom had a
good little bit of money and was not happy with Daisy. Daisy was also not happy with Tom. Money

The Lower Classes don't live in big fancy mansions and drive expensive cars. They don't take
vacations in other countries and have the butlers and maids to cook and clean for them the rich
do. The Lower Classes work hard in industrial jobs and office jobs to make a living. For this, The
Upper Class looks down on them. The author wrote the story to show how the rich played with
their toys and had parties, while most of the others in the lower classes work their whole life. He
did not want it to be like this, it's just what life was and life isn't fair for all. Take this for example,
Tom had a mistress, Myrtle, who was from the lower class. Tom treated her any kind of way. He
abused her. He figured since that he was rich he could treat her any kind of way and it would be
ok. This is just the way the rich treated the poor. This was Society.
In conclusion, The class and society of The Story of Gatsby was the rich stuck with the rich and
downgraded the poor and society was corrupt with the rich people who made it so much harder for
the poor. I believe that the author made the story this way to show the audience the ways society
was messed up and full of rich people who made it that way. Fitzgerald was making an example of
something though. Maybe the way he viewed society and

The Great Gatsby
By: F. Scott Fitzgerald
The novel is set in the twenties, following World War I. The economy is booming, which is crucial
for the ability to convey the themes of the American Dream and post–war moods. Set in New York
City, the book opens in the West Egg, a new money part of the upper class neighborhoods.
The novel is told in first person by Nick Carraway, cousin of the female protagonist, Daisy
Buchanan. This dynamic presents a closeness to the protagonist, and provides the reader full
understandings of the messages told. By creating a neutral character who is more or less functional
in the plot development, the reader gains a knowledge of the characteristics the protagonists, Jay and
Daisy, truly have. Their manipulative...show more content...
Nick attended Yale and was involved in the Great War. However, Nick becomes restless and moves

Jay Gatsby is the protagonist of The Great Gatsby. Like many others in the novel Gatsby is a
young, very wealthy man. Nick Carraway neighbors Gatsby and his large mysterious mansion
famous for his shindigs. Even though many people attend his parties, nobody really knows who he
is or his story. Throughout the novel we learn that Gatsby was born in a rural town in North Dakota.
He was not rich then, but he gained his fortune throughout the years by committing criminal
activities. In the beginning of the novel Nick looks at Gatsby as a faulty man, but he later then sees
that he works hard to get to where he wants to be reaching for the green light.
The colors gold and yellow carry symbolism for wealth in the Great Gatsby. Even though the two
colors represent wealth, they both are a little different. Gold represents richer or more lavish things,
whereas yellow represents newer wealth or not as valuable. Yellow is used many times in the novel
to describe certain objects. For example, many structures are described in yellow like the building on
the edge of the valley of ashes or some window panes. Also, during one of Gatsby's parties, the
music is described as yellow cocktail music, Gatsby's car is also yellow. Gold is used to describe
people like Jordan Baker who is not as rich as many characters like

One of America's utmost renowned books happens to be The Great Gatsby, generally read by high
school and college students, then again commonly misunderstood. This book subsisted during the
Prohibition era which influenced Fitzgerald significantly in his writing. What numerous people fail
to realize is the meaning that the book entails in addition to its resemblance to the author. The Great
Gatsby exists as an extremely real and historical book that grasps the reader's attention and
transports them to an incredibly real place amongst Fitzgerald's personal life, which society survives

Identical to that of Jay Gatsby, he attended Oxford, a recognized academic school. In addition,
Gatsby "only stayed five months. That's why [he] can't really call [himself] an Oxford man"
(Fitzgerald 129) which closely parallels Scott's experience with Princeton, considering he never
graduated. During Fitzgerald's time at Princeton he formed a romantic interest with a woman named
Ginevra King. This woman can be described as being a beautiful, young debutant which Scott
escorted to sundry amounts of parties and football games. One evening Scott was in Ginevra's
hometown and overheard someone state that "poor boys shouldn't think of marrying rich girls"
(Baughman and Bruccoli 17). She seemed to share the same opinion because by late 1916 Ginevra
chose to pursue the attentions of wealthier young men. He attended Princeton in 1913, nonetheless
by November 1917 he enlisted in the army and left the scholarly institution. From these details of
Fitzgerald's life, it is safe for one to assume that he is portraying himself as Gatsby trying to steal
away Daisy's heart, or in Fitzgerald's circumstance,

Gatsby's extravagant outbursts can be explained by his desire for Daisy. They were in love when
they were younger but he was too poor and lacked the pedigree to marry her; he did not meet the
standards set by her parents and, evidently, by herself. Gatsby began a course of action to regain
her love and shape himself into the man she wanted. He devised a plan, which made him wealthy
and successfully win over Daisy but also put him into a conflict with society because his actions
were illegal. Daisy also had some conflicts of her own. Her husband Tom was having an affair
with Myrtle Wilson. Daisy decided in order to stop the affair, she had to run over and kill Myrtle

his wife. The pain and heartache that George experienced caused him to take revenge on the man he

Essay On Nick Gatsby
In the article "The Trouble with Nick: Reading Gatsby Closely," Scott Donaldson argues that
"Nick Carraway is a snob" (98). Donaldson cites Carraway's intolerance toward those who do not
know how to act, Carraway's conflicting feelings about Gatsby, and Carraway's obsession with
social propriety as manifestations of his snobbery. According to Donaldson, a final revelation of
Carraway's aloof attitude is his static personality, a personality that refuses to learn from the
experiences of others. However, Scott Donaldson's argument is incorrect; Nick Carraway is not a
snob. In F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, Nick Carraway is an unpretentious man who

Donaldson argues that by insisting on having been invited to Gatsby's party and in attempting to
thank Gatsby for inviting him to a party, Carraway "appears rather ridiculous" and is overly
formal and pretentious (101). Donaldson explains that Carraway's obsession with social rules
reveals his snobbery. Once again, Donaldson is incorrect; Carraway's actions are signs of respect,
not of ridiculous pretentiousness. Carraway does not attend one of Gatsby's parties until Gatsby
formally invites him. Waiting to attend a party is a sign of respect, not aloofness. By waiting for a
formal invitation to attend Gatsby's party, Carraway reveals his respect for Gatsby's privacy and
home. Additionally, Carraway spends the majority of his first party attempting to find Gatsby and
thank him for his hospitality. Again, Carraway's actions are polite and demonstrate respect for
Gatsby. Instead of rudely ignoring his host as so many of his fellow guests do, Carraway attempts
to politely thank Gatsby for his hospitality, illustrating his respect for Gatsby. Hence, Nick Carraway
exhibits reasonable social decorum and exemplifies respect, not arrogance, in his interactions with

The Great Gatsby is filled with many characters who live hopelessly, lonely lives, and without

Descriptive Essay On The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby, by Francis Scott Fitzgerald is an amazing novel that thank god it was turn into
a movie. It is probably one of my favorite movies of all time. Probably because it starts one of my
favorites actors of all time like the great Leonardo DiCaprio. Being that this novel is so well
known, so there is going to be many opinions about it. There is an extra of material that has been
written on The Great Gatsby. To me one of the most interesting aspect that The Great Gatsby brings
is the setting, which is during the 1920's, and how this movie represents the life of the great
Fitzgerald during this same time period. "In the 1920's and 1930s F. Scott Fitzgerald was equally
famous as a writer and as a celebrity author whose lifestyle seemed to symbolize the two decades"
(Fitzgerald, p. 2147). The movie is narrated by Nick Carraway, who moved to New York from the
mid–west. Nick moved to West Egg, which is a place where rich people lived. He bought a small
house next to none other than Jay Gatsby mansion. Nick is later invited by Gatsby itself to one of
his parties, where Gatsby tells Nick that him and Daisy were in love while Gatsby was in the war.

HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH YOUR CLOTHES
AND MAKE SURE THEY STAND OUT ONLINE

The Great Gatsby Book Report Essay

  • 1. Essay on Gatsby is Not Really Great Is Gatsby Really Great? The first thing you see when you pick up this book is the Title "The Great Gatsby" So already you expect Gatsby to great before you have even opened the book. As the first chapter unravels The Narrator and Gatsby's Neighbor Nick Carraway, tells us plainly that he loathes Gatsby, however by the end of the paragraph he describes Gatsby's character as "gorgeous". He also says "No Gatsby turned out alright in the end." From now we begin to wonder about how great Gatsby really is? On one hand he is "vile" because Carraway tell us he has "Unaffected scorn" for him while on the other hand he is "gorgeous". We consider Nicks opinions to be very accurate as he is a fair and sensitive person who is also the...show more content... However as we begin to learn about his corruption, and the way by which he came by this money, we begin to loose this image of greatness. Even Nick swings form admiration to resentment. When Gatsby tells Nick about all his great travels and accomplishments around Europe traveling like royalty and studying at oxford. This Makes Gatsby a hero, however Nick doesn't believe him, until Montenegro is mentioned, and the same applies to us. This is the point when our faith in Gatsby's greatness, is reaffirmed. As the book progress and we dig deeper into Gatsby's past. We begin learning more and more about his life built upon deception, we really start to suspect the rumors of his under ground involvement in crime, specially after meeting Meyer Wolfsheim. It is my personal opinion that Wolfsheim, was in fact a Jew, due to his characteristics, "a large nose" "a diminutive stature". It is an important point to note, due to the fact that during the 1920's, The Jews were blamed for Americas corruption, due to there infamous greed at that time. So when Gatsby is seen doing business with people like Wolfsheim, it slanders his name and he, is no longer the American dream, on the contrary, he is now, one of the people that corrupted America . We begin to learn his true identity is not Jay Gatsby, but that he is relay a man named James Gatz. As the story progresses we begin to realize, that Gatsby has Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 3. Book Report Great Gatsby Introduction Title and author The title is The Great Gatsby and the author is F. Scott Fitzgerald. Genre The book is a novel. Historical Context The book was published in 1925, during the Jazz Age. The 1920s were also referred to as the Roaring Twenties, due to the significant economic boom in the United States during that era. This era was just after World War I and in the middle of Prohibition, where alcohol was illegal. Protagonist Jay Gatsby is the protagonist. As a child he was the son of a rural farmer, dreaming for a big future. During Nick's time on Long Island he was known for his extravagant parties and massive wealth. Gatsby lived in a large mansion in the West Egg. Beneath the surface, he makes his money through shady means, including...show more content... A dynamic character in the book is Jay Gatsby. He changes greatly in wealth and personality. When he was a young boy, he constantly tried to improve himself. In fact, he used Benjamin Franklin's technique of writing down a schedule and a list of ways to better himself. Gatsby did not want to have the same rural farming life that his parents did. He always dreamed of being rich, aristocratic, and proper. He estranged himself from his family, and changed his name from James Gatz to Jay Gatsby. Dan Cody helped him become the man he wanted to be and got him involved in his yachting business. Gatsby fell in love with a woman named Daisy after going on a date with her. From this point on, everything he did was for Daisy. He worked very hard to get the money to purchase a mansion to satisfy Daisy, and was successful in doing so. However, Gatsby was living in a fantasy world and chasing the past life of being with Daisy was impossible. In chapter 8, Gatsby acknowledges that he has been chasing the past and how he accidentally fell in love with Daisy, and for the first time in the novel tells Nick the truth. This indicates Gatsby is not as enthusiastic about the romantic life as he once was. Overall, though, the main change in Gatsby comes when he meets Dan Cody, where he transforms from James Gatz into Jay Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald Book Report The Great Gatsby Book Report Book Written by F. Scott Fitzgerald This report is based upon the book, The Great Gatsby, written by Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald. This book is published by Simon & Schuster in 2004, and it is an imprint of Charles Scribner's Sons, originally published in 1925. It is also considered as one of Francis Fitzgerald's "magnum opus" or great work. Introduction Do you appreciate a good mystery? In the Great Gatsby, Francis Fitzgerald gives a glimpse inside the forestalled love of the infamously wealthy Jay Gatsby and the beautiful Daisy Buchanan in a period of deteriorated moral and social values. This Jazz Age and Modernist novel exists as an eye opener in events that still occur at the center of the American culture. It evokes the world through the emotional outcome of Gatsby's pursuit of his dream towards proving himself and winning the heart of his one and only love. Theme The main theme of the novel is the collapse of the American Dream at an age of unknown affluence. It is one of the habitual matters in the literary world. Cynicism, as portrayed by Fitzgerald in the novel, is approached not only through the effects of greed and pursuit of happiness, but also through the sense that it corrupts the major characters of the novel, including a part of the American culture. This becomes a detrimental cause of the theme due to the characters' motivation for self–interest. Another theme of the novel is the structure and development of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. The Great Gatsby Book Report Essay Summary At the onset of this book, the reader is introduced to the narrator, Nick Carraway, who relates the past happenings that construct the story of Jay Gatsby and Nick during the summer of 1922. After fighting in World War I, or the Great War as Nick called it, Nick left his prominent family in the West of America for the North where he intended to learn the bond business. Nick was originally supposed to share a house in West Egg near New York City with an associate of his, but the man backed out and so Nick lived with only a Finnish cook. Right next door, Gatsby lived in a glorious mansion with expansive gardens and a marble swimming pool, among other luxuries. Yet Nick did not even hear about Gatsby until he went to visit his...show more content... They met again in New York and took a taxi to the apartment that Tom had purchased for the two of them. Myrtle called her sister Catherine and the McKees that she and Tom were friends with on the phone and the six of them sat around in the apartment and got exceptionally drunk once they arrived. During this time, Nick learned about Tom and Myrtle, as well as the fact that neither of them could stand their spouse. Nick could hardly remember what had gone on that night at the apartment and the next thing he knew, he was in Penn Station waiting for the four o' clock train to go home. Every weekend, Nick's next door neighbor Gatsby had extravagant parties at his house. One Saturday morning, Gatsby's butler came to Nick's house and invited him to the party that was to be held that evening. Nick showed up that night, not knowing a soul there, and not even knowing what the host himself looked like. He soon found Jordan, and spent the rest of the evening with her. Nick found himself speaking with a man he recognized from the war. Nick told him that he did not even know who the host was, but that he had just been invited by him. The man looked puzzled and then told Nick that he was Gatsby. Both were embarrassed and apologized to each other. At that moment, a butler appeared and told Gatsby of a phone call that he had to attend to. Gatsby excused himself and said that he would talk to Nick later that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. How To Write A Book Report On The Great Gatsby Noah Hederman Hemer 3rd The Great Gatsby 4/5/17 The Great Gatsby American classics such as The Great Gatsby, have been known to recapture and invoke feelings, potentially spark feelings towards, but most importantly, give readers a passage into a different time. Author F. Scott Fitzgerald's main focus was to first captivate an audience of readers. He gave the readers a sense of the good side, and what it was like to grow up in the 1920's in new work. During this time period, there were certain people who faired better than others, and there was not much in between. At this point in America, either money was available or it was not. This caused a rift in the system, and it continued to balloon, with the poor getting poorer, and the rich, getting richer. With any great writing, any story, in any case, there is always two sides. At first the...show more content... The story of Jay Gatsby is no different; at first there are beautiful homes, on the water, as extravagant as the most brilliant minds could come up with. Through the character Jay Gatsby, we are introduced to the life style, of flashy lights, fancy cars, immense, immaculate homes, but also in The Great Gatsby, we learn of a deeper darker side to these seemingly great times. F. Scott Fitzgerald does an amazing job to remind the reader that, no matter how bright and amazing someone's life, and future seems, they could be fighting inner demons, or be struggling with things impervious to outsiders. The main character Jay Gatsby was the kind of person that seemed like he had it made, big house, nice cars, ravishing parties, but as it turns out, even the ones that seem to have it all, can be lacking something important. Jay Gatsby as a younger man, before he was drafted into the military, had a young girlfriend, Daisy. They loved each other more than anyone has Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. The Great Gatsby Setting Essay The Great Gatsby is, to this day, one of the most iconic and well–written books. F. Scott Fitzgerald is the author of this glamorous, ritzy story. The storyline of The Great Gatsby took place in the 1920s of early America. It is primarily about the drama in the lives of some of America's most wealthy families living in New York. All of which are trying to live and embody everything it means to achieve the American Dream, much like what many of the U.S. experiences today. The Great Gatsby is one of the most recognizable books of our time due to its extravagant setting, its memorable characters, and, of course, its wonderful author. The decaying of moral and social values seen in greed, materialism, and gross excess of the time period is what led to this degradation of the American Dream. This can be most clearly seen in the symbols used in the story by Fitzgerald. One of which includes The Valley of the Ashes and the billboard of the eyes above it. This was meant as a warning from Fitzgerald to show where America may end up if it keeps up all this. The eyes of TJ Eckleburg were meant to portray the eyes of god (Williams 1). They were always watching and always reminding us to remember what's important. It is clear that the author really just wanted to show that going after one's dream is a great thing, but he reminds the reader not to lose who they really are in the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Book Report Great Gatsby The name of the book that this report describes is The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This story takes place in New York City in the summer of 1922. This time period is often referred to as "The Roaring Twenties," which was the good time in the United States before the crash of the stock market in 1929. The story begins with the move of Nick Carraway from the Midwest to West Egg in the district of Long Island, New York during the summer of 1922. Nick's point of view is used for the duration of the story, as he is the main character. West Egg is described as a very wealthy area full of people who made lots of money very quickly and love to show it off. These people also haven't been rich long enough to make any social connections, unlike Nick, who has connections in East Egg, where the more settled rich live. Nick is also not as upscale as his neighbors in West Egg. The...show more content... Then, Gatsby tells Nick that it was Daisy who was driving his car and hit Myrtle, but Gatsby intends to take the blame. George Wilson, Myrtle's husband, somehow jumps to the conclusion that whoever killed his wife was her lover. After discovering the owner of the car involved in the deadly accident, he sets out to get his revenge. Nick stops by Gatsby's mansion after work the afternoon after the accident to find that George Wilson had shot Gatsby and, afterwards, shot himself. Soon after this event, Nick composes a funeral for Gatsby, parts ways with Jordan Baker, and moves back to the Midwest because of how revolted he is with New York and the wealthy. I would recommend this book because of how exceptional the story is. However, I am not enthused how F. Scott Fitzgerald chose to write it because of the lengthy sentences and words that were beyond my vocabulary(I had to look up the definition of many words in this book). The setting took place in the early 1920's in a make believe town of West Egg and East Egg. (www.shmoop.com/greatgatsby) Nick was happy with the money he had. Gatsby was not happy without Daisy even with all his money. The theme of the book was money cannot buy happiness. Happiness is love, friends, and family, not money. Money cannot buy love. For example, Gatsby offered Tom a lot of money to get Daisy. Tom refused Gatsby's offer. Mr. Wilson had money and can't get Myrtle not to cheat on him. They don't take vacations in other countries and have the butlers and maids to cook and clean for them the rich do. The Lower Classes work hard in industrial jobs and office jobs to make a living. For this, The Upper Class looks down on them. The author wrote the story to show how the rich played with their toys and had parties, while most of the others in the lower classes work their whole life. He did not want it to be like this, it's just what life was and life isn't fair for all. Take this for example, Tom had a mistress, Myrtle, who was from the lower class. Tom treated her any kind of way. He abused her. He figured since that he was rich he could treat her any kind of way and it would be ok. This is just the way the rich treated the poor. This was Society. In conclusion, The class and society of The Story of Gatsby was the rich stuck with the rich and downgraded the poor and society was corrupt with the rich people who made it so much harder for the poor. • 11. The Great Gatsby Character Analysis Essay The Great Gatsby By: F. Scott Fitzgerald The novel is set in the twenties, following World War I. The economy is booming, which is crucial for the ability to convey the themes of the American Dream and post–war moods. Set in New York City, the book opens in the West Egg, a new money part of the upper class neighborhoods. The novel is told in first person by Nick Carraway, cousin of the female protagonist, Daisy Buchanan. This dynamic presents a closeness to the protagonist, and provides the reader full understandings of the messages told. By creating a neutral character who is more or less functional in the plot development, the reader gains a knowledge of the characteristics the protagonists, Jay and Daisy, truly have. Throughout the novel we learn that Gatsby was born in a rural town in North Dakota. He was not rich then, but he gained his fortune throughout the years by committing criminal activities. In the beginning of the novel Nick looks at Gatsby as a faulty man, but he later then sees that he works hard to get to where he wants to be reaching for the green light. The colors gold and yellow carry symbolism for wealth in the Great Gatsby. Even though the two colors represent wealth, they both are a little different. Gold represents richer or more lavish things, whereas yellow represents newer wealth or not as valuable. Yellow is used many times in the novel to describe certain objects. For example, many structures are described in yellow like the building on the edge of the valley of ashes or some window panes. Also, during one of Gatsby's parties, the music is described as yellow cocktail music, Gatsby's car is also yellow. This book subsisted during the Prohibition era which influenced Fitzgerald significantly in his writing. What numerous people fail to realize is the meaning that the book entails in addition to its resemblance to the author. The Great Gatsby exists as an extremely real and historical book that grasps the reader's attention and transports them to an incredibly real place amongst Fitzgerald's personal life, which society survives unknowledgeable of and deserves to reread and gain an enhanced understanding. In addition, Gatsby "only stayed five months. That's why [he] can't really call [himself] an Oxford man" (Fitzgerald 129) which closely parallels Scott's experience with Princeton, considering he never graduated. During Fitzgerald's time at Princeton he formed a romantic interest with a woman named Ginevra King. This woman can be described as being a beautiful, young debutant which Scott escorted to sundry amounts of parties and football games. One evening Scott was in Ginevra's hometown and overheard someone state that "poor boys shouldn't think of marrying rich girls" (Baughman and Bruccoli 17). She seemed to share the same opinion because by late 1916 Ginevra chose to pursue the attentions of wealthier young men. He attended Princeton in 1913, nonetheless by November 1917 he enlisted in the army and left the scholarly institution. Gatsby's extravagant outbursts can be explained by his desire for Daisy. They were in love when they were younger but he was too poor and lacked the pedigree to marry her; he did not meet the standards set by her parents and, evidently, by herself. • 14. Essay On Nick Gatsby In the article "The Trouble with Nick: Reading Gatsby Closely," Scott Donaldson argues that "Nick Carraway is a snob" (98). Donaldson cites Carraway's intolerance toward those who do not know how to act, Carraway's conflicting feelings about Gatsby, and Carraway's obsession with social propriety as manifestations of his snobbery. According to Donaldson, a final revelation of Carraway's aloof attitude is his static personality, a personality that refuses to learn from the experiences of others. However, Scott Donaldson's argument is incorrect; Nick Carraway is not a snob. In F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, Nick Carraway is an unpretentious man who exemplifies tolerance and respect and learns from his experiences. Nick Carraway exhibits...show more content... Donaldson argues that by insisting on having been invited to Gatsby's party and in attempting to thank Gatsby for inviting him to a party, Carraway "appears rather ridiculous" and is overly formal and pretentious (101). Donaldson explains that Carraway's obsession with social rules reveals his snobbery. Once again, Donaldson is incorrect; Carraway's actions are signs of respect, not of ridiculous pretentiousness. Carraway does not attend one of Gatsby's parties until Gatsby formally invites him. Waiting to attend a party is a sign of respect, not aloofness. By waiting for a formal invitation to attend Gatsby's party, Carraway reveals his respect for Gatsby's privacy and home. Additionally, Carraway spends the majority of his first party attempting to find Gatsby and thank him for his hospitality. Again, Carraway's actions are polite and demonstrate respect for Gatsby. Instead of rudely ignoring his host as so many of his fellow guests do, Carraway attempts to politely thank Gatsby for his hospitality, illustrating his respect for Gatsby. Hence, Nick Carraway exhibits reasonable social decorum and exemplifies respect, not arrogance, in his interactions with Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 18. Descriptive Essay On The Great Gatsby The Great Gatsby, by Francis Scott Fitzgerald is an amazing novel that thank god it was turn into a movie. It is probably one of my favorite movies of all time. Probably because it starts one of my favorites actors of all time like the great Leonardo DiCaprio. Being that this novel is so well known, so there is going to be many opinions about it. There is an extra of material that has been written on The Great Gatsby. To me one of the most interesting aspect that The Great Gatsby brings is the setting, which is during the 1920's, and how this movie represents the life of the great Fitzgerald during this same time period. "In the 1920's and 1930s F. Scott Fitzgerald was equally famous as a writer and as a celebrity author whose lifestyle seemed to symbolize the two decades" (Fitzgerald, p. 2147). The movie is narrated by Nick Carraway, who moved to New York from the mid–west. Nick moved to West Egg, which is a place where rich people lived. He bought a small house next to none other than Jay Gatsby mansion. Nick is later invited by Gatsby itself to one of his parties, where Gatsby tells Nick that him and Daisy were in love while Gatsby was in the war. Later Nick arranged a meeting between Gatsby and Daisy, who turned out to be Nick's cousin. Daisy's husband, Tom get suspicious of daisy's affair with Gatsby. Because of this, Tom arranged a meeting to confront Gatsby in a hotel room. On the way back from this confrontation, Gatsby and Daisy get into an accident killing Myrtle Get more content on HelpWriting.net
