4. Denver Veterans Affair Medical Center
The new replacement hospital on the former Fitzsimons Army Medical Campus
in Aurora, being built by the Department of Veterans Affairs, encompasses 1.1
million square feet and consists of 9 buildings, 3 parking garages and a center
concourse that connects the buildings. Total site area contains 33 acres for the
project. 22 acres of the project are structures and pavements, while the
remaining 11 acres are softscape aiding in the absorption of storm runoff from
roofs and pavement. An acre of extensive green roof serves as the first flush
for the water quality of the project.
Landscaping has been designed to take advantage of the native foliage of
Colorado. Not only do these plants generally require less irrigation, fertilizer Storm Runoff Diagram
and care than other non-native selections, but they remind us all of the beauty
of the outdoors around us. Drip irrigation systems will be used and may use
non-potable water to reduce potable water use. Perennial and native grass
plantings will provide a beautiful landscaping backdrop throughout the year
but require little maintenance after the first few years. Natural Colorado stone
is being used where possible to provide fencing and security barriers.

14. Childrens Hospital Colorado East Wing Addition
With the expansion of the existing Childrens Hospital came the need
for the new addition to included a separate drop-off for the new
maternal fetal medicine center, improved staff entrance,
rehabilitation playground, horticulture therapy area, and the study
for relocation of the Garden of Hope.
Curvilinear walkways and native grass plantings unite the new
landscape to the existing. A protected area adjacent to the
playground provides a place for therapist to engage patients in
various activities such as; planting, weeding, watering, plant
identification, and harvesting. This horticulture therapy area
includes a gently sloping wall to provide seating for children of all
ages, while a raised central circular planter allows for accessible
gardening. The adjacent enclosed play area is designed for
flexibility and use by various programs with children of all ages.
Traditional play equipment is accented with whimsical climbing
sculptures and colorfully designed safety surfacing thus providing an
inviting, playful and social space.

16. Exempla Lutheran Medical Center North
Pavilion
The North Pavilion project at Exempla Lutheran Medical
Center introduces a new 275,000 SF multi-story
building addition to the northeast portion of the
existing hospital. Much of the original 1934 hospital
was demolished for this new addition. As part of the
demolition many of the original terra cotta architectural
pieces on the building were saved and introduced into
the new architecture and the surrounding landscape.
Extensive site work was completed to complement the
new pavilion and original campus. A new entry drive,
arrival plaza and clock tower, entry courtyard and
multiple garden spaces present a village feeling to this
part of the campus while recognizing the historical
legacy of the original structures on the site.
The garden spaces offer a pleasant and inviting space
for all to view, enjoy and interact with as part of their
healing or respite process. These gardens are situated
so they can be easily accessed and viewed from many
of the interior spaces of the hospital. Ornamental
plantings in these gardens are arranged to reflect the
existing natural surroundings of the site while
respecting the history of the existing campus. The
introduction of antique terra cotta into the gardens
added a nostalgic touch.
Great care and thought went into incorporating these
antique terra cotta pieces from the original hospital into
the site. Site wall pilasters and planters suited best for
these pieces to help reflect the medical campus legacy.
These elements help soften and enhance the
architecture while creating “garden rooms” where users
have the freedom and control to interact with the
seasonal plantings that provide them with a temporary
escape from their interior environment.

20. Mike Utley Terrain Park
The Mike Utley Terrain Park at Craig Hospital was designed to
promote positive health outcomes for individuals recovering
from spinal cord or traumatic brain injuries. The Park is an
exterior training facility and was originally an idea suggested
by one of the Hospital's physical therapists. The design intent
was to provide a safe training facility in close proximity to the
hospital where physical therapists could work with their
patients, navigating challenging elements they will encounter
in everyday life.
Required training elements were strategically placed in the
park. Beginners are able to maneuver with relative ease then
graduate to more challenging features. As with any project,
budget was a major factor. H+L's team identified a design
that would work within the budget parameters. Craig
Hospital's Foundation realized the importance of this project
and began a whirlwind fundraising effort. The major donor for
the park was The Mike Utley Foundation, contributing over
75% of the needed funds. The remaining funds came from
additional donors and a donor paver program.

22. Longmont United Hospital ED Addition and
“Garden of Peace”
Several outdoor spaces were created as part of the new
emergency addition to Longmont United Hospital. The “Garden
of Peace” resulted from a 40 foot space separation requirement
between the existing hospital and the new ED. This connection
links the existing hospital wing to the main public pavilion and
serves as a shortcut between the buildings. The courtyard
mimics a mountain forest to evoke a sense of tranquility and
spirituality. The serpentine walkway weaves users through a
dense grove of Aspen trees and ground plantings dotted with
accent boulders to their destination. Small seating spaces along
the walkway aligned with specially selected site furniture invite
users to slowdown, relax and enjoy the intimate outdoor
setting. This space has developed into a valuable outdoor
amenity accessible to all.

23. Indian Peaks Medical Center Master
Plan & Urgent Care Center Indian Peaks Medical Center Master Plan
An 65 acre greenfield site in the town of Frederick,
Colorado was chosen for Longmont United to expand
their services in an underserved area. The existing site
has been a farmstead from multiple generations.
Agricultural fields of alfalfa and corn dominate the
landscape. Under the surface of the site numerous
mine shafts, fractures and subsidence areas were
identified, so careful attention was taken when
developing the master plan for the new facilities and
future expansion. Additional Gas wells and irrigation
ditches transverse the site leaving limited area for the
medical centers development.
The master plan for the future medical center included
a full hospital with ED services and MOB’s. The first
phase of the project is a 36,000 square foot Urgent
Care Center.
Site design concepts for the Center are to minimize the
disturbance of the existing agriculture crops so they
can still be farmed with this development and each
additional expansion of the medical center. Great effort
has been to design and control storm runoff from each
phased development and return it back to the
agriculture lands and adjacent ditches. Ideas of porous
pavement parking stalls and bio-swales/infiltration
planters are part of the master drainage and storm
runoff control plan.
Native high plain plantings and local materials have
been specified to keep the Center and future
development phases in tune with the surrounding
agriculture landscape.

25. St. Joseph’s Medical Pavilion Entry Plaza
This plaza offers a place of respite and solitude for
visitors, staff and the neighboring community of St.
Joseph’s Hospital. The plaza’s layout is fashioned after
the previous park space and pedestrian movements that
once occupied the corner of the site. The design offers
multiple access points into the plaza and embraces the
cross axial pedestrian movement from the hospital to
adjacent retail services. A variety of seating elements
offer individuals and small groups a secure feeling of
comfort within this modest space. Three raised concrete
planter seat walls were put in place to buffer adjacent
street activities from the plaza space. Masses of
perennials and grasses provide an understory screen
while above, Honeylocust trees offer dappled shade to
the plaza.

27. Anschutz Health and Wellness Center
The AHWC is a unique and exciting addition on the
University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus that
will serve the existing centers for Human Nutrition,
Integrative Medicine, and Women’s Health Research
programs. It is designed to empower individuals to
strive for health-conscious lives, promote healthier
communities, and target pressing health issues such as
disease prevention.
As proven by many research studies, a connection to
the landscape has many health benefits. Therefor the
landscape design strives for an inside-outside
connection promoting a healthy lifestyle. The
relationship with the landscape starts with the
extension of the bistro into an exterior patio. South of
the bistro patio is a garden with plenty of seating
opportunities. The linear design of the garden planting
reflects the agrarian culture and connection of food and
landscape. The selected plant species appeal to all
senses including taste. Perennial herbs inside the
garden are aesthetically pleasing and can be used in
the demonstration kitchen. The connection to the
outdoors continues on the upper levels with the
inception of an accessible green roof. Panoramic views
make this space the ideal for fundraisers and special
events. Again the connection to a healthy lifestyle is
made with planting space to grow organic produce for Courtesy of Cannon Design
the bistro. Special accommodations have been made
to allow for a future greenhouse addition.
