Presentation on a participatory budgeting pilot based within a day centre for older people. The pilot prepared the older people for moving onto a personal budget and gathered valuable insight into how pooling personal budgets could work.
Jo is in her early 80s and lives near the seaside in Norfolk. Due to her support needs, Jo rarely gets the chance to enjoy the seaside. Like many service users, the highlight of Jo’s week is attending a Day Centre in Kings Lynn. Here she gets to catch-up with friends and take part in lots of different activities such as baking, Bingo and arts and crafts. Jo will soon move onto a personal budget, which will allow her to appoint a personal assistant to help her to visit the seaside and to do lots of other things that she enjoys. However, what Jo really wants to do, is to enjoy these visits and activities with her friends, many of whom attend the Day Centre.
We are currently exploring how the needs of people like Jo can be met. HACT – Housing Action Charitable Trust exploring different models of collective purchasing or pooling.
