Magazine of Inspiration
My masthead will be very
similar to the way that XXL have
laid there's out. As I want to
keep it as close to my magazine
of inspiration as possible, as this
is the magazine that I want mine
to look like.
The main image will be in the
middle of the front cover as it is
the main focus of the magazine.
I want my artist to be in the
centre of the page because it
also allows me to put stuff
behind it.
I want my cover stories to
be on either side of the
main image. This then
allows the other space
where I will put my cover
stories so the reader can
also see that there are
other stories in the
magazine.
The main headline is where
they have put the main story in
the biggest text as it is what is
focused on in this magazine
copy. I want my main headline
to be in this format because it
shows the main focus of the
magazine.
The barcode has the date, issue
and price on it.
15-24 years old as I feel
that this age range are
still involved with this
type of music and will
enjoy the magazine a lot.
I’m basing my magazine
around the magazine of
inspiration which is XXL
and this is because I want
to have a similar target
audience because its my
magazine of inspiration
and I want to relate it to
their magazine.
• Cost of Magazine:
£3.50
Black, grey and red are my colours of
choice for my magazine. The colour
scheme that I have chosen depicts to
the reader that it is urgent that they
read this magazine.

I like all three of these names as I
feel they are very catchy and will
catch the eye of the target
audience.

Mixer connotes that there is
going to be a “mix” of different
music genres within my
magazine.
The denotation of the masthead
Xtra connotes that there is going
to be “extra” news, facts and
many more.
The main image will be
a close up but will be
cut off at the shoulder.
This image will be
related to what my
magazine is based on
e.g. the way they
present themselves,
there style etc.
The frequency of the magazine will be
monthly as I want my audience to see and
read as much as possibly in the space of
one year, for the likes of there enjoyment.

Font styles conclusion
This is my favourite font style out of
the three for mixer, as I feel this
stands out more and will catch the
publics eye with its bold text. The
name Mixer connotes the fact that
you can mix up various different
tracks for them to interlink with one
another.
This is my favourite font style out of
the three for Xtra, this has a different
look to it and I wanted to try
something different with the styles
for Xtra. The name Xtra connotes
that can listen to extra tracks from an
artists album.
What will you “repeat” (Steve Neale – 1980)
In the two magazines, I will keep the layout the same as my magazine of
inspiration. The way the magazine will be laid out will be very easy for the
reader to read as I want the magazine to catch the eye of the reader.
Throughout both front covers of my magazines there will be little changes to
the magazine front covers such as the main change being the name of the
magazine. Also the background colours and the font of the magazine name.
The top left of the magazine is where XXL have put
there name and this is very similar to where I want
to put mine. I will also have my main image going
through the centre of the cover

I am going repeat using the drop capital, pull quote, main image, page

Mood board conclusions
I have used this image because I feel that this
Rolex shows that I want my magazine to be
well known throughout all countries. If
everyone had the money for a gold Rolex,
everyone would be getting one, what I'm
saying is everyone will have the money to buy
my magazine
I have used this image because I want my
magazine to be a fast selling magazine, I want it
to run out of stock so quickly because it shows
that my magazine is so successfully, for
example, the Yeezys are a very successful style
of shoe and every wants a pair of these shoes.
DPS Inspiration
The main image shows who
the interview is based around
Bow Wow in this issue and he
gives you a sight into what
others think of him. He also
within in this interview which
is pretty lengthy he may
reveal some childhood
memories or childhood
questions that may be asked.
The drop capital is where
the magazine has outlined
where you should start
reading from. The drop
capital is used to make the
interview stand out, putting
a drop capital in makes the
reader want to read it as
they may think it is very
interesting.
This is a pull quote indicating what he think of something in his life.
“you just have to give them a little edge. Cause if I keep making bounce
with me. They’re gonna keep putting me in that category of kiddie
rapper. I’m 18 now.” these are thoughts as he thinks people are judging
him on his past in the movies
The page number is at the
bottom of the to indicate
obviously if you were to go
back to this page you can
find this page easier.
Summary of Ideas – Mixer
The genre of my magazine is going to be R&B with bits of hip hop in it, as I
feel that this genre will attract a lot of people towards my magazine and this
is essential in the popularity of a magazine.
The colours of my magazine are black, grey and red are my colours of choice
for my magazine. The colour scheme that I have chosen depicts to the reader
that it is urgent that they read this magazine. They grey on the magazine is to
connote a sophisticated and that I don’t want to go over the top with my
magazine colours and keep them natural.
The price of my magazine will be £3.50 as I feel this is a perfect price for my
magazine as it is new to the market and don’t know whether a lot of people
will buy my magazine.

Target Audience
Katz
The audience can relate to the artist that I am going to have on my front cover through the clothing that
they are wearing, also the way that they are positioned can connote there hierarchy that they have in the
music industry.
Hartley
Age: The age range that I am going to focus my magazine on is 15-24. As I feel that this age range are
starting to get into or currently into this style of music, basing my magazine around R&B will mean that I
am going to sell many issues of my magazine.
Gender: The gender that the magazine is mainly aimed at is males, as I feel males are more into this style
of music. This is not saying that it isn't available to females as I feel females are also going to like reading
about this magazine, as I plan to feature female R&B artists in it in the future.
Maslow
When my target audience is reading about there favourite artists they will be then immediately wanting
to improve their status in society as they will want to be more like them. Due to social-climbing it is
important that in todays society we give the audience a sense of confidence when wanting to change
their image or character.
Form and style
The layout of the magazine is going to be well presented. As I want it to clearly show
the main focus of the magazine, having the main image through the centre of the
front cover will show the focal point of the magazine.
I will also have the main image fading into the title, so I will have the main image
just in front of the masthead, therefore the main image may cover the name of the
magazine.
I’ll use the colours black, grey and red for Mixer magazine. The colour scheme that I
have chosen depicts to the reader that it is urgent that they read this magazine.
They grey on the magazine is to connote a sophisticated and that I don’t want to go
over the top with my magazine colours and keep them natural.
I am also going to use black and red for my Xtra magazine but instead of grey use
dark grey to add in a tiny bit of change. The dark grey will illustrate boldness and
issues something that you would usually associate with the business world.
Draft Interview1. Hello Harry, how are you?
I’m very good, thank you, how are you?
2. Yes I am good to thank you for asking. To start off, I hear that you’re bringing out a debut album?
Yes, indeed I am, it’s called “H” and it’s going to be a major hit and I think this is really going to kick start my career. It’s
got some great songs on there that I think a lot of people are going to love. There are also features from major artists
from the R&B industry.
3. What’s the best part about being such a massive artist?
I guess it’s the support from the crowd and your fans that really gets you going as an artist. Once they’ve shown that
they’re interested your music you can really kick start your music career and start to produce more music, for example,
my new album. Meeting the fans is also a big part in your rise to fame, as they are the ones that are supporting you the
whole way through. I remember one time, I had offered VIP tickets to one of my shows and I had a couple of children
come back stage and I had greeted them. One of them had Cerebral Palsy and the other had just been diagnosed with
cancer. My heart sunk as soon as I heard the story and the only way I could thank them was by giving them VIP tickets
to my world tour and an all inclusive stay at the Hotel that I’m also going to be staying at.
4. I just heard you say that you’re going to be touring the world in the major cities, please tell us more?
Yes, I want to tour the world, go to the massive cities and perform for the people that support my music. I feel that
touring the world will allow me to explore the world not just as apart of my music but personally, taking in loads of
ideas that I could use for a next album. Touring the world will obviously be a surreal experience and I am pleasured that
arenas are available for me to do my tour and show to the people of the world what I can offer when I’m performing.
5. What inspired you to start a singing career?
Umm… I guess it was the fact that when I was younger I saw many R&B artists doing their thing on stage or in their
music videos and this inspired me to get up and start my career as an artist. I felt I could put my own style onto my
music if I were to start my singing career, with the tracks that are on my album I believe this has shown why I started
my career.
6. Are there any famous artists you admire?
Yes, there are I admire many artists but I think the one that stands out to me is Drake. I feel that he is a lot of younger
peoples favourite artists and I feel that to me he is my inspiration, as one day I want to achieve what he has achieved. If
I were to get even a percentage of what he achieved I would be very thankful and blessed, but my aim is to be known
world wide for music and known as a public figure also.
Environment of presentation
I have taken many images of the environment where I presented my pitch to the
publishers. I used a whiteboard to project my presentation on Prezi onto. The
Publishers were seated around the room at several different desks. I located them
around the room so that they had there own opinion on my pitch. I used a slide
changer because it allow me to present myself around the room instead of having to
be near the keyboard, to keep on leaning over the change the slide constantly.
Feedback of Pitch – Survey Monkey
The first question is “What do you think I can do to improve my pitch?”. I chose this
question because it straight away gives me something to work on, also if they are all
the same answers as shown below, it clearly shows that there is only one real place of
improvement that needs to be done and that’s to make a FaceBook page for both of
my magazine. The second question is “Were my magazine front covers appealing?”. I
chose this question because it asks the audience whether they liked my magazine
front covers but not asking them right out straight saying whether they liked it or not.
The third question is “How do you think I can improve both of my front covers?”. I
chose this question because I am asking where they think I can improve my magazine
in different aspects. The fourth question is “What would you change about both of my
magazine front covers?”. I asked this question because I’m now asking them if I were
to give them my magazine what would they do to make the magazine better or if they
were to change anything.
The fifth question that I asked was “Did I cover everything from the mark scheme?”. I
chose this question because I wanted to get feedback on whether if I have missed
anything key that I should’ve put in in order to get the higher grade overall. The sixth
question was “Were my proposals detailed enough?”. I chose this question because I
wanted to know whether I had put enough detail in so that when it comes to them
reading them, they will get everything that I put on them. The last question was
“Overall, how well do you think my presentation went?”. I chose this question because
I wanted an overall review of how my presentation went overall and to see how much
feedback I will get.
Production Plan
This is a detailed production plan for the development and creation for Mixer. Included is the sections of pre-production,
production and post production. In each of these sections it has been calculated the estimated costs of the process and the staff
and equipment that will be needed. The production time is over a period of 5 weeks, I feel that this is appropriate as I think that I
need this period of time to get into the office, also putting all the equipment up and taking at least 3 weeks to get photographers
and putting all the magazine together, which will be done by 10 employees together.
Ethical & Legal Issues
http://www.pcc.org.uk/
All press complaints are handled by a regulated body. As the slides suggests handling
complaints was switched to IPSO who now handle all complaints relating to press
organisations.
Role of Relevant Regulatory Bodies
What is IPSO?
The Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) is the independent regulator for
the newspaper and magazine industry in the UK. We hold newspapers and magazines
to account for their actions, protect individual rights, uphold high standards of
journalism and help to maintain freedom of expression for the press.
What does IPSO do?
• They make sure that the member newspaper and magazines follow the Editor’s
Code.
• They investigate complaints about printed and online material that may breach the
Editors’ Code.
How is IPSO run?
IPSO is run by the government and/or multiple procedures that will eventually take
place.
https://www.ipso.co.uk/about-ipso/
Role of Relevant Regulatory Bodies
When it comes to creating magazines, there is an Editors Code of Practice:
3 of the main areas in the Code of Practice are as follows
Accuracy
The Press must take care not to publish inaccurate, misleading or distorted information or
images, including headlines not supported by the text. A significant inaccuracy, misleading
statement or distortion must be corrected, promptly and with due prominence, and — where
appropriate — an apology published. In cases involving IPSO, due prominence should be as
required by the regulator.
Privacy
Everyone is entitled to respect for his or her private and family life, home, health and
correspondence, including digital communications. Editors will be expected to justify intrusions
into any individual's private life without consent. Account will be taken of the complainant's own
public disclosures of information.
Harassment
Journalists must not engage in intimidation, harassment or persistent pursuit. They must not
persist in questioning, telephoning, pursuing or photographing individuals once asked to desist;
nor remain on property when asked to leave and must not follow them. If requested, they must
identify themselves and whom they represent.
Source: https://www.ipso.co.uk/IPSO/cop.html
ASA (Advertising Standards Authority)
This is the governing body set up to ensure that any advertising in print
medium is carefully monitored and does not deliberately mislead or deceive
the reader.
Copyright ©
Copyright: is when there is a legal right which lasts for a certain amount of years so you can’t print,
publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic or musical material that already exists.
When looking for the copyright sign to see if it has been copyrighted or not, you should look near
the barcode because it is usually there.
Copyright infringement is the use of works protected by copyright law without permission,
infringing certain exclusive rights granted to the copyright holder, such as the right to reproduce,
distribute, display or perform the protected work.
Royalties
Royalties is when a magazine has included content which is copyrighted and if someone else
includes this information then they have to pay the original magazine.
If you were to do this without asking permission from the original magazine, you will end up being
fined and they will make sure the magazine is taken down and not sold anymore.
You shouldn’t be using other peoples information or images without there confirmation because it
can result in very serious circumstances.
Regulatory Issues
IP/Watermark
Content that usually has copyright can be referred to as Intellectual Property
(IP) and this is protected by the law. IP can be divided into two categories;
Industrial Property and Copyright. . As well as IP on printed work, you can get
a digital watermark which protects any copyrighted content from any
magazine online and in any digital format. It is important to have this because
it means people will have to pay you to use your information/ ideas. The best
way to protect your IP is to acquire a patent. However, this can take several
years to get and costs over $7000 in fees.
Regulatory Issues
Data Protection Act (1998)
The Data Protection Act protects any personal information and how personal information is used within
business.
Principles of Data Protection
Firstly, Personal data shall be processed fairly and lawfully and, in particular, shall not be processed unless – at
least one of the conditions in Schedule 2 is met, and secondly, in the case of sensitive personal data at least
one of the conditions in Schedule 3 is also met.
Secondly, Personal data shall be obtained only for one or more specified and lawful purposes, and shall not be
further processed in any manner opposing with that purpose or those purposes.
Lastly, Personal data should be accurate and, where necessary, kept up to date and should be adequate and
relevant and not excessive in relation to the purpose of the process.
Complaints procedures
Complaints can now be made online
via the IPSO address.

complaint/complaints-form/

  • 1.
  • 2. Magazine of Inspiration My masthead will be very similar to the way that XXL have laid there's out. As I want to keep it as close to my magazine of inspiration as possible, as this is the magazine that I want mine to look like. The main image will be in the middle of the front cover as it is the main focus of the magazine. I want my artist to be in the centre of the page because it also allows me to put stuff behind it. I want my cover stories to be on either side of the main image. This then allows the other space where I will put my cover stories so the reader can also see that there are other stories in the magazine. The main headline is where they have put the main story in the biggest text as it is what is focused on in this magazine copy. I want my main headline to be in this format because it shows the main focus of the magazine. The barcode has the date, issue and price on it.
  • 3. 15-24 years old as I feel that this age range are still involved with this type of music and will enjoy the magazine a lot. I’m basing my magazine around the magazine of inspiration which is XXL and this is because I want to have a similar target audience because its my magazine of inspiration and I want to relate it to their magazine. • Cost of Magazine: £3.50 Black, grey and red are my colours of choice for my magazine. The colour scheme that I have chosen depicts to the reader that it is urgent that they read this magazine. Mixer Colour scheme Masthead Target audience Frequency Types of Images Masthead names • Playlist • Mixer • Xtra I like all three of these names as I feel they are very catchy and will catch the eye of the target audience. The denotation of the masthead Mixer connotes that there is going to be a “mix” of different music genres within my magazine. The denotation of the masthead Xtra connotes that there is going to be “extra” news, facts and many more. The main image will be a close up but will be cut off at the shoulder. This image will be related to what my magazine is based on e.g. the way they present themselves, there style etc. The frequency of the magazine will be monthly as I want my audience to see and read as much as possibly in the space of one year, for the likes of there enjoyment.

I’m basing my magazine around the magazine of inspiration which is XXL and this is because I want to have a similar target audience because its my magazine of inspiration and I want to relate it to their magazine. Black, dark grey and red are my colours of choice for my magazine. The colour scheme that I have chosen depicts to the reader that it is urgent that they read this magazine. • 11. Font styles conclusion This is my favourite font style out of the three for mixer, as I feel this stands out more and will catch the publics eye with its bold text. The name Mixer connotes the fact that you can mix up various different tracks for them to interlink with one another. This is my favourite font style out of the three for Xtra, this has a different look to it and I wanted to try something different with the styles for Xtra. The name Xtra connotes that can listen to extra tracks from an artists album.
  • 12. What will you “repeat” (Steve Neale – 1980) In the two magazines, I will keep the layout the same as my magazine of inspiration. The way the magazine will be laid out will be very easy for the reader to read as I want the magazine to catch the eye of the reader. Throughout both front covers of my magazines there will be little changes to the magazine front covers such as the main change being the name of the magazine. Also the background colours and the font of the magazine name. The top left of the magazine is where XXL have put there name and this is very similar to where I want to put mine. I will also have my main image going through the centre of the cover
  • 13. What will you “repeat” (Steve Neale – 1980) In the two magazines, I will keep the layout the same as my magazine of inspiration. The way the magazine will be laid out will be very easy for the reader to read as I want the magazine to catch the eye of the reader. Throughout both double page spreads of my magazines there will be little changes to the magazine such as the main change being the name of the magazine. Also the background colours and the font of the magazine name. I am going repeat using the drop capital, pull quote, main image, page number for example.
  • 16. Mood board conclusions I have used this image because I feel that this Rolex shows that I want my magazine to be well known throughout all countries. If everyone had the money for a gold Rolex, everyone would be getting one, what I'm saying is everyone will have the money to buy my magazine I have used this image because I want my magazine to be a fast selling magazine, I want it to run out of stock so quickly because it shows that my magazine is so successfully, for example, the Yeezys are a very successful style of shoe and every wants a pair of these shoes.
  • 17. DPS Inspiration The main image shows who the interview is based around Bow Wow in this issue and he gives you a sight into what others think of him. He also within in this interview which is pretty lengthy he may reveal some childhood memories or childhood questions that may be asked. The drop capital is where the magazine has outlined where you should start reading from. The drop capital is used to make the interview stand out, putting a drop capital in makes the reader want to read it as they may think it is very interesting. This is a pull quote indicating what he think of something in his life. “you just have to give them a little edge. Cause if I keep making bounce with me. They’re gonna keep putting me in that category of kiddie rapper. I’m 18 now.” these are thoughts as he thinks people are judging him on his past in the movies The page number is at the bottom of the to indicate obviously if you were to go back to this page you can find this page easier.
  • 18. Summary of Ideas – Mixer The genre of my magazine is going to be R&B with bits of hip hop in it, as I feel that this genre will attract a lot of people towards my magazine and this is essential in the popularity of a magazine. The colours of my magazine are black, grey and red are my colours of choice for my magazine. The colour scheme that I have chosen depicts to the reader that it is urgent that they read this magazine. They grey on the magazine is to connote a sophisticated and that I don’t want to go over the top with my magazine colours and keep them natural. The price of my magazine will be £3.50 as I feel this is a perfect price for my magazine as it is new to the market and don’t know whether a lot of people will buy my magazine.
  • 19. Summary of Ideas – Xtra The genre of my magazine is going to be R&B with bits of hip hop in it, as I feel that this genre will attract a lot of people towards my magazine and this is essential in the popularity of a magazine. The colours of my magazine are black, grey and red are my colours of choice for my magazine. The colour scheme that I have chosen depicts to the reader that it is urgent that they read this magazine. • 20. Target Audience Katz The audience can relate to the artist that I am going to have on my front cover through the clothing that they are wearing, also the way that they are positioned can connote there hierarchy that they have in the music industry. Hartley Age: The age range that I am going to focus my magazine on is 15-24. As I feel that this age range are starting to get into or currently into this style of music, basing my magazine around R&B will mean that I am going to sell many issues of my magazine. Gender: The gender that the magazine is mainly aimed at is males, as I feel males are more into this style of music. This is not saying that it isn't available to females as I feel females are also going to like reading about this magazine, as I plan to feature female R&B artists in it in the future. Maslow When my target audience is reading about there favourite artists they will be then immediately wanting to improve their status in society as they will want to be more like them. Due to social-climbing it is important that in todays society we give the audience a sense of confidence when wanting to change their image or character.
  • 21. Form and style The layout of the magazine is going to be well presented. As I want it to clearly show the main focus of the magazine, having the main image through the centre of the front cover will show the focal point of the magazine. I will also have the main image fading into the title, so I will have the main image just in front of the masthead, therefore the main image may cover the name of the magazine. I’ll use the colours black, grey and red for Mixer magazine. The colour scheme that I have chosen depicts to the reader that it is urgent that they read this magazine. They grey on the magazine is to connote a sophisticated and that I don’t want to go over the top with my magazine colours and keep them natural. I am also going to use black and red for my Xtra magazine but instead of grey use dark grey to add in a tiny bit of change. The dark grey will illustrate boldness and issues something that you would usually associate with the business world.
  • 22. It’s got some great songs on there that I think a lot of people are going to love. There are also features from major artists from the R&B industry. 3. What’s the best part about being such a massive artist? I guess it’s the support from the crowd and your fans that really gets you going as an artist. Once they’ve shown that they’re interested your music you can really kick start your music career and start to produce more music, for example, my new album. Meeting the fans is also a big part in your rise to fame, as they are the ones that are supporting you the whole way through. I remember one time, I had offered VIP tickets to one of my shows and I had a couple of children come back stage and I had greeted them. One of them had Cerebral Palsy and the other had just been diagnosed with cancer. My heart sunk as soon as I heard the story and the only way I could thank them was by giving them VIP tickets to my world tour and an all inclusive stay at the Hotel that I’m also going to be staying at. 4. I just heard you say that you’re going to be touring the world in the major cities, please tell us more? Yes, I want to tour the world, go to the massive cities and perform for the people that support my music. I feel that touring the world will allow me to explore the world not just as apart of my music but personally, taking in loads of ideas that I could use for a next album. Touring the world will obviously be a surreal experience and I am pleasured that arenas are available for me to do my tour and show to the people of the world what I can offer when I’m performing. 5. What inspired you to start a singing career? Umm… I guess it was the fact that when I was younger I saw many R&B artists doing their thing on stage or in their music videos and this inspired me to get up and start my career as an artist. I felt I could put my own style onto my music if I were to start my singing career, with the tracks that are on my album I believe this has shown why I started my career. 6. Are there any famous artists you admire? Yes, there are I admire many artists but I think the one that stands out to me is Drake. I feel that he is a lot of younger peoples favourite artists and I feel that to me he is my inspiration, as one day I want to achieve what he has achieved. If I were to get even a percentage of what he achieved I would be very thankful and blessed, but my aim is to be known world wide for music and known as a public figure also.
  • 23. Environment of presentation I have taken many images of the environment where I presented my pitch to the publishers. I used a whiteboard to project my presentation on Prezi onto. The Publishers were seated around the room at several different desks. I located them around the room so that they had there own opinion on my pitch. I used a slide changer because it allow me to present myself around the room instead of having to be near the keyboard, to keep on leaning over the change the slide constantly.
  • 24. Feedback of Pitch – Survey Monkey The first question is “What do you think I can do to improve my pitch?”. I chose this question because it straight away gives me something to work on, also if they are all the same answers as shown below, it clearly shows that there is only one real place of improvement that needs to be done and that’s to make a FaceBook page for both of my magazine. The second question is “Were my magazine front covers appealing?”. I chose this question because it asks the audience whether they liked my magazine front covers but not asking them right out straight saying whether they liked it or not.
  • 25. The third question is “How do you think I can improve both of my front covers?”. I chose this question because I am asking where they think I can improve my magazine in different aspects. The fourth question is “What would you change about both of my magazine front covers?”. I asked this question because I’m now asking them if I were to give them my magazine what would they do to make the magazine better or if they were to change anything.
  • 26. The fifth question that I asked was “Did I cover everything from the mark scheme?”. I chose this question because I wanted to get feedback on whether if I have missed anything key that I should’ve put in in order to get the higher grade overall. The sixth question was “Were my proposals detailed enough?”. I chose this question because I wanted to know whether I had put enough detail in so that when it comes to them reading them, they will get everything that I put on them. The last question was “Overall, how well do you think my presentation went?”. I chose this question because I wanted an overall review of how my presentation went overall and to see how much feedback I will get.
  • 27. Production Plan This is a detailed production plan for the development and creation for Mixer. Included is the sections of pre-production, production and post production. In each of these sections it has been calculated the estimated costs of the process and the staff and equipment that will be needed. The production time is over a period of 5 weeks, I feel that this is appropriate as I think that I need this period of time to get into the office, also putting all the equipment up and taking at least 3 weeks to get photographers and putting all the magazine together, which will be done by 10 employees together.
  • 28. Ethical & Legal Issues http://www.pcc.org.uk/ All press complaints are handled by a regulated body. As the slides suggests handling complaints was switched to IPSO who now handle all complaints relating to press organisations.
  • 29. Role of Relevant Regulatory Bodies What is IPSO? The Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) is the independent regulator for the newspaper and magazine industry in the UK. We hold newspapers and magazines to account for their actions, protect individual rights, uphold high standards of journalism and help to maintain freedom of expression for the press. What does IPSO do? • They make sure that the member newspaper and magazines follow the Editor’s Code. • They investigate complaints about printed and online material that may breach the Editors’ Code. How is IPSO run? IPSO is run by the government and/or multiple procedures that will eventually take place. https://www.ipso.co.uk/about-ipso/
  • 30. Role of Relevant Regulatory Bodies When it comes to creating magazines, there is an Editors Code of Practice: 3 of the main areas in the Code of Practice are as follows Accuracy The Press must take care not to publish inaccurate, misleading or distorted information or images, including headlines not supported by the text. A significant inaccuracy, misleading statement or distortion must be corrected, promptly and with due prominence, and — where appropriate — an apology published. In cases involving IPSO, due prominence should be as required by the regulator. Privacy Everyone is entitled to respect for his or her private and family life, home, health and correspondence, including digital communications. Editors will be expected to justify intrusions into any individual's private life without consent. Account will be taken of the complainant's own public disclosures of information. Harassment Journalists must not engage in intimidation, harassment or persistent pursuit. They must not persist in questioning, telephoning, pursuing or photographing individuals once asked to desist; nor remain on property when asked to leave and must not follow them. If requested, they must identify themselves and whom they represent. Source: https://www.ipso.co.uk/IPSO/cop.html
  • 31. ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) This is the governing body set up to ensure that any advertising in print medium is carefully monitored and does not deliberately mislead or deceive the reader.
  • 32. Copyright © Copyright: is when there is a legal right which lasts for a certain amount of years so you can’t print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic or musical material that already exists. When looking for the copyright sign to see if it has been copyrighted or not, you should look near the barcode because it is usually there. Copyright infringement is the use of works protected by copyright law without permission, infringing certain exclusive rights granted to the copyright holder, such as the right to reproduce, distribute, display or perform the protected work.
  • 33. Royalties Royalties is when a magazine has included content which is copyrighted and if someone else includes this information then they have to pay the original magazine. If you were to do this without asking permission from the original magazine, you will end up being fined and they will make sure the magazine is taken down and not sold anymore. You shouldn’t be using other peoples information or images without there confirmation because it can result in very serious circumstances.
  • 34. Regulatory Issues IP/Watermark Content that usually has copyright can be referred to as Intellectual Property (IP) and this is protected by the law. IP can be divided into two categories; Industrial Property and Copyright. . As well as IP on printed work, you can get a digital watermark which protects any copyrighted content from any magazine online and in any digital format. It is important to have this because it means people will have to pay you to use your information/ ideas. The best way to protect your IP is to acquire a patent. However, this can take several years to get and costs over $7000 in fees.
  • 35. Regulatory Issues Data Protection Act (1998) The Data Protection Act protects any personal information and how personal information is used within business. Principles of Data Protection Firstly, Personal data shall be processed fairly and lawfully and, in particular, shall not be processed unless – at least one of the conditions in Schedule 2 is met, and secondly, in the case of sensitive personal data at least one of the conditions in Schedule 3 is also met. Secondly, Personal data shall be obtained only for one or more specified and lawful purposes, and shall not be further processed in any manner opposing with that purpose or those purposes. Lastly, Personal data should be accurate and, where necessary, kept up to date and should be adequate and relevant and not excessive in relation to the purpose of the process.
  • 36. Complaints procedures Complaints can now be made online via the IPSO address. https://www.ipso.co.uk/make-a- complaint/complaints-form/
