1975 Microsoft is founded Bill Gates and Paul Allen.

 IBM uses Microsoft’s 16-bit operating system for its first
person computer.
1983  Paul resigns as executive vice-president.
 Jon Shirley is made president of Microsoft.
 Microsoft introduces Mouse and Word for MS-DOS.
1985  Microsoft and IBM form joint development agreement.
 Launch Windows 1.0.
 Bill Gates becomes youngest billionaire.
1986  Moved headquarters to Redmond, Washington.
 Became publically traded company.

1990-1996: Windows 3.0 and The Internet
1990  Becomes the first PC software company to gross $1 billion
in sales; launched Windows 3.0; introduces Microsoft Office.
1992  Windows is used by more than 25 million licensed users.
 Acquires PC database company Fox Software.
1994  Microsoft releases Windows NT.
 U.S. Justice Department files Competitive Impact Statement.
1995  Microsoft launches Windows 95.
 Sells 1 million copies in 4 days.
 Internet Explorer released as a Windows add-on.
 Web portal MSN is launched.
1996  Forms 24/7 cable news channel MSNBC with NBC Universal.

Introduction  Founded on April 4, 1975.  American multinational software, hardware and services corporation based in Redmond, Washington.  Develops, manufactures, licenses, and supports wide range of products and services.  The world’s largest software maker measured by revenue.  One world’s most valuable companies with more than $90 billion cash in the bank.

History: The Beginning 1975 Microsoft is founded Bill Gates and Paul Allen. Sold BASIC, the first PC programming language. 1981  Microsoft, Inc. is incorporated.  IBM uses Microsoft’s 16-bit operating system for its first person computer. 1983  Paul resigns as executive vice-president.  Jon Shirley is made president of Microsoft.  Microsoft introduces Mouse and Word for MS-DOS. 1985  Microsoft and IBM form joint development agreement.  Launch Windows 1.0.  Bill Gates becomes youngest billionaire. 1986  Moved headquarters to Redmond, Washington.  Became publically traded company. 1989  Microsoft, Sybase and Ashton-Tate develops SQL Server 1.0.   • 6. 1990-1996: Windows 3.0 and The Internet 1990  Becomes the first PC software company to gross $1 billion in sales; launched Windows 3.0; introduces Microsoft Office. 1992  Windows is used by more than 25 million licensed users.  Acquires PC database company Fox Software. 1994  Microsoft releases Windows NT.  U.S. Justice Department files Competitive Impact Statement. 1995  Microsoft launches Windows 95.  Sells 1 million copies in 4 days.  Internet Explorer released as a Windows add-on.  Web portal MSN is launched. 1996  Forms 24/7 cable news channel MSNBC with NBC Universal. Microsoft case.  PocketPC 2000 is released. 2001  Windows XP is released worldwide.  Xbox game console is released. 2003  Windows server is launched.  PocketPC becomes Windows Mobile.  Acquires web conferencing company PlaceWare for $200 million. 2005  MSN launches new search service.  Acquires productivity software company, Groove Networks for $120 million. 2007  Windows Vista and Office 2007 are released to consumers.   • 13. Office  The most used productivity software in the world.  Office 365 launched on June 28, 2011.  Replaced Microsoft Business Productivity Online Suite.  Most downloaded mobile office productivity app.  Office 365 is free for students.

Xbox  The first Xbox gaming console was in November 2001.  Sold one million units in three weeks.  Xbox Live popularized online social gaming.  Used by more than 30 million daily active users.  Xbox 360 was the best-selling second generation gaming console in 2010 and 2011.  Introduced hands-free gaming with the Kinect.  Xbox One was introduced with speech control.

Skype  Launched in 2003.  At $8.5 billion, Skype is Microsoft largest acquisition.  The number video calling service in the world.  300 million active users.  4.5 daily active users.  300 million Skype video minutes are used daily.  Two trillion video and voice call minutes used on Skype.  Replaced Lync, Microsoft’s business video and voice solutions.
  • 16. Bing  Controls 20% of the search market.  Powers Yahoo’s search engine.  Reached a new search deal in April 2015.  Formerly MSN Live Search.

  2. June 27, 2008, founder Bill Gates retires as Chief Software Architect. Microsoft purchases Danger, Inc., the company that created the most popular phone at the time, the Sidekick, for $500 million. Microsoft jumps into cloud computing with launch of Windows Azure. The consumer favorite Windows 7 is released. As a result of Microsoft’s focus on the Windows platform, it created a brand new mobile OS to play catch-up to Apple and Google.
