Editor's Notes
This presentation is based on my experience during the Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (TEA) in the US, September- November 2011. It starts with presenting Galena High School where I spent four weeks.
Reno is the second biggest city in Nevada, US with about 200,000 inhabitants.
This city, known as The Biggest Little City in the world, is famous for its casinos. There is also a big University, UNR – University of Nevada, Rino; which welcomes many international students. It was the place, where I had my internship in the fall of 2012.
There are 11 public high schools in Reno, and one of the well-respected one is Galena High School. I spent part of the exchange practice in Galena, observing lessons and teaching in my partner teacher’s classes. Click on the picture to watch a short video or find it at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1smiOPUH1w&feature=youtu.beThis is a morning in October. You can see students entering the school building. Most students go to school by bus, a few of them walk or their parents take them by car.
This is the school entrance. Students are getting ready for the first lesson. If you click on the picture, you will be able to watch a short clip. You can also find it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zM8eXE_nboI&feature=youtu.be
This is the school website. If you click the link on the top, you can browse it. On the left-hand site, in the Students’ handbook section, you can read everything a student need to know – about subjects, discipline, etc. Each school in The US has a mascot. It’s everywhere in the school. Galina’s symbol is the grizzly bear. Its footsteps are in the school yard, also students wear special T-shirts with the grizzly mascot.
Students can choose what subjectsto study. These are some advanced placement classes at junior and senior years. Students pass exams and their rates at Galena are usually very high, which gives the school a well-respected position in the area.
Students can choose the sport they play at school. For the last fall they had 7 options listed above. Students can join a club, too and it’s only 25$ a year.
Students’ weekly timetable for the year 2011-2012. it’s been taken from the school website.
These are the start, the end dates of the school year; the holidays and the exams.
If a student wants to go to the toilet, they write their name on a special sheet of yellow paper on the wall. They shouldtake this black “toilet” bag and insert their student’s card in it. Otherwise they are punished.
Student learning is the main priority of the school staff. Teachers use interactive methods and games in the lessons. One of the ways to motivate the students and review content material and vocabulary is playing Jeopardy games. It was used twice on teaching purposes during my stay in the US. For that is reason I made a new game about the US.
This is the game we play. To play it online, click on the picture, or play it online at: http://www.superteachertools.com/jeopardy/usergames/Jun201225/game1340123354.php
