This document discusses the work of Angelo Vermeulen, an artist who creates interactive art installations called "Biomodds" that merge art, ecology, and community building. His Biomodds use living microorganisms and computer systems to create semi-autonomous ecosystems. One project, Biomodd [LBA2], built a community in the Philippines around creating and exhibiting a Biomodd. It used social media, fundraising, and partnerships with local artists to advocate for environmental and digital causes while exploring Philippine hybridity and traditions. Biomodd projects have since expanded internationally with collaborations across multiple continents.

61. “The [Philippine] government cut programs in the arts in
elementary schools and increased funding and attention on
science and math. This seems misguided and myopic. What
the Philippines probably needs more than ever is a deeply
nuanced public school curriculum that emphasizes creative
thinking, aesthetics, and technology, and which centers on
themes of traditional/indigenous knowledge, cultural
diversity, history, globalization, and hybridity.”
