- Introduction I am a Staff Researcher and Phd Candidate with the newly established UHI Centre for Nordic Studies, based in Scalloway, Shetland. My Phd project argues that the North Atlantic acts as an 'intercultural region‘ - using the continuing cultural links between Shetland and Norway as a case study. The research looks at post-Viking age intercultural links between Shetland and Norway - particularly in the 18th and 19th century, which saw the development of new geopolitical borders based on nation-states, and associated administrative regionalisation of Northern Europe in terms of centres and peripheries. The historical and cultural links between the Shetland Islands and Norwegian coastal communities are effectively explored as a case study, to demonstrate the continuity of cultural history between coastal communities that seem separated by boundaries (national, linguistic, geographical). The main focus of my research is to trace the impact of these changing perspectives via historical and cultural texts, but also to present evidence that the North Atlantic nevertheless continues to act as a cultural space, an 'intercultural region‘.
