UWP SEEKS FURTHER CLARIFICATION ON GOVERNMENT’S DECISION TO
HIRE FOREIGN COUNSEL
CASTRIES, Saint Lucia – Wednesday, February 5, 2014 – The United Workers Party
acknowledges Dominican Senior Counsel Anthony Astaphan's credentials and expertise. However,
the question of whether Mr Astaphan will be required to pay income tax and VAT on his
remuneration still remains unanswered.
Even while the Saint Lucia Labour Party accuses Political Leader, Allen Chastanet of double
standard in hiring foreign council, the SLP should have been wise enough to know the difference
between the use of funds of a private citizen and that of the State when making a comparison.
Additionally, the United Workers Party is still awaiting clarification as to whether Mr. Astaphan
has been assigned as senior counsel on the Grynberg matter and if so at what cost to the
taxpayer?
