IN THE ZONE
Can you believe we are already in the
Month of October? It seems like I
just arrived and now almost 6 months
later we are discussing and planning
programs, services and special events
that are going to happen for this
month. We have a lot planned for you
as you read this issue of In The Zone
Magazine, but just to highlight a few
items that are really awesome: The Family and MWR EXPO
on the 16th; highlighting all the super services and programs
that we offer… to include food tasting! We also have the finals
for the Rising Star Competition at Camp Stanley on the 19th in
conjunction with the Stanley Fest. We also feature the Sesame
Street Show on the 21st with two showings, a special C&W
concert the 23rd with recording Star- Aaron Tippin, AFAP
Conference on the 24th & 25th and the list goes on! Peruse
carefully through the “Zone” to find your special niche and get
involved! As I leave you to peruse through this magazine, I
want to thank all of you for supporting the many programs we
had in September – Labor Day Festivities as Camp Casey with
more than 2,000 of you in attendance, 287 people participating
at the 5k Run at Camp Stanley, 86 participating in the CRC
5k Run and finally for your continued support of all of “your”
Family and MWR programs and services!!

The event is free to all members of the Area l

Over 40 different booths will be set-up
throughout the Gateway Club to showcase the many

has available for military and civilian personnel.
“The Family and MWR EXPO is designed to be an
interesting and fun event. Everyone who attends
the festive, informational EXPO will receive a wide
assortment of free gift items, free food, chances to
win fabulous prizes and more while seeing up close
and personal everything Family and MWR offers
to patrons on a daily basis,” says Frank A. DeSilva,
Family and MWR EXPO Project Officer.
“Visitors to the EXPO will be able to talk to facility
and activity managers one-on-one about their
respective programs and discuss any concerns they
may have to improve the overall Family and MWR
program throughout Area l. Plus, it gives everyone
a first-hand view of the many first-class facilities,
programs and services the Area l Family and MWR
has available for them. It’s a great opportunity for
us to show the community what we have to offer
and to get their feedback. That’s important,” DeSilva
says.

and our sponsors,” DeSilva says.
Sports and health fitness programs play an
important part in Family and MWR and their
presence at the EXPO will reflect the wide interest
these programs have throughout the community.
A large area has been set aside for Sport Fitness
functional activities, aquatics programs and health
and human performance exhibits and displays as
well as interactive health screening activities.
Other exhibits and displays include outdoor
recreation equipment, such as all terrain vehicles
(ATVs), go-karts, kayaks, snowboard, skis, scuba
equipment displays and a special Paintball area
where visitors can try to hit the target.
“We’ll also have a new video golf screen set-up
where people can have their swing recorded in
real time, thanks to Casey Golf Course manager
Pak, Song Yong,” DeSilva says. Their swing will be
recorded on a USB stick and given to each player on
the spot, something that is sure to please everyone
who participates.
The 2013 Family and MWR EXPO is sure to be well
received by everyone in the Area l community. There
is something for everyone, including children.
“The Family and MWR EXPO is open to everyone
authorized access to the installation,” DeSilva points
out. “That includes not only USFK I.D. card-holders
and KATUSAs, but their guests as well. The Family
and MWR EXPO is a major event. We welcome
everyone to come see what the Area l Family and
MWR Department has to offer,” DeSilva says.
“We can’t thank our two presenting sponsors
enough, Mr. Nam, Yung Hui, owner and President
of Music IT, and Sarah Bainbridge, Branch Manager
of the Camp Casey Navy Federal Credit Union. Ms
Ju Yeon Baek, President of Julie’s Realty is also a
supporting sponsor. Together, these key sponsors
helped make the 2013 Family and MWR EXPO
possible,” DeSilva says. “We’re pleased to have them
participate in the EXPO. They are always happy to
support our Area I Family and MWR programs.”
The 2013 Family and MWR EXPO at the Camp
Casey Gateway Club opens at 10 a.m. Wednesday,
October 16 and continues until 7 p.m.
15IN THE ZONE
16. All participants must have their passport or I.D. card
on them during the tour.
DMZ Tour Guidelines
- When viewing the Conference Room, do not touch any
equipment belonging to North Korea.
- Do not speak with, make any gesture toward, approach
or respond to personnel from the other side.
- Military or other official considerations may prevent
entry into the JSA.
- Casual clothes, such as ripped jeans, sleeveless shirts,
miniskirts, short pants, military clothes, and sandal/
slippers are not permitted during the tour.
- Shaggy or unkempt hair is not allowed.
- Children under 10 years of age are not allowed.
The Joint Security Area (JSA)
The JSA resembles a square measuring about 800
meters across. After the Armistice Agreement was
signed, the JSA became a neutral location where
guards from both sides were allowed to move about
freely. It was the only place in the Demilitarized Zone
(DMZ) where the Military Demarcation Line (MDL)
was originally not clearly marked.
That changed after North Korean guards murdered
two United Nations Command (UNC) officers with
axes on August 18, 1976. After the Ax Murder
Incident, the MDL was marked within the JSA, and
that marking system continues until today.
The only place where border crossings are allowed
is inside the conference buildings of the Military
Armistice Commission (MAC). The MDL in the JSA is
marked with one hundred and twenty six one-meter
high white stakes at 10 meter intervals. Throughout
the rest of the DMZ, the boundary is marked with
MDL markers. Each side owns six guard posts in the
JSA and no more than thirty five armed guards can
be present on each side.
The JSA is a venue for exchanges and negotiations
between the North and South. A variety of political
and economic issues, cultural conferences and Red
Cross meetings are held in the JSA.
Observation Post (OP) Dora
As the northernmost observatory in South Korea,
OP Dora is located within the DMZ and provides the
closest view of North Korea. Propaganda Village
and Farmland of North Korea lay in view just ahead
as do some areas of Gaeseong. The Gaeseong
Industrial Complex and a bronze statue of Kim Il
Song can be seen through a telescope.
DMZ Third Tunnel
The Third Tunnel was discovered 52 km away from
Seoul in the administrative district of Paju in 1978.
It is 1,635 meters in length, 2 meters in width and 2
meters in height. The tunnel’s size would allow an
army of thirty thousand fully-armed North Korean
Soldiers to pass through within an hour.
The Third Tunnel is the largest one discovered so
far, indicating North Korea’s desire to invade Seoul
during that time.

Getting around in Korea is easy and very affordable, but you need to know the system. This
special program will teach you how to use the bus and subway system so you can explore Korea

28. A
few months after SGT Chris Belvin arrived
in Korea back in 2012 he noticed an item
in the Family and Morale, Welfare and
Recreation Department In The Zone magazine
about the Camp Casey Arts and Crafts Shop.
Having worked on various arts and craft projects
before back in the States, SGT Belvin decided
to check out the facility at the Camp Casey
Community Activity Center, hoping to continue
honing his craft, so to speak.
“I completed several projects back in the States,”
Belvin says, “and decided to make a few pewter casting
projects. But then I saw the ceramics section of the
arts crafts shop and decided to make some ceramic
pieces to compliment my other craft projects.
“I was happy to see the Casey Arts Crafts Shop
had everything I needed to make nice ceramic pieces,
plus they have a great staff who were willing to show
me how to make them.
It didn’t take him long to learn, with Mr.
Han, Ki Yong and Mr. Kim, Sang Chon
teaching and assisting him every step of
the way.
“They are very knowledgeable and
are always there to help. For someone
like me, who has never worked with
ceramics before, their help and
knowledge helped me to complete
several projects,” Belvin says. “I can’t
say enough about how good they are at
what they do. They make me feel comfortable

COME TO LIFE

when I come in. I enjoy coming here to work on my
projects.”
Although he never worked with ceramics before,
Belvin says it took him less than two months to begin
creating some very nice pieces, including vases, dishes
and figurines, to name a few. He credits Hahn and Kim
for getting him started.
“I like to take a regular mold of an item and change it
a little to make something unique,” Belvin says.
“For example, I took a regular vase and made it
into a dragon pitcher. It came out really nice. I like to
modify regular molds that way to create something
different. I’m always thinking
of ways to create something
unusual, something unique.
“I made a red hanji paper-
covered dish out of a ceramic
sugar dish that I cast in ceramic,
then covered with traditional hanji paper, which they
have at the arts crafts shop. It’s kind of a mixed
media piece. I’m really happy with the way it turned
out,” he says with pride.
Belvin, who hails from Norfolk, VA, joined the
Army in 1996. Assigned to HHC, 1BSTB, this is his
second tour in Korea, having served here in 2000.
“I really enjoy coming here to work on my projects,”
Belvin says. “It’s inspiring and relaxing. Working on
projects here takes my mind off the everyday stress
that comes with being away from home. It helps you to
focus on something you enjoy doing, especially when
you see a piece ‘come to life’ as it progresses through
the various stages of production and you see the final
result.”
When asked if he would recommend the Casey
Arts Crafts Shop to others interested in making
their own projects, Belvin replied firmly “Absolutely!”
Several of his friends have also enjoyed making their
own ceramic projects at the Casey arts crafts shop,
including SGT Matthew Cave, SGT Aranday Miller
and PFC Austin McCormick.
“People should check this place out. They have a lot
of things to do to make time go by faster. The Casey
Arts Crafts Shop has other things people can do
besides ceramics. They offer several different types of
classes that appeal to a wide spectrum of interests for
both Soldiers and their families,” he concluded.
The Camp Casey Arts Crafts Shop is located in
the Casey Community Activity Center (CAC). They
are open weekdays from 12 to 8 p.m. and on weekends
and holidays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

There will be no middle ground with this book. You
will either believe it, or not.
Australian-based broadcaster Barry Eaton discovered
that he had psychic and clairvoyant skills while
studying astrology. After the death of his partner,
Judy, in 1997, it seemed obvious to Eaton that we lead
more lives than just one. Because of that, he accepted
the concept of reincarnation, and shortly after began
receiving messages directly from Judy and others in
the spirit world. The result is this book.
Eaton claims that he first realized he had psychic
abilities when a few months after Judy’s death, she
visited him through a medium. Even though he had

Reading
never described himself as a spirit guide, he had that
particular skill that allowed him to communicate with
the spirit world. He believes that most people have
this ability, but just don’t accept or develop it.
Eaton adds that we often feel the presence
of departed loved ones around us, especially in
challenging times, and explains that contact from the
spirit world can come in many forms — through our
dreams, for example.
If we approach death with an open mind, the
afterlife is like returning home after a long absence,
with family and friends waiting to welcome us, he
believes. Eaton points out that the biggest obstacle to
returning to the afterlife is fear, and once removed, a
spirit can move on happily.
Eaton frequently is asked what the other side looks
like. His answer is that this is a complex, difficult
question and not one with a simple answer. Just as
on earth, Eaton says, the afterlife contains different
places, which are located on many planes. We each
experience the afterlife from the level of our soul’s
development over its many lifetimes.
“Afterlife” will provide hope, alleviate fear and
offer comfort to many readers, and also offers advice
on how to prepare for our own personal journey.

The Right Way
to Use Credit Cards
Despite the U.S. economy’s continued struggle,
a sizable number of us are comfortable carrying
credit-card debt. Worse, we’re doing it to support
a lifestyle our income doesn’t cover.
A recent poll by the National Foundation for
Credit Counseling revealed that 18 percent of
respondents are comfortable carrying credit-card
debt from month to month.
Here’s what happens
when you depend on
credit cards to fund a
lifestyle when you don’t
have the cash:
• If your credit
ratio (availability vs.
percentage used) gets too
high, your credit scores go
down. Low credit scores
mean that if you should
need to borrow money,
you’ll pay higher interest.
Your insurance rates also
could go up. (Yes, they
check.)
• In an emergency, you
won’t have access to money you’ve already spent
on your credit card.
• Interest is added every month, which includes
interest from the previous month, so you’re
paying interest on the interest. Even more interest
is added every time a purchase is made. It can get
to the point that most of your payment goes to
pay interest, not the balance.
On the other hand, according to the poll, 21
percent of us don’t use credit cards at all. That
isn’t a good idea either, and here’s why:
• To make a major purchase such as a vehicle or
a house, you need a credit history. Credit cards are
one of the types of credit that generally make up
a credit history. No history, no loan.
• Credit cards can come in handy when there
are genuine bargains for items you need or for
emergencies.
• If you pay cash for
everything you buy and
disputes arise, you don’t
have the protection you
would have if those
purchases were made
with a credit card.
Returns are easier with a
credit card, too.
The majority of
respondents to the poll
indicated that it’s best to
use credit cards, but to
pay off the debt every
month. Here’s why that’s
a good idea:
• Low credit use and on-time payments raise
credit scores.
• Paying credit cards off monthly helps to avoid
interest and penalty.
• In case of emergencies, the balance of the
credit availability is there.
If you’d like to know more about The National
Foundation for Credit Counseling or ways to
handle your credit, go online to www.nfcc.org.

Army Family Action Plan
Conference
Army Family Action Plan (AFAP) is an Army-wide initiative to identify issues of concern to improve the
overall Quality of Life for Soldiers, Family members, Retirees and DA Civilians.
AFAP gives you an opportunity to voice your concerns related to USAG Red Cloud and Area I Community or
Big Army. This is your chance to let local or Army leadership know that what is working, what is not and
share your ideas about how to fix it. The Garrison Commander sees to it that pertinent issues are worked
toward resolution.
USAG Red Cloud and Area I conducts an AFAP conference every year. This year the conference is scheduled
for October 24-25, 2013 at the USAG Casey Community Activity Center.
AFAP brings people from all different walks of Army life together, making sure that everyone is represented
in predetermined groups. Delegates are made up of Active Duty, Family Members, Retirees and DA Civilians
from USAG Red Cloud and Area I. The delegates are charged with working together in set groups to review
and prioritize issues which are presented to the Garrison Commander at a brief-out session on the second
day of the conference.
Issues are collected at the installation level and issues may be resolved locally or Army-wide. Approximately
90% of AFAP issues are retained and worked at a local level and issues beyond the scope of this area are
forwarded to the Department of the Army for resolution.
Last year, 39 AFAP issues were submitted to the FY13 AFAP conference and 30 issues were closed as
“Complete” and 9 issues were closed as “Closed / Unattainable”.
Want to get involved? You can submit an issue by logging on to the AFAP Issue Management Information
System at: https://www.myarmyonesource.com/skins/aos2/display.aspx?ModuleID=a10586da-73a1-4402-9107-
58b7bf046a21action=submit , or by filling out an issue sheet and drop it in an AFAP submission box. AFAP
issue boxes will be located at your local Commissary, Post Exchange, and ACS.

62. Helping Victims of Domestic Abuse
Whether or not you recognize the signs, it's likely that someone you know is a victim of domestic abuse. The
person may be someone you serve with, someone from your community, a family member or friend. Victims
frequently hide their abuse out of fear that revealing it will escalate the violence. In military families, victims
and abusers may avoid reporting abuse when they're concerned about the consequences it might have on
the service member's career. But abuse usually doesn't stop without outside intervention. Instead, it tends to
become more frequent and more severe over time.
Understanding domestic abuse
Domestic abuse usually involves a pattern of violence and emotional and verbal abuse. The tactics are
meant to silence victims so that they're afraid to seek help. Underlying all domestic abuse is the abuser's
need to feel powerful and in control of another person's behavior and actions.
Victims of domestic abuse often have great difficulty getting out of abusive relationships. They may feel
ashamed or responsible for the violence, as if it were provoked or deserved. Or they may feel isolated and
alone, believing there's no one to turn to for help. They may fear for their life or their children's safety or be
financially dependent and have no means of support for themselves and their families.
If you think someone you know is subject to domestic abuse
No one should try to diagnose situations of domestic abuse. But being aware of the signs is the first step in
getting help or offering support to someone who may be at risk.
If you have a friend, relative, neighbor or co-worker who may be a victim of domestic abuse, reach out and
offer support. Many people are uncomfortable raising an issue they believe is none of their business, or they
fear that revealing suspicions will increase the risk of abuse or adversely affect a service member's career.
But domestic abuse can be a matter of life and death.
Be a part of the team that vows to prevent domestic
violence on Camp Casey and Area I. This is a great
opportunity to ask questions, get information and be a
part of something great. Refreshments will be served.
