America's New Energy Abundance

  1. 1. AMERICA’S NEW ENERGY ABUNDANCE AMERICA’S ENERGY SECURITY IS IMPROVING 1980 2008 2011 The 5th annual U.S. Energy Security Risk Index shows that America’s risk has declined for a second straight year. The energy revolution has made America more secure and has helped protect American consumers from global disruptions. MEASURING OUR ENERGY RISKS The Institute for 21st Century Energy’s Index of U.S. Energy Security Risk measures 37 different metrics and compares them to America’s average energy risk from 1970 to the present. It also looks forward to 2040 to determine if our energy security will improve or decline – and why. Of the 37 Index metrics, 14 showed an increase in risk of 1% or more 10 showed an decrease in risk of 1% or more 11 showed essentially no change in risk in 2013 Higher Risk 110 100 90 80 70 60 50 AMERICA’S ENERGY REVOLUTION For the second year in a row, we have seen America’s energy security risk improve. AMERICA HAS: Risk related to natural gas imports DECREASED BY SURPASSED RUSSIA AND SAUDI ARABIA IN ENERGY PRODUCTION INCREASED CRUDE OIL PRODUCTION 48% SINCE 2008 INCREASED NATURAL GAS PRODUCTION 53% SINCE 2008 2009 2013 1970 1972 1978 1992 2000 U.S. Energy Security Risk Index, 1970-2040 1970 1975 1980 1985 1990 1995 2000 2005 2010 2015 2020 2025 2030 2035 2040 Historical Forecast Index Value (1980 = 100) Lower Risk IN 2013: Risk related to crude oil imports DECREASED BY 18% 16% We paid $61 BILLION LESS to foreign energy supplies AMERICA THE ENERGY SUPERPOWER America is producing so much more oil and natural gas thanks to the “shale gale” that we are becoming a vital force in stabilizing world energy markets. North Dakota More than a MILLION Barrels per Day Increase in oil prodution by 177% since 2010 Marketed natural gas production grew by 72% from 2011 to 2012 Texas ranks as one of the ten largest oil producers in the world Texas TOP TEN HELP PROTECT AMERICA’S ABUNDANT ENERGY FUTURE The decline in our energy risk is being driven by America’s domestic energy revolution, but improvements in our energy security are not a given. Poorly designed policies that limit access to resources, and regulatory overreach have created uncertainty that threatens to hold back U.S. energy production.
