2. DEFINITION:
Counselling is a process of helping
individuals or group of people to gain
self-understanding in order to themselves.
Counselling provides an opportunity
for children to talk in confidence about
things that are worrying tem or affecting
their day to day life.
3. TYPES:
During counselling a free atmosphere is
allowed and freedom of speech is encouraged.
The counselees are free to express themselves
and their feelings.
There are two types of counselling. They are,
Individual counselling.
Group counselling.
4. INDIVIDUAL COUNSELLING:
It is referred to as one to one counselling.
It occurs between the professionally trained
counsellor and his/her client.
The goal of this counselling is to help the
client to understand himself, clarify and
direct his thought in oreder to make a
worthwhile decision.
5. GROUP COUNSELLING:
This is a counselling session that takes
place between the professionally trained
counsellor and a group of people.
Number of this group should not be
more than seven or atleast ten.
6. CLASSIFICATION:
Educational counselling.
Marital counselling.
Personal social counselling.
Rehabilitation counselling.
Vocational counselling.
7. PURPOSE OF COUNSELLING:
Find out and make individuals aware of
their basic personal prerequisites, abilities,
assests, liabilities and potentialities.
Provide usable information vocation and
to correct or clarify misinformation.
Help students develop proper attitude
towards themselves, others, school, values,
interests, morals, beliefs and discipline.
8. COUNSELLORS:
Counsellors are trained to listen
without judging and to help children sort
out their thoughts and feelings.
Counsellors are qualified to a
minimum of post graduate, Diploma in
counselling.
9. Counsellors in primary school often use
creative activities such as drawings, art,sand
trays and writing to help a child express
their concerns.
Counsellor will regularly review the
usefulness of counselling with a child and if
the child no longer feels the need for
counselling the sessions will come to an
end.
