responsible for the promotion of
responsible , sustainable and
universally accessible tourism.
It promote tourism as a driver of
economic growth, development
and environment sustainability.
4. UNWTO : ESTABLISHMENT HISTORY
WTO was started as the International Congress of
official Tourist Traffic Associations set up in 1925 in the
Haghe.
In 1934 International Union of Official Tourist
propaganda Organization (IUOTPO) was created.
IUPTPO was renamed as the International Union of
Official Travel Organizations (IUOTO) after world war
II in Geneva.
In 06 December 1969 it get permitted to establish WTO.
5. UNWTO : ESTABLISHMENT HISTORY
Again, In 1970 on 27th sept. IUOTO’s Extraordinary
General Assembly adopted the statutes of World Tourism
Organization in Mexico.
Thus, IUOTO became the World Tourism Organization
(WTO) and first General Assembly was held Madrid in
May 1975.

8. UNWTO MEMBERS
■ UNWTO membership include 157 Countries,
6 Associate Members and Over 480 Affiliated
Members representing the private sector,
education institute, tourism associations and
local tourism authorities.
■ Nepal became its members in 1975 AD
9. STRUCTURE
■ General Assembly
It is the principal gathering the world tourism organization.
It meets every two years to approve the budget &
programme of work. Every four year it elect Secretory
General.
■ Regional commission
UNWTO has six regional commission – Africa, the
Americans, east Asia & the Pacific , Europe, the Middle East
and South Asia.
■ Executive council
It is UNWTO governing board, responsible for ensuring that
he organization carries out its work and adheres its budget.
It meets at least twice a year

■ Secretariat
The secretariat is led by Secretory General Taleb Rifai of
Jordan who supervises about 110 full time staff at
UNWTO Madrid Headquarters. These official are
responsible for implementation UNWTO programme of
work.
The official language UNWTO are Arabic, English,
French and Russian
