Definition • Socialization is the process of learning to become successful members of our society • teaching of values, norms and roles • begins in childhood with family and continues as we mature • in adolescence: school, media and religion often also play a growing role as secondary agents of socialization • The role of the family starts to lessen • However, what we learn in our family of origin often has a lasting influence throughout our lives – both positive and negative

  4. Criteria for “influential” • What does influential mean to you in this context?
  5. Agents of Socialization •Check the image to determine which agent of socialization you have been assigned •Complete the following statement, “_______ is the most influential agent of socialization because…” on a piece of paper independently
  6. Agents of Socialization •Share your independent response with your group members •The group is responsible for making an argument in point form about why their agent is the most influential •Record group ideas on chart paper • Select spokesperson/people to present group ideas
  7. Homework •Read pages 40-41 and answer questions 1-3 (page 41)
