Growth in the MCU market is driven by the proliferation of embedded devices and an expanding range of vertical markets that are addressed by microcontrollers. New areas of development include capacitive touch sensing, lighting, building automation and smart metering, among others. The once general MCU no longer has the sophistication to address the requirements of the technology that is now coming to market. To meet this new need, a new tier of MCU has come to market that is defined as ultra-low-power.
