Here, The Illustrating OpenText Cloud Models
With so many cloud models, such as infrastructure-as-a-service,
platform-as-a-service, multi-tenant SaaS, and dedicated cloud hosting
services, it's easy to get overwhelmed and confused about what's right
for your business needs. In this Benetch’s Article, we provide an
overview of the available cloud services and deployment models
defined by NIST and define a cloud model for OpenText. Cloud
computing is a model of on-demand access to shared computing
resources that can be rapidly deployed and shared by administrators
or service providers with minimal effort or interaction.
Cloud service model
The three service models of the cloud are as follows:
• Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
The capability provided to the consumer is the provision of
processing, storage, networking, and other basic computing resources
on which the consumer can provision and run any software,
including operating systems and applications. The consumer does not
manage or control the underlying cloud infrastructure, but can
control the provided operating system, storage, and applications, and
may have limited control over selected networking components such
as host firewalls.
• Platform as a Service (PaaS)
Consumers can deploy in the cloud consumer-built or purchased
applications created using the provider's supported programming
languages, libraries, services, and tools. The consumer does not
manage or control the underlying cloud infrastructure, including
networking, servers, and operating systems or storage, but has control
over deployed applications and possibly configuration settings of the
application hosting environment.
• Software as a Service (SaaS)
The consumer uses the provider's application running on the cloud
infrastructure. Applications can be accessed from various client
devices through a thin client interface such as a web browser or a
program interface. Consumers do not manage or control the
underlying cloud infrastructure, including networking, servers,
operating systems, storage, or even individual application
functionality, except for limited user-specific application
configuration settings.
Deployment Model
NIST defines four deployment models:
• Private Cloud
Cloud infrastructure is intended for exclusive use by a single
organization spanning multiple consumers (for example, business
units). It may be owned, managed, and operated locally or externally
by the organization, a third party, or a combination thereof.
• Community cloud
Cloud infrastructure is intended for use by a specific community of
consumers from organizations that share common concerns such as
mission, security requirements, policy, and compliance
considerations. It may belong to, be managed, and operated by one or
more organizations in the community, third parties, or a combination
thereof, and may exist on-site or off-site.
• Public cloud
Cloud infrastructure is openly used by the public. It may be the
property, management, and operation of a company, academic or
governmental organization, or a combination thereof. It is located on
the cloud provider's premises.
• Hybrid cloud
A cloud infrastructure consists of two or more distinct cloud
infrastructures (private, public, or public) that remain distinct units
but are connected by standardized or proprietary technologies that
support data and application portability (e.g., with Cloud bursting for
load balancing between clouds).
Define an OpenText cloud Model
Based on the above definitions, OpenText Cloud is suitable for a
combination of PaaS and SaaS service models as well as private and
hybrid delivery models. Elements defined by Public Cloud and
Community Cloud apply to OpenText Cloud. However, they are not
available to the public, only to OpenText commercial customers.
Because of this distinction, we refer to OpenText's cloud offering as a
private/hybrid cloud, rather than a "public cloud" in this document,
although OpenText Cloud offers a shared cloud infrastructure
(virtualized and logically separated between customers).
