2. INTRODUCTION
 In India, women constitute 48% of the total population
and 72% of them are in rural areas.
 Even after 70 years of independence, most of our
women population are living in a state of negligence
and exploitation.
 Scientific achievement and modernization are yet to
make an impact on all of them.

3. INTRODUCTION
 If they are empowered in terms of knowledge,
information, the right environment and proper skills,
women can lead the nation to greater heights socially,
economically and culturally.
 The 21st century witnessed drastic changes in the
position of Indian women.
 A number of these changes have been for the better.

 Women empowerment means emancipation of women
from the vicious grips of social, economical, political,
caste and gender-based discrimination.
 A woman is a being with senses, imagination and
thoughts. She should be able to express them freely.
 Empowerment means to have the self-confidence to
articulate and assert the power to negotiate and decide.

 Swami Vivekananda quoted that “There is no chance
for the welfare of the world unless the condition of
women is improved, and it is not possible for a bird to
fly on only one wing.”
 Therefore the inclusion of “Women Empowerment’ as
one of the prime development goals.
 Empowering women to participate fully in economic
life across all sectors is essential.

 There is a tradition of worshipping many female
goddesses in India.
 The contribution of women is omnipresent in every
sphere of life as India seeks to march steadily towards
the path of growth.
 Women got empowered and moved to participate
further in all spheres of services – financial,
administrative, judicial and education.

 We all know that girls are now doing better at school
than boys. More women are getting degrees than men,
and are filling most new jobs in every field.
 With increasing literacy among women in India, their
entry into many types of work, formerly preserved for
men, women can now look upon the bearing and
raising of their children not as a life’s work itself but as
an episode.

 Makila Samakhya Programme creates a learning
environment where women can collectively pool their
potential, gain and strength to demand information and
knowledge and move forward to change and take charge of
their lives.
 Swa-Sakthi Project aims at enhancing women’s access to
resources for better quality of life through use of drudgery
and time reduction devices, health, literacy and confidence
enhancement measures.

 Bharatiya Mahila Bank - Launched by former Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh in November 2013, Bharatiya
Mahila Bank is an all women’s bank with an objective to
serve the banking needs of women and promote their
economic empowerment.
 Rashtriya Mahila Kosh (National credit fund for women)
It was set up in 1993 with a corpus of Rs. 31 crore to
provide micro-credit to poor women.

10. CONCLUSION
 Men and women are the two wheels of the vehicle called
‘progress’.
 For development we need to understand and eliminate the
main cause of the ill practices against women in our
society.
 In spite of such drawbacks and hurdles that still prevail,
Indian women are no longer hesitant about claiming a
share and visibility within the family, at work, in public
places.
