This document summarizes and compares two approaches to language teaching - the traditional approach developed in the 1930s to 1960s, and a newer communicative approach. The traditional approach focused on speech and structure as basic elements and emphasized vocabulary and grammar control. The communicative approach sees structure as secondary to speech and emphasizes developing language through functions. It also adopts a communicative view of language and cognitive view of learning.
