Strategies to Help Your Child Read

Strategy 1 Look at the picture Look at the picture before reading. Refer to the picture at difficulty. DO NOT COVER THE PICTURE!

Strategy 2 Does It Make Sense? Predict a word that makes sense. Does the picture match what you read? If not, try another word. The cat is orange.

Strategy 3 Get your mouth ready. Say the beginning sound and look at the picture. f –

Strategy 4 Does It Look Right? Look at the beginning sound. Does it match what your child said? Look through the entire word. fish

Strategy 5 Reread When your child is “stuck” on a word, reread to try to figure it out.

Strategy 6 Does It Sound Right? The words that your child reads must make sense in the English language. “ Him goes to the store.”
