In 2019, the Ministry of Far East and
Arctic Development was launched
in Russia, taking over from the for-
mer Ministry of Far East Develop-
ment. Vladimir Putin granted the
new Ministry the authority to im-
plement and develop regulations
and state policy for Arctic econom-
ic and social development.
A new atomic icebreaker called
“Leader” was trialled by the Krylov
Research Centre, imitating Arctic
conditions within a 1.5 kilome-
tre basin. This icebreaker has the
potential to be the most power-
ful ever and has been tasked with
breaking ice to a thickness of up to
four metres.
