2. INTRODUCTION
• Florence, known as the Lady with the Lamp. 1820–
1910, English nurse, famous for her work
during the Crimean War. She helped to raise the status and quality of
the nursing profession and
founded a training school for nurses in London (1860)21st Century
• NURSING is the glue that holds a patient’s health care journey
together. Across the entire patient experience, and wherever there is
someone in need of care, nurses work tirelessly to identify and
protect the needs of the individual.
• Beyond the time-honored reputation for compassion and dedication
lies a highly specialized profession, which is constantly evolving to
address the needs of society. From ensuring the most accurate
diagnoses to the ongoing education of the public about critical
health issues; nurses are indispensable in safeguarding public health.

3. Biography:
• Florence Nightingale was born in Florence, Italy, on May
12, 1820. During the Crimean War, she and a team of nurses
improved the unsanitary conditions at a British base
hospital, reducing the death count by two-thirds. Her
writings sparked worldwide health care reform. In 1860 she
established St. Thomas' Hospital and the Nightingale
Training School for Nurses. She died August 13, 1910, in
London.
Florence Nightingale spent her night rounds giving personal
care to the wounded, establishing her image as the 'Lady
with the Lamp.'

• NURSING can be described as both an art and
a science; a heart and a mind. At its heart, lies
a fundamental respect for human dignity and
an intuition for a patient’s needs. This is
supported by the mind, in the form of rigorous
core learning. Due to the vast range of
specialisms and complex skills in the nursing
profession, each nurse will have specific
strengths, passions, and expertise.

application of poultices. It ought to signify the
proper use of fresh air, light, warmth,

6. DEFINITIONS
1.Nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of
individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick
or well and in all settings. It includes the promotion of health,
the prevention of illness, and the care of ill, disabled and dying

7. WHAT IS THE NURSING PROCESS?
• NURSING PROCESS; a scientific method designed to deliver the
very best in patient care, through five simple steps.
• Assessment – Nurses assess patients on an in-depth physiological,
economic, social and lifestyle basis.
• Diagnosis – Through careful consideration of both physical
symptoms and patient behavior, the nurse forms a diagnosis.
• Outcomes / Planning – The nurse uses their expertise to set
realistic goals for the patient’s recovery. These objectives are then
closely monitored.
• Implementation – By accurately implementing the care plan,
nurses guarantee consistency of care for the patient whilst
meticulously documenting their progress.
• Evaluation – By closely analyzing the effectiveness of the care plan
and studying patient response, the nurse hones the plan to achieve
the very best patient outcomes.

8. JOB DESCRIPTION
• General care of the patients
• Admission and discharge of patient.
• Assistance and instructions to patient and their relations.
• Bathing patients including daily care of mouth, nails and
pressure points.
• Four hourly or more frequent attentions to pressure points.
• Giving and removing of bed pans and urine pots.
• Giving and removing of hot water bottle.
• Bed making and carbolising.
• Feeding of patients as per order of dietician/physician of
concerned dept.
• Preparation of special feeds, eggs, milk etc.
• Ward rounds with Doctors/ND/NS/DNS.

Administration of medicine as per order of physician.
• Recording of medicines & injection given.
• Monitoring and charting vital signs
• Attend rounds with doctors from different units.
• Carryout procedures e.g. enema catheterization, dressings
irrigations, O2 therapy, preparing for and clearing up after
procedure.
• Preparation for and assistance in clinical tests and medical
procedure.
• Pre and postoperative care.
• Collecting, labeling and dispatching of specimens.
• Escorting patients to and from departments.
• Giving and receiving reports.
• Responsible for stocks/indent/articles in the ward

Ward Management
• Handing over and taking charge of shift.
• Keep the ward clean and tidy.
• Preparation of surgical supplies, bandage, splint.
• Routine care and cleaning of dressing trolleys, cupboards, apparatus,
mackintosh etc.
• Care of clean and soiled linens.
• Disinfections of linen, beds, floor and bed pans.
• Keeping an inventory of all items under their charge.
• Safe custody and maintenance of medical records of patients.
• Demonstration and guidance to student nurses and domestic staff.
• Assistance in orientation of new staff nurses.
• Participation in staff education and staff meeting.
• Assist in inspections such as MCI,INC, University etc

11. JOB DESCRIPTION AS PER AIIMS
• DIRECT PATIENT’S CARE:
• 1. Admission and discharge of the patients.
• 2. To maintain the personal hygiene of the patients, including bathing, care of mouth, back, nails, hair
etc.
• 3. Care of pressures points as needed.
• 4. To assist the patient in elimination, offering and removing the bed pans and Urinals.
• 5. Bed making.
• 6. Assist in feeding the weak and debilitated patients.
• 7. Writing of diet sheet, Supervision and distribution of diets.
• 8. Assist in physiotherapy, ambulation and rehabilitation.
• 9. Carry-out patient’s teaching and demonstration according to the need.
• 10. Counseling the patients, and relatives.
• 11. Care of the dying and dead.
• 12. Administration of Medicines and Injections to the patients.
• 13. Assist in administration of intravenous injections, infusion and Transfusion.
• 14. Observing, recording and reporting of vital signs e.g. T.P.R. and Blood pressure.
• 15. Carry out technical procedures, such as Naso-gastric intubation, Gastric Gavage and Lavage,
Oxygen Therapy, Dressing and Irrigation, Enema, Catheterization hot and cold applications, suction etc.
• 16. Collecting, labeling and dispatch of specimens.
• 17. Preparation for and assistance in clinical tests and medical/surgical procedures.
• 18. Urine testing for sugar, and albumin.
• 19. Observation, recording and reporting of all procedures and tests.
• 20. Escorting serious patients to and from the department/wards for investigations.

• 1. Handing over and taking over charge of patients, and ward inventory in each shift.
• 2. Maintenance of therapeutic environment in the ward.
• 3. Keeping the ward clean and tidy.
• 4. Routine care and cleaning of dressing trolleys, cupboards apparatus, mackintosh etc.
• 5. Care of clean and soiled linen.
• 6. Disinfection of linen, beds, floor and bed pans, and fumigation of rooms etc.
• 7. Preparation of room, trolleys, and sets for procedures.
• 8. Preparation of surgical supplies.
• 9. Maintaining interpersonal relationship with patients, relatives and health team
members.
• 10. Orientation of new staff/students.
• 11. Demonstration and guidance to student nurses.
• 12. Participation in staff education and staff meetings.
• 13. Participation in professional activities.
• 14. Demonstration and supervision of domestic staff.
• 15. Report about the medico-legal cases if any admitted in the ward. To keep the senior
nursing officials informed of the happenings / in the ward like fire, absconding patients, theft
etc.
• 16. Any other duty that may be assigned by sister grade-I from time to time.
