Gowanus dolphin was already sick: Biologist – New York
Daily News

The Gowanus Canal’s toxic waters didn’t kill the dolphin that perished in the Brooklyn
waterway on Friday, a necropsy revealed Monday.

The 7-foot, 340-pound male dolphin, whose plight drew television crews and scores of
onlookers to the canal’s shoreline, was dying from a host of ailments, and had sought the filthy
waters as a place to swim its last, marine biologist Kimberly Dunham said after a postmortem
exam that lasted more than four hours.

The aging injured dolphin, which was between 25 and 30 years ago, was found to be
suffering from long-standing medical problems, says marine biologist Kimberly Dunham
of the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation on Long Island.

Dunham, from the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation on Long Island,
said she found evidence the dolphin was suffering from long-standing medical conditions,
including stomach ulcers, kidney stones and parasites.

A unidentified man went to the water to pet an injured dolphin that was discovered in the
Gowanus Canal Friday near Nevins and Union Street in Brooklyn.

And the dolphin, old for its species at somewhere between 25 and 30, hadn’t eaten in days,
she added.

A man attempted to help an injured dolphin today but was scolded by an NYPD officer on
Sackett Street. The injured dolphin died in the Gowanus Canal after being trapped.

“There was no evidence that contamination from the canal killed the dolphin,” she said.

“This was a compromised animal,” Dunham added. “It was in trouble. This could have
happened out in the middle of the ocean. Unfortunately, it played out for all the world to see.”
