Interlocking Systems of
Oppression
SEXISM is the overarching system of advantages
bestowed on males. It is prejudice and
discrimination based on sex, especially against
females, founded on a patriarchal structure of male
dominance through social and cultural systems.

HETEROSEXISM is the overarching system of
advantages bestowed on heterosexuals. Heterosexism
is the institutionalization of a heterosexual norm or
standard, which establishes and perpetuates the notion
that all people are or should be heterosexual thereby
privileging heterosexuals and heterosexuality, and
excluding the needs, concerns, cultures, and life
experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual, trans*,
and intersex people. Many times blatant and at times
subtle, heterosexism is oppression by neglect, omission,
erasure, & distortion, as well as by purpose, intent, and
design.

HOMOPHOBIA is derived from the Greek terms
homos, meaning “same,” and phobikos, meaning
“having a fear and hatred” of those who love and
sexually desire those of the same sex. It includes
prejudice, discrimination, harassment, and acts of
violence brought on by that fear and hatred. It is
oppression by intent, purpose, and design.
Throughout this presentation, the term “heterosexism”
will be used rather than “homophobia” since
“heterosexism” seems to have gained a wider and
broader usage for this form of oppression.

BIPHOBIA is oppression directed against people
who love and sexually desire some people of all
sexes or those who are pansexual or polysexual.
ASEXUAL OPPRESSION is prejudice and
discrimination directed against asexual people.

 Cisgender: a term for individuals who match the sex
assigned to them at birth with their bodies, and their
personal gender identities. Other terms include “gender
normative,” “cismale,” “cisfemale,” & others.
The Latin prefix cis means “on the same side (as)”
or “on the side (of)” or “to/this the near side.”
 Cissexism (“Binarism,” “Transgender
Oppression,” “Genderism”): a conceptual structure
of oppression directed against those who live and
function external to the gender/sex binary, and/or the
principle that they do not exist at all.

 INTERSEX OPPRESSION is prejudice and
discrimination directed against intersex people
who comprise a significant proportion of the
population.

 ANTI-JEWISH OPPRESSION (ANTI-
SEMITISM): the systematic discrimination
against, denigration, or oppression of Jews,
Judaism, and the cultural, intellectual, and
religious heritage of the Jewish people.

 I consider anti-Jewish oppression as a form of
racism.

 Throughout discussion, I am not asserting (or even
attempting to imply) that Jews & LGBT people
encounter oppression identically.
 The experiences of these groups (and of
individuals within these groups) are often quite
different.
 Primary Goal: unearth some intersections in
representations of Jews and LGBT people, and
between heterosexism and anti-Jewish
oppression,
 At these points of intersection, greatest potential
for development of understanding and alliances.

 Throughout the ages, people cited biblical
passages to justify persecution, denial of
rights for Jews and LGBT people.

Reformation results in a

on one issue—the Jews.

a book called, On the

“First, their synagogues
should be set on fire.” Jewish
prayer books should be
destroyed and rabbis
forbidden to preach.The
homes of Jews should likewise
be “smashed and destroyed”
and their residents “put under
one roof or in a stable like
gypsies, to teach them they
are not master in our land.”

These “poisonous envenomed
worms should be drafted into
forced labor.The young and
strong Jews and Jewesses
should be given the flail, the
ax, the hoe, the spade, the
distaff, and the spindle and let
them earn their bread by the
sweat of their noses.” As a last
resort, they should simply be
kicked out “for all time.”

 Genesis 19:1-25: Sodom and Gomorra:
 From the Jewish Bible (also known as the “Old
Testament”) the story of the destruction of Sodom
is frequently cited to justify condemnations of
homosexuality. However, there are a number of
problems in interpreting this story as an argument
for a divine proscription of homosexuality. Many
early Jews and Christians, and some current Biblical
scholars, interpret the sin of Sodom to be that of
inhospitality toward strangers, and unrelated to sex.

 Leviticus 18:22:
 “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind:
it is an abomination.”
 Some Biblical scholars argue that these
condemnations of homosexuality were in fact
referring to same-sex temple rituals, a practice that
was apparently common among the Greeks,
Canaanites, and other neighboring groups, and was
not a condemnation of homosexuality, per se—a
concept that was largely unknown in ancient times as
we know it today.

 In the Christian scriptures (sometimes called
the “NewTestament”), four passages in
particular have been interpreted as
condemnations of homosexuality.

 Paul is said to have
denounced women who
were involved in same-
sex relationships.

given them up to shameful

have exchanged natural
intercourse for unnatural.”

 Aquinas believed that same-sex
sexuality (and any sexual act not
intended for procreation,
including masturbation) were
vices against nature, which
violated the will of God.

“Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By
the virtues of self-mastery that teach them
inner freedom, at times by the support of
disinterested friendship, by prayer and
sacramental grace, they can and should
gradually and resolutely approach Christian
perfection.”

“Basing itself upon Sacred Scripture, which
presents homosexual acts as acts of grave
depravity, tradition has always declared that
homosexual acts are gravely disordered.They
are contrary to natural law.They close the
sexual act to the gift of love [i.e., children].
They do not proceed from a genuine affective
and sexual complementarity. Under no
circumstances can they be approved.”

 Pope Benedict argued that saving
humanity from homosexual or
transgender “behavior” was just as
important as saving the rainforest from
destruction.
 He said that humanity needed to "listen
to the language of creation" to
understand the intended roles of man
and woman. He compared behavior
beyond traditional heterosexual
relations as "a destruction of God's
work."

2. Immature Developmental Stage

 Jews and LGBTs have also been represented
as an immature developmental stage.
 Many past and present-day religious leaders
consider Judaism as merely an intermediate
or immature religious stage on the way to
Christianity — the advanced, mature faith,
and view the Jewish Bible as only a prelude to
the eventual coming of Jesus.

 Christian depictions of the obstinacy of the
Jews by refusing to take the Christian
Gospels, the ultimate and “advanced”
religious teachings, as their own.

 Throughout history, Christians
have been anxious to convert
Jews and other “non-
believers”—an indication that
they not only consider
Judaism to be an incomplete
religious consciousness,
 Some see this as a form of
cultural imperialism.

 How to Respond to Judaism,
 Modern booklet, characterizes the Jewish faith as
“inadequate because it does not haveJesus, the
Messiah, as the object of faith.”

 WHEREAS, Jesus commanded that "repentance and remission of
sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning
at Jerusalem" (Lk. 24:47); and
 WHEREAS, Our evangelistic efforts have largely neglected the
Jewish people, both at home and abroad; and…

from a group called “MessiahToday” out ofWaverly
Hall, Georgia, insisting that I must “see the truth,” in
their terms.

lacking, but out of a choice not to believe the valid
evidence. It is not so much that you cannot believe, but
that you will not believe.Whether you will admit it or
not, Jesus is the Messiah on whom your eternal destiny
rests.”

 Another Christian
conversion program: so-
called “Jews for Jesus” – an
oxymoron – (also known
as “Messianic Jews,” or
“Completed Jews”).
 Purpose: to convince Jews
that their Messiah has
come as Jesus Christ.
 Evangelical Christians.

 CNBC show “The Big
Idea,” 2007,
 Columnist and author
said everyone on
earth should be
Christian and that
Jews needed to be
"perfected….It is
better if we were all
Christians.”

 “JAP” (or “Jewish American Princess”) jokes
appears on college campuses.
 Though some college students see this as
innocuous, it represents young Jewish women as:
 immature, spoiled, greedy, selfish, sexually frigid, and
dependent, usually on their doting fathers.
 These so-called jokes are thinly disguised general
modern stereotypical representations of Jews
and the Jewish religion as:
 rich, self-absorbed, clannish, bloodsucking, and
immature and/or lacking in religious consciousness.

 In 1859, posited an
evolutionary theory of plant
and animal development.
 The physical, mental, and
moral characteristics of the
human species had evolved
gradually over large expanses
of time.

 Within Darwinian theory is the concept of
continuity and advancement, from animal to
human, from savage to civilized.
 Though Darwin did not assert this,
 Some of Darwin’s successors extended his
ideas to theorize:
 Judaism and homosexuality are throwbacks
to earlier stages of religious and human
development.

 1904 German magazine,
 Depicts how underdeveloped immature Hanukkah

 Evolved into the highly developed mature
Christmas tree, symbolizingChristianity
 (Even though Christians borrowed the symbol of
the tree from Paganism).

 Many Protestant denominations continue to
view Judaism as an inadequate and
misguided religion.
 And for Catholics, not until 1965, at the
SecondVatican Council were Jews
exonerated for the death of Jesus.
 Likewise, for some religious denominations,
homosexuality is still considered a sin and
LGBT people as sinners.

 Two such theorists were American
physicians, G. Frank Lydston and
James Kiernan posited homosexuals
and bisexuals as a kind of remnant of
the primitive organisms from which
humans developed.

Sigmund Freud, advanced a four-stage model of
psychosexual development:
1. Newborn infants “polymorphously perverse,” deriving
pleasure from tactile sensations anywhere on their bodies
2. Then developing a sexual drive in the mouth, (Oral Stage)
3. Then the anus, (Anal Stage)
4. Ultimately, the genitals (Genital Stage)

 Freud asserted that
homosexuality a
developmental disorder,
 A fixation at one of the
intermediate “pregenital”
stages,
 He believed caused, at least
in part, by an incomplete
resolution in males of the
Oedipal complex.
 In this way, Freud saw gay
men as perpetual children.
What does he know? He
smoked!

 Although records back to antiquity documented
universal existence of same-sex sexuality,
 Not until 19th century C.E. that scientific community
 Created categories of sexual orientation,
 Leading to “medicalization” of homosexuality and
construction as immutable biological type.
 Gay males seen as feminized males
 Lesbians as masculinized females

 The image of the rather silly, childish gay man
has adorned movies and other popular media
into the twentieth century, as in this scene from
the 1932 U.S. film.

 As Christians have attempted to convert Jews,
many sectors, from religious ministries, to the
medical and psychiatric establishments have
attempted to convert LGBTs.

homosexual or bisexual
to heterosexual, or
transgender to

 “Race” socially constructed.
 The concept of “race” arose concurrently with
advent of European exploration as justification for
conquest and domination of the globe beginning in
15th century C.E.
 “Race” is historical, “scientific,” & biological myth.
It is an idea.
 Geneticists tell us there is often more variability
within a given so-called “race” than between
“races.”
 No essential genetic markers linked specifically to
“race.”

 Though biologists and social scientists proven that
“race” socially constructed (produced, manufactured),
 People face very real consequences in societies that
maintain racist policies and practices on:
