1. The Patrol at Parbar
1Chr 26:18-19
1Chr 26:18-19
At Parbar westward,
four at the causeway,
and two at Parbar.
Four and Two of What or Whom?
19 These are the divisions of the porters among
the sons of Kore, and among the sons of Merari.
These Porters were qualified guards (v8 able men
for strength for the service).
What we find in this chapter General military
orders.
The Temple is spoken of as if it were existing,
however it was not yet built.
2. Samuel and then David fixed the stations and
numbers of porters, and it was left for Solomon to
carry out the instructions. (1Chr 9:22; 23:1-6).
1Chr 9:22 All these which were chosen to be porters
in the gates were two hundred and twelve. These
were reckoned by their genealogy in their villages,
whom David and Samuel the seer did ordain in their
set office.
1Chr 23:1-6 1 So when David was old and full of
days, he made Solomon his son king over Israel. 2
And he gathered together all the princes of Israel,
with the priests and the Levites. 3 Now the Levites
were numbered from the age of thirty years and
upward: and their number by their polls, man by
man, was thirty and eight thousand. 4 Of which,
twenty and four thousand were to set forward the
work of the house of the LORD; and six thousand
were officers and judges: 5 Moreover four thousand
were porters; and four thousand praised the LORD
with the instruments which I made, said David, to
praise therewith. 6 And David divided them into
courses among the sons of Levi, namely, Gershon,
Kohath, and Merari.
I. The Porter
What is a Porter?
3. 1Chr 9:18 Who hitherto waited in the king's gate
eastward: they were porters in the companies of the
children of Levi.
Levitical gate guards.
1Chr 9:26 For these Levites, the four chief porters,
were in their set office, and were over the chambers
and treasuries of the house of God.
Guards for the gates, chambers (buildings) and the
treasuries.
1Chr 23:6 And David divided them into courses
among the sons of Levi, namely, Gershon, Kohath,
and Merari. (1Chr 26:19)
Three divisions of soldier (stewards) to stand guard.
2Chr 8:14 And he appointed, according to the
order of David his father, the courses of the
priests to their service, and the Levites to their
charges, to praise and minister before the priests, as
the duty of every day required: the porters also by
their courses at every gate: for so had David the
man of God commanded.
2Chr 35:14-15 14 And afterward they made ready
for themselves, and for the priests: because the
priests the sons of Aaron were busied in offering of
4. burnt offerings and the fat until night; therefore the
Levites prepared for themselves, and for the priests
the sons of Aaron. 15 And the singers the sons of
Asaph were in their place, according to the
commandment of David, and Asaph, and Heman, and
Jeduthun the king's seer; and the porters waited
at every gate; they might not depart from their
service; for their brethren the Levites prepared
for them.
The Porters stays on guard and the Priests serve them.
Mark 13:34-35 34 For the Son of man is as a man
taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave
authority to his servants, and to every man his work,
and commanded the porter to watch. 35 Watch ye
therefore: for ye know not when the master of the
house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the
cockcrowing, or in the morning:
You no longer own your body (house) but are a porter, be
sure the Master will be pleased with what he finds in his
house when he comes back.
Rev 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if
any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will
come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with
me.
5. Porter should have a close relationship with the owner of
the property.
1Cor 3:16-17
16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God,
and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall
God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which
temple ye are.
1Cor 6:19
19 What? know ye not that your body is the
temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which
ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
2Cor 6:16-17
16 And what agreement hath the temple of God
with idols? for ye are the temple of the living
God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them,
and walk in them; and I will be their God,
and they shall be my people.
17 Wherefore come out from among them, and
be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the
unclean thing; and I will receive you,
The orders given to the Unit of Merari are simple, concise
and authoritative.
6. II. The Percentage
1Chr 26:18
18 At Parbar westward, four at the causeway, and two
at Parbar.
No mention of any place that is not guarded. Some places
need more vigilance than others.
The farther from the Temple you are the more you should
be on guard. Even in the court half of you attention is to
be on guard. (“watch ye”)
The Causeway
The road or highway leading into the Temple grounds via
the western outer wall. (from the profane place to the
pure place)
Ezek 42:20
20 He measured it by the four sides: it had a wall
round about, five hundred reeds long, and five
hundred broad, to make a separation between the
sanctuary and the profane place.
Lam 1:10
7. 10 The adversary hath spread out his hand upon all her
pleasant things: for she hath seen that the heathen
entered into her sanctuary, whom thou didst command
that they should not enter into thy congregation.
2Tim 3:5-6
5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power
thereof: from such turn away.
6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and
lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with
divers lusts,
III. The Prestige
1Chr 26:19
19 These are the divisions of the porters among the sons
of Kore [Kohath bro. of Merari, Izhar the father of
Korah], and among the sons of Merari.
Moses from murder to the example of Messiah to come.
David from adulterer to “king for eternity” (Jer 30:9).
Paul from Persecutor of the Church to Apostle to the
Gentiles.
If you will stand guard as a proper Porter your past
history can be “redeemed”. Kore is now a name
8. connected to the protection of the Temple instead of the
trouble maker of Israel.
Jude 1:11
11 Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain,
and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and
perished in the gainsaying of Core.
