3. Objectives
1. Integration of the iPhone and iPad in university and
clinical settings;
2. Importance of mobile devices as tools for
communication, collaboration and social networking.

8. Mobile Health – cell phone
• Caregivers are more likely than other cell phone owners to
use their phones to look for health information (Fox and
Duggan, 2012);
• According to predictions, more people will access the Web
through mobile devices than through traditional desktops in
mid-2014 (Dillon, 2012).
Mobile wireless devices, including smartphones and tablets, have brought about radical changes in our lives, providing hyper-connectivity to social networks and cloud computing. But the digital world has hardly pierced the medical and educational settings.
Radical innovation and transformation of how we teach and practice medicine, rehabilitation & healthcare are within reach, but only if we as consumers (educators, practitioners..), confront the technology challenges ahead and actively contribute to the future of higher education.
This presentation has three main objectives :
•Firstly, I will describe how the iPhone and iPad are being integrated and deployed in American and Canadian universities and hospitals.
•Secondly, I will address the importance of mobility: use of mobile devices as tools for communication, collaboration and social networking ...with examples of iTunes apps ;
•Finally, I will share with you my « Top 10 » mobile apps and Web 2.0 tools for medical and health science education and practice.
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in new mobile technologies and how they can be used to enhance higher education and the practice of medicine and health sciences.
A growing number of educators and practicing health professionals have taken the “out-of-the-box” initiative and have examined how mobile handheld communication devices can provide added value in both a teaching and clinical context....
Although I will often refer to specific Apple products, my examples also apply to other manufacturers of cell phones, tablets and other mobile devices...(Blackberry, Samsung.)..
It was not so long ago…..
1970s
On April 3, 1973, Martin Cooper debuted the first cell phone featuring a fashionable brick-like design. The model looked as stylish as a shoebox and weighed a hefty 30 ounces. The bells and whistles on this design were the sounds you heard when pressing buttons, as the phone's primary purpose was to make phone calls.

Mobility allows us to…..
In education and in practice…
Technology has changed the way we teach. Our teaching & learning environments go beyond the confines of the traditional classroom in time & space….we have had to learn how to better use time in the classroom vs time spent online.
Today’s students are skilled practitioners of mobile devices and social networking; students use technology in ways that allow them to do what they want, anytime, any place and across all geographical boundaries….today’s students are indeed digital natives.
Technology has also transformed the space and environment of our university libraries….online books & scholarly journals, data bases are easily accessible….24-7…students learn how to become computer literate and to develop their critical and creative thinking skills…..they know how to search the scientific data bases….download books, articles and apps on their laptops and mobile devices.
Gone are the days…..
Doctors, health professionals and faculty members are just becoming familiar and engaged in using mobile devices to share, engage and connect in meaningful ways with their patients, staff and students.
In the next few slides there are links to video clips that describe how some American and Canadian hospitals and institutions have integrated and deployed mobile devices on a large scale. I will only direct u to these links…but not play the clips today cause of time restriction.
