“ Sustained sensitivity to the language…” ,[object Object],Tom Leonard’s poem ‘Unrelated Incidents’ employs a heavy dose of irony in order to pose to the reader an important question. Leonard believes that prejudice exists towards those with Glaswegian dialects. In transforming the standard BBC received pronunciation into Glaswegian, Leonard probes at the reader’s own prejudices: “ yi widny wahnt mi ti talk about thi trooth wia voice lik wanna yoo scruff”. Firstly, Leonard addresses the reader of the poem directly in order to challenge their own assumptions. Secondly, he uses a derogatory colloquial term “scruff” to emphasise how those who do not talk with a BBC accent are perceived as less reliable or even less intelligent. This is all done with great irony, as of course, the BBC persona that Leonard has adopted is “talking” in a Glaswegian dialect.
