SoFlo: On and Off the Wall
On view now in the Eissey Campus Gallery
After viewing the very engaging show now on view at our campus gallery, I noticed an abundance of art that depicted female figures
or referred indirectly to concepts of “womanhood”. Several works that we have discussed in class have also proposed visions or
“propositions” of the feminine. Each time an image is created it offers a certain reality or truth that reveals properties of the thing
represented. In this way the idea of the “feminine” is not only a biological reality, but a cultural creation that is fluid and dynamic.
Although there are many qualities of “woman” that have remained constant in the last 500 years, many have shifted as the cultural
context surrounding them has changed as well.Find two works in the gallery that deal with the “feminine” in some way and then for
each find a work in our book that can be compared to with it.
For each comparison list the artists name and the titles of the works. It is preferable as well if you attach an image of each. You may
photograph the pieces on view and you can find the works we have studied online.Please leaf through any material available or
otherwise research the artists to gather as much contextual background information as possible.
For each comparison you must write the following:
First indicate what pictorial conventions, ideas, or themes relating to the “feminine” that have remained unchanged, and is possibly
shared by the two works. As always BE AS SPECIFIC AS POSSIBLE. You must list 2 possible similarities and write a minimum of
2 sentences minimum for each one.
Second, indicate what has changed, and how the two works diverge in their representation of the feminine. Describe the historical
and cultural context that they has given rise to each work and how prevailing attitudes or ideas have shaped the content of the
images.
As always BE AS SPECIFIC AS POSSIBLE. You must list 2 differences and write 2 sentences minimum for each one.

Compare/Contrast de Beaufort Individual Project #1 SoFlo: On and Off the Wall On view now in the Eissey Campus Gallery After viewing the very engaging show now on view at our campus gallery, I noticed an abundance of art that depicted female figures or referred indirectly to concepts of “womanhood”. Several works that we have discussed in class have also proposed visions or “propositions” of the feminine. Each time an image is created it offers a certain reality or truth that reveals properties of the thing represented. In this way the idea of the “feminine” is not only a biological reality, but a cultural creation that is fluid and dynamic. Although there are many qualities of “woman” that have remained constant in the last 500 years, many have shifted as the cultural context surrounding them has changed as well.Find two works in the gallery that deal with the “feminine” in some way and then for each find a work in our book that can be compared to with it. For each comparison list the artists name and the titles of the works. It is preferable as well if you attach an image of each. You may photograph the pieces on view and you can find the works we have studied online.Please leaf through any material available or otherwise research the artists to gather as much contextual background information as possible. For each comparison you must write the following: First indicate what pictorial conventions, ideas, or themes relating to the “feminine” that have remained unchanged, and is possibly shared by the two works. As always BE AS SPECIFIC AS POSSIBLE. You must list 2 possible similarities and write a minimum of 2 sentences minimum for each one. Second, indicate what has changed, and how the two works diverge in their representation of the feminine. Describe the historical and cultural context that they has given rise to each work and how prevailing attitudes or ideas have shaped the content of the images. As always BE AS SPECIFIC AS POSSIBLE. You must list 2 differences and write 2 sentences minimum for each one. Please do all of this in bullet points of complete sentences: Comparison 1 Artist, title, date, medium of each work.
