GRADING SYSTEM
Standard-based Report Cards
• On standard – 3
• Approaching standard – 2
• Below standard – 1
What is it?
• Is a way of teaching that
  emphasizes social, emotional and
academic growth in a strong and
  safe school community.
Principles that guide this approach
• The social curriculum is as important as the
  academic curriculum.
• How children learn is as important as what
they learn: Process and content go hand in
    hand.
• The greatest cognitive growth occurs
    through social interaction.
Principles that guide this approach
• To be successful academically and
socially, children need a set of social skills:
    cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empat
    hy, and self-control.
• Knowing the children we teach—
    individually, culturally, and
    developmentally—is as important as
    knowing the content we teach.
Principles that guide this approach
• Knowing the families of the children we
teach and working with them as partners is
    essential to children’s education.
• How the adults at school work together is as
    important as their individual competence:
Lasting change begins with the adult
    community.
Classroom practices
 • Morning Meeting
 • Rule Creation
 • Interactive Modeling
 • Positive teacher
   language
 • Logical consequences
 • Classroom organization
 • Working with families
 • Collaborative problem
   solving
Objectives
O To help children master
  mathematical concepts
  and skills.
O To help children
  construct mathematical
  knowledge and problem
  solving skills
What will your child learn?
O Numbers to 1,000
O Addition and subtraction up to
  1,000
O Multiplication Tables: 0, 1,
O 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10
O Metric Measurements:
  length, mass, and volume
What will your child learn?
OTime
OMoney
OGeometry:
  shapes, lines, and
  surfaces
Problem Solving

OPrimary goal
OCentral to
 mathematical
 learning
Through Problem Solving
Students are encouraged
OTo consider how they think,
OHow they communicate,
OHow they solve problems so
they can apply their skills to
 subsequent problems
Model Drawing and Problem
         Solving
O Help students
  visualize abstract
  math relationships
O Use rectangular
  blocks because
  they are easily
  divided
O Can be used
  before students
  know algebraic
  solutions

Students read appropriate self-selected
        books independently
Students need to read books that are JUST RIGHT
                    for them!
Teacher & students collaborate to
write text; teacher acts as a guide
Teacher & students compose text
   together sharing the pen.
Teacher works with a group of
students with similar strengths &
             needs
Students write independently
 Phonics Instructions
 Vocabulary Instruction
 Spelling Instruction
 Handwriting
 Our spelling program differs from a
 traditional spelling program where kids
receive a list of words on Monday and are
tested on those words on Friday.
Rather, our focus will be on word study.
We will study sound and word patterns.
Grades will be taken from writing
samples and cloze activities rather than
 a weekly test.
What parents can do at home!
 READ ALOUD to your child every single day!
 Have access to books at home.
 Make visit to a local library with your child.
 Encourage your child to read and write at home.
 Help your child choose “just right books”.
