What We Want to Explore
       with You

What is the role of the professional book review now
that social media outlets serve as book info
 resource channels?
How do book-related social media communications
address various needs of library staff who work
 with teen readers?
What We Plan to Discuss
(during that 45 minutes we're asking that you hold
               your own questions)

             technical changes in review publishing
              increasing access to review publishing
how to get on board reviewing
                    review, vs reader response
popular magazines’ coverage of teen interest books
blog coverage’s expansion of info on small presses, authors of
color, women authors and some genres
retooling professional collection managers' intellectual work
role of social media for publishers, reviewers and readers
Angela developed the
following survey, and both
she and Carla used it at
  their schools to discern
    how teens find book
     recommendations.
While Angela reported her
    results, with her 9-12
 graders, Carla reports hers
as follows, having converted
 the responses she received
    from her 6-8 graders.
How important is the
library market in getting a
 title out to teen readers?
How is a professional
 reviewer approaching
a book differently from
     an avocational
        blogger?
  Is blogging helping
 teens to find books of
     more interest?
  Bloggers as pointing
   up more diversity
among featured books
   and more diverse
  reading experiences
What makes a review a good one for professional purposes?
What are the ethical
ramifications around
   pay-for-review
  arrangements?
What are the downsides of the trend away from pithy
               professional reviews?
What are the limitations by which professional reviews are
bound? How do these affect the professional reviews’
                         efficacy?
How are collection developers and readers’ advisors
adjusting work to incorporate social media channels with
         formal, “professional” review reading?
How
 are e-
galleys
changi
ng the
review
game?
