3. The client, a leading manufacturer of industrial tools and household hardware and provider of security products and
locks, utilized Microsoft Windows Server 2003. Microsoft had announced the end of this product, leaving the client
with a decision of what to do for its large number of Windows 2003 servers that ran its complex Enterprise Resource
Planning (ERP) and financial and production applications.
Hundreds of thousands of Windows 2003 servers were throughout the organization at 123 sites located in 40 countries
across five continents. This included three major datacenters, which ran more than 250 unique business critical
applications used by all business lines in the customer’s organization.
With no previous experience in this area and a lack of resources and in-house bandwidth available to handle a project
of this size, the client was running an unsupported operating system in its network, which posed a significant security
threat and compromised the stability of its applications critical to business.
The client sought to upgrade all of the obsolete servers to the Windows 2008 operating system. In addition to the
upgrade the client wanted to:
Standardize and streamline operations support for the servers that were upgraded to improve service
delivery and operational efficiency
Virtualization and consolidation of its datacenter with an application and database consolidation
Stay up-to-date with technologies and its competitors
4. The organization sought a vendor with extensive knowledge of large scale data center modernization projects.
As a leading provider of IT Infrastructure Management Services (IMS), YASH Technologies was selected for the upgrade
of its Microsoft servers. YASH’s IMS services are engineered to improve your existing IT infrastructure and align
business objectives with IT strategies. With extensive industry expertise and best practices with global clients, YASH
would make the client’s business stronger while enhancing business processes.
After a detailed assessment of the client’s existing landscape, YASH suggested:
The implementation and upgrade would be executed within an 18 month time frame with six dedicated members of
YASH employed for the initiative. YASH would complete a minimum of 120 server upgrades per month until all servers
were on the latest platform.
Infrastructure Management System (IMS) service and support
Migration from Windows 2003 to Windows 2008, which included all applications that resided on
Windows 2003 platforms
5. Before the upgrade launched, YASH assembled all stakeholders, which included both internal users and customers of
the client, and held planning meetings to ensure roles and responsibilities were thoroughly understood
During the initiative, each of the client’s hundreds of thousands of servers, containing business critical applications,
were upgraded separately.
The upgrade of all Microsoft servers was completed within the established timeline. An average of 10,000 end users
benefitted per month across all departments throughout more than 40 countries.
Post go-live, YASH supported each server for several weeks to make sure the system was running efficiently. If issues
arose in the new server, the old system was utilized until the issues were resolved. Once the new server was operating
error-free, YASH decommissioned the old system.
YASH executed the complete project life cycle of the server and application migration by utilizing IMS, which included
the following process for each of the client’s servers:
Analyzed the server – Each application on the server needed to be analyzed to verify its compatibility on the
new Microsoft 2008 operating system
Tested applications on the new platform – Each application from the legacy server needed to be installed on
the new operating system and tested
Executed production cutover – Each application was moved over from Windows 2003 to the modern,
updated platform

6. Following the upgrade of all outdated Microsoft servers with IMS, the client realized minimized operational and support
costs with the consolidation of applications and database servers. Adding to the cost savings was the conversion of
most physical servers to virtual servers.
As part of the upgrade process, application servers were streamlined and standardized for enhanced operational
efficiency.
Based on quality of deliverables, the customer is exploring opportunities with YASH to execute a similar engagement
of upgrading Windows 2008 servers to Windows 2012.
