12. Welcome Letter Winter Quarter 2010 Dear Student, Welcome to Columbia Basin College and the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program. This presentation and the handouts from your teachers should answer many of the questions you have about our program and the various classes and pathways available to you. Columbia Basin College has classes for students at all levels of English and we are confident we can help you to reach your educational and work-related goals as a member of the local Tri Cities Community. 13. $$$$$ COST $$$$$$ ESL, GED and ABE classes have a $25.00 tuition charge. This covers your educational interview or orientation class and also your class tuition. Should you choose to take more than one class within these departments the $25.00 will cover multiple courses. $25.00 must be paid every quarter (3 months)
14. Refunds Please be aware that the $25.00 tuition fee is only refundable if an official withdrawal occurs. Within the first five days of the quarter 100% refund will be given. Tuition cannot be applied to a different quarter at C.B.C. Only current students (not new) are eligible to receive a refund.
15. Important Tuition is to be paid to the cashier at the CBAC building for ESL classes. Should you have any questions, please contact the English as a Second Language Department at 542-5605.
16. E.S.L. Levels There are 6 levels of E.S.L. Level 1 Beginning Literacy Level 2 High Beginning Level 3 Low Intermediate Level 4 High Intermediate Level 5 Advanced Level 6 High Advanced *When you have completed Level 6 you transition to LOC/ABE/GED preparation classes , I-BEST or College Level Classes.
17. How long will I stay in one level? You should stay in the same level until you and the instructor agree that you are ready to move. This often takes three quarters!
18. What can I do after I finish level 6? Begin a GED preparation class. Enroll in a job training program. I-BEST programs offer job training and college credits while improving your English. Work toward a college certificate or degree.

21. Beginning the class Each student will be given a placement test to find their English Literacy Level. You will be tested in reading, writing, listening and speaking! Each student will be placed at an appropriate level for them to learn.
22. Changing Levels You will be assigned a level based on how well you did on your test. If you find the class too easy or too difficult for you, please talk to your instructor. Most instructors will ask you to remain in the class for a few weeks to really determine if you are appropriately placed.

25. Computer Lab Many sites have computer labs. You may learn computer skills in your E.S.L. class. You may use the computers to do projects or activities assigned by your instructor. Programs may include: Type to Learn Rosetta Stone English learning websites Microsoft Word

27. Student Identification Card Must attend 12 hours of instruction to receive one. Will allow you to check out materials for free at the library on the campus of Columbia Basin College, use campus computer labs, attend sporting and cultural events on campus for free. 29. Grow….Grow….Grow….Grow….Grow….Grow… We also have classes… C.B.A.C. (next to Walgreen’s in Pasco) Chase Center (next to C.B.A.C.) Many other sites offer classes in Pasco, Connell, Basin City, Broetje Orchards, Finley, Kennewick, Prosser, etc. Locations change so please check the current list of offered classes.
30. Parking and Safety Be safe when walking to and from your car to class. Lock your cars. Lock purses and valuables (CD’s, cell phones, I-Pods) in the trunk. Stay in well lit areas. On Pasco’s C.B.C. campus park your car in the white lines only, facing forward, or you will get a ticket. Watch for no parking, reserved, or handicap signs.
34. School Closures Columbia Basin College rarely closes school due to inclement weather, however other sites may cancel classes. If there is snow and ice on the road, or there is another emergency, please listen to the following radio stations to check on classes. 37. Attendance Attendance is required during each scheduled class time. If you cannot attend class, or must come late or leave early, you must notify your instructor. You will be dropped from the class if you have more than 4 unexcused absences. Check with your instructor to see how they want to be notified. Whether it is via school phone, cell phone, email or etc.
38. Waiting Lists If you fail to inform your instructor and do not attend class for several classes, the instructor will remove your name from the class and fill your spot with a new student. If you cannot attend classes anymore, please call 542-5605.
39. What to expect at the end of each quarter. A TEST! You will need to take a test very similar to the test you took at the beginning of the quarter at the end of the quarter!
40. Children Unfortunately, because of liability reasons no children are allowed in our classes. We know that emergencies come up with childcare. If you need to stay home, please contact your instructor.
41. Dictionaries Most instructors do not require you to buy any textbooks, however it will benefit you greatly to buy a dictionary to use at home. Dictionaries can be purchased at the C.B.C. bookstore, Barnes and Noble, Target, online or at Hastings.
42. GOALS What is a goal? The result or achievement toward which effort is directed….Basically, it means to work hard for something that you want!
43. What do think the goal of these people was? To Buy A House!
44. Goal vs. Dream What is the difference between a goal and a dream? “The difference between a goal and a dream is the written word.” -Gene Donohue
45. Why do people not reach their goals? They do not write down their goal. They do not break their goals down to where they are attainable and celebrate small accomplishments.
46. Goal Setting Rules Rule #1 MOST IMPORTANT Write your goal down. Rule #2 Refer to your goal everyday (morning and night) Think…Did my decisions today make me get closer to my goal?
47. Goal Setting Continued… Rule #3 Make sure your goal is something that you really want! Rule #4 Write your goal in complete detail. Instead of saying your goal is to get a “new house,” write a “2000 sq. foot house, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms.”
48. Short Term vs. Long Term Goals Both short term and long term goals must be made. Short term goals are goals that can be reached in 1-2 weeks. FOR EXAMPLE: Learn 50 new words in English. Learn to say and write the parts of the body. Learn to write a complete paragraph with 5 sentences. Learn to say and write the days of the week or months of the year.
49. Long Term Goals A reminder that long term goals may take two quarters to two years. You may have to complete several short term goals to meet your long term goal. FOR EXAMPLE: Pass one level in English (from level 1 to 2) Pass my GED Pass two levels in English (from level 2 to 4) Learn to write a complete 5 paragraph essay

It is the same with learning to play tennis, golf, volleyball, learning to sew, learning a new job or anything worthwhile. It takes time!
How many of you are busy working? Going to school? Cleaning house? Cooking? Taking care of your children? How many of you are tired?Who does not have extra time to learn English?Here are some ways to practice that don’t take more time………..
When you go to work………speak to people in English. When you go to the store practice speaking with anyone in the store.How many of you have children? Read children’s books to your children. Then you will both benefit. You will both be learning. You can check out books at the local library.
When you are proficient in English you are more marketable for jobs. People who can speak English can make more money that those who do not.

This fee is very minimal compared to what college tuition is. It averages about $8.34 per month. You are getting a terrific opportunity.

Students must pay tuition before beginning placement testing for classes.
How many levels are there?Level one is for students who speak no English and as you progress through the levels you become more proficient in English.Usually a class is one level, however at off campus sites classes may contain two or more levels.
Of course, it depends on how committed you are! If you attend class each day, stay the whole class and practice daily when not in class, including your HOMEWORK, you will progress more quickly.
The I-BEST is a fairly new program that offers new programs each quarter. These are short-term certificates, which take from one quarter, up to one year to complete. Some of the programs include early childhood education, nurse’s assistant, etc. The cost is more than $25.00 and each program has different fees.
BICS- Basic Intercommunication Skills takes 6 months to 2 years to learn. This is communication in social situations with your friends. For example, Hi, how are you?Where do you work! Do you like to dance?CALPS-Cognitive academic language proficiency this is formal academic language like used in textbooks in school or at a doctor’s office. This takes 5-7 years to learn.
Learning a 2nd language takes time. Please have patience!
The testing procedure may take two days.
Please feel comfortable talking to your instructor about any questions or concerns you may have about placement.
These classes can be taken in addition to the English classes without paying any more money. The initial $25.00 covers one of these classes as well.Please contact your instructor for a schedule or contact the English as a second Language office at 542-5605.Please ask your instructor about the availability of these classes. *Classes are not available at all times.
Instructors will teach you how to the use the computer if you have never used one. They are very excited to teach you!
We offer many opportunities for classes including the morning, afternoon and evening. Therefore, there are no reasons that you cannot attend class. Please let your friends know that all of these times are available.
Your instructor will give you a yellow half sheet of paper that you can take to the Admissions office on the campus of Columbia Basin College and receive a photo I.D.. The camera hours are Monday and Tuesday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and on Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.You will receive a sticker each quarter from your instructor after you have your I.D. card that will show that your I.D. is valid. Card might also be used for student discounts in the community.
Columbia Basin College was founded in 1955. It is referred to as C.B.C.
Safety is very important at all sites. This is general important information for anywhere you may be.
Pass out the academic school calendar and review with students.
We usually start classes the third week of September. We take off Veteran’s day and Thanksgiving day in November. Class usually finishes the second week of December. We may offer winterim classes over the Christmas break for a two week period. Please check with your instructors to see if any classes are offered.
Classes will start the first week of January. On Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday there will no class. There will be no school on President’s Day in February. Class will finish the third week in March.
In May there will be no classes on Memorial Day. Classes usually finish the 3rd week of June.
Summer quarter is only 8 weeks. It will start the last week of June. On Independence Day there will be no class. There is a long vacation between summer and fall quarter. This is an excellent time for vacation so that you do not miss class.
Communication with your instructor if you cannot attend class is very important.
It is very important that each student take this test at the end of each quarter to show that they have made growth in their English abilities. Most importantly for our program, this is how we receive funding to keep the program going. If you know that you will not be able to finish the quarter or must leave a few weeks early let your instructor know so that you can take the test early.THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!
Some off campus sites may offer childcare. If you attend classes off site, please check with your instructor to see if they offer childcare.
Dictionaries will be available for use in the classroom. Students will not be allowed to take them home.
What are the steps that they needed to do to be able to buy a house? -Brainstorm: Save money from each check, talk to banks, find a location that they like, figure out what they can afford etc. Anything that you do requires planning and preparation. Many people make lists and cross things off when they accomplish things. Much like going to the grocery store so you don’t forget anything.
A dream is something that we just think about, but never write anything down or have a plan on how we are going to accomplish it. That is why most dreams never happen. Goal are written down with small steps on what to do to make it come true. For example, if your goal is to go to Mexico next year, then you might write down that you are going to save $50.00 each paycheck for one year to meet your goal.
You must write your goals down. Start with a short term goal ……….something that you can do in 3 months. When you meet that goal celebrate and continue towards working toward your long term goal. For example, many people say their goal is to learn English. Well…you know that may take many years and you will not feel like you are accomplishing anything. Have a short term goal like to learn 50 new words in English in three months. Keep a list and celebrate when you have learned the 50 new words.
Rule #1 Write down your goal and put it where you can see it.Rule #2 If your goal is to pay off your credit card… think about it first think in the morning and remind yourself not to use your credit card and again when you go to bed refer to your goal.
Rule #3Make sure that the goal is your goal and not your husband’s, wife’s, boyfriend’s, girlfriend’s etc. Make sure it is what you want, or you will not be as driven to accomplish the goal.
Use baby steps to work towards your larger goal.
When working towards long term goals it is very important that you celebrate the short term goals accomplished along the way. That way you will remain motivated to keep going and continue to work towards your goals!
Include all that helped you along the way! Make it a special celebration!
