I am doing my demographic analysis on Twitter which is one of my favorite social
networking tools. There is not a day that goes by when I don’t Tweet either by phone or from my
laptop. I know the whole Twitter phenomenon sounds silly to some, but Twitter is a fun way to
engage with others in your same field, who share the same interests, or who live in your
geographic area.
When I first learned of this assignment I wondered about the demographics of a site like
Twitter. My followers consists of a wide array of people ranging in age so my curiosity was
peaked as to what age range uses the site the most.
According to the 2011 Social Network Analysis Report, the number one region for
Twitter users is Brazil which was a surprise. Female users outpace the males and the majority
age group is 35-44 year olds (the mean age is 44). Most of the users are also college educated.
Twitter has done wonders for me as an aspiring PR professional. I have a network of PR
people from around the country that I may not personally know, but social network with on a
regular basis. A group entitled Women in PR has a Twitter account and they host luncheons,
workshops, and boot camps for those that want to continually learn more about the profession
and they also honor Women in PR who have made great strides in the profession.
PR professionals on Twitter also have a tendency to post links to sites or articles with
valuable information on new media as well as emerging techniques in the field. For newbies like

me this can prove to be very beneficial. I also follow several PR job sites that have Twitter
accounts so that keeps me abreast of what companies are hiring.
I hope I have covered in detail why Twitter is one of my favorite sites. I feel that social
media sometimes gets a bad rap from people who feel that it does more harm than good. Social
media does have its negatives, but if used properly it can be a great networking tool which could
very well lead to your next job or at least a viable job lead.
